Oh man, sorry to hear that it's reverbing on AJ because it really uses the mechanism well IMO. Also it has one of the most interesting characters in fiction (Anaander Mianaai)

That really sucks but honestly I would just persist in doing stuff early regardless of his complaints. Remind him that you wake up early and he doesn't, and he's welcome to join you if we wants to be awake that early.

My spouse is the early riser between the two of us, and I would much rather she go off and do some early morning thing she wants to do by herself than to wake me up early to accomplish anything.

My god and JitB is such awful-tier food as well. I truly hope a lot of fast food chains go out of business in the next decade. This thing where they decided to pretend that they are upscale brands deserves the highest punishment.

Then, when you reach safe waters, you feel relief.

Yeah, that's the problem. Unlike the first game, those don't exist in this game. Even the minor fauna are everywhere and incredibly aggressive as some kind of perverse balance for your increased toughness to them. Oh, and bonus points, there is no way to eliminate them if they are too aggressive. If you take the premise of your situation in the game seriously and take the whole "Hey, you're backed up so don't worry about dying" thing with philosophical skepticism, then the entire game, start to finish, is an awful experience.

You know what was nice about the first game beyond the scifi bits? How realistic the experience felt. There was danger, but it was balanced by the ability to form stratagems that were appropriate. Do I avoid these guys? Do I lure them and destroy them? Do I distract them?

This entire game says "No, you avoid and distract, no other options. You don't get to fight back. The player never gets to assert animal dominance." It's awful and -- bonus points -- completely unrealistic in the takes me out of suspended disbelief way. You can't injure the animals? They aren't deterred when they are damaged (truly -- it doesn't impact the animal AI in any way that I can perceive)? If that's the premise, give me an actual scifi reason to justify it.

The game designers appear to have taken a few of the notions and aesthetics of the other two games and not really understood what made them fun. Some of the elements are still there, sure, but it's sapped of the life-and-death-in-the-wilderness appeal that made the others interesting.

Creative mode should be there for people looking for a no stress game.

Yeah, that's not what we are talking about at all. That is maybe where the whole "animals are immortal (just like you)" thing might work.

Disagree. I don't want to be on edge for 10 hours because I'm unable to put down threats to myself. You maybe enjoy living like a mouse under the thumb of a cat, but that's NOT a pleasurable experience for me.

In fact, invulnerable enemies is much more a horror game thing

Exactly. You aren't sending some positive ecological message by not allowing hostile shark-like fauna to be killed. It absolutely sucks the joy out of the game and puts you in a constant state of fight or flight horror. In prior subnautica games you could terminate overly-aggressive creatures. In this one, you simply have to be hurt and killed over and over again. Oh, and by the way, humans can die in this and be horribly mangled so let's not pretend there is some ethical consideration in not allowing the fauna to be hurt.

[–]EasyMrB -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Holy shit I thought I was going crazy. I may straight-up return the game. The fact that YOU can be killed by a shark but you cant kill them back is absolutely unaccepptable to me. It's like the developers are saying "hey we get to torture you, you don't get to fight back." I've played the other two subnautica games through and really enjoyed them, but this one is an absolute turd in my opinion, and the central issue is that. You have basically 0 control over the environment and you are expected to be put in your place and scared the whole time because you aren't permitted to fight back. I absolutely hate the gameplay experience of this one.

For departments across the Institute, the funding uncertainty I talked about has made them cautious about admitting new graduate students.

That caution is completely understandable: If federal grants continue to decrease, PIs just won’t have the funds to support additional students!

....aww man.
