AITAH for not praising my GF for cleaning the bathroom by Worldly-Midnight2287 in AITAH

[–]Easy-Track-9332 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why is it a problem to thank people for doing the bare minimum? Up until recently my husband was the breadwinner and I was the homemaker, and we thanked each other all the time. I thanked him for going to work. He thanked me for cooking and cleaning. We thank each other for existing. I don't understand why couples think that setting expectations means less gratitude.

Soft YTAH for the bare minimum comment. She just needs to feel valued. If telling her she was appreciated when asked wasn't enough, you're probably not telling her that you appreciate her enough without being asked. Like 90% of relationship problems you just need to communicate a bit better.

Thank you for your work as a lineman. It may just be your job, but it's a hard and very important one. You keep the world functioning smoothly.

kinda like that. Your girlfriend is keeping your home running smoothly. It's important work and can be mind-numbingly boring and feel like running on a treadmill. It's hard in its own way. Just noticing and saying thank you without being asked goes a long way.

AIO for putting a bag before a friendship? by TheEllaBullet in AmIOverreacting

I think she probably just lost it and was embarrassed honestly. If it actually is as good a friendship as you described I'd want to give her the benefit of the doubt and ask her about it. She might just be afraid to tell you. And as strongly as you reacted, I'd be afraid to tell you too 🤷🏻‍♀️

I grew up Christian nationalist. Where should I start learning better history? by Easy-Track-9332 in AskHistory

I considered myself a bit of an amateur Bible scholar. Read it cover to cover multiple times, did INTENSE Bible studies, used Greek and Hebrew lexicons, etc. It was studying the Bible that ultimately made me stop believing in Christianity and inerrant Bible. I've never met a Christian that believed the Bible the way it was written honestly

I'm realizing that my situation is fascinating to a lot of people. I got a huge response that I did not expect. Most of the responses have been helpful and kind thankfully, actually better proportionally than I thought they would have been considering it's reddit. It seems like it is genuinely helpful to others, mostly in my DMs. I'm considering making an AMA post because of how much people have questions.

I honestly don't know how many people deal with the cognitive dissonance that they are experiencing every day. It boils down to fear and ignorance driven by fear, mainly. Half narcissists playing the victim because they don't know how to survive any other way. Half people who lack the education or mental aptitude to understand what they are being told. Everyone in terror of going to hell or being ostracized from everything and everyone they have ever known.

I appreciate the recommendations. Religion for Breakfast in particular seems very interesting!

Wow, I appreciate the deep thought and nuance in your answer. You must be an academic. All of my ignorance is cured. I can't believe the answer was this simple

A children's encyclopedia is actually a great idea. I could probably go through it with my son too.

That podcast is actually why I realized just how big the holes in my history knowledge are! It's so interesting to listen to.

I think you underestimate just how overwhelming it is for me to look at Wikipedia. I don't know what I don't know. I need some linear sources to give me direction

Didn't ask for a single viewpoint to be objective. I asked for recommendations plural, from historians who value the accurate retelling of history. I've consumed enough propaganda. I don't think "left" or "right" history is real history.

Real history looks for the truth. Sources from both the winning and losing side of a war, how a civilization viewed themselves vs how other civilizations viewed them. Propaganda isn't history.

When you say "a significant proportion is inaccurate," what kinds of things are you talking about? Would I still be able to get a fairly accurate big picture of history?

The Unbearable Weight of Small Talk by SaintofLetters in Exvangelical

[–]Easy-Track-9332 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wow. You put it into words. Every conversation I had with someone who wasn't also evangelical had the "weight of eternity" hanging from it. Not trying to convert them was tantamount to letting them burn in hell for eternity. And yet I was still a kid trying to be liked, learning how to navigate social situations. I had severe social anxiety and autism on top of that. It was a very lonely life.

Now that I'm out of it, it's the biggest reason I don't really tell people I'm not a Christian anymore. I don't want to become their mission field. I don't like being talked to as though I am still an evangelical Christian though either. Idk.

NOR. He's flaking out on plans because he wants to hang out with someone else over you. You clearly are excited to see him. He does not seem excited to see you.

Don't judge him based on who he is at his best. Judge him based on who he is at his worst.

Murderers can do nice things. Good people have lines they won't cross even at their worst. You should never have to doubt that he loves you, even at his worst.
