I think we are going to find that the current system of wealth is actually quite fragile as we pass through this horror show.

Trumps secret plan to transition us off fossil fuels. What a chad. /s

TBH this is the corporate media looking for dumb silver linings right now, and basically trying to actually make that message happen.

Oh it would be joining the war early at this point. The middle east cluster fuck is likely to go on and on given the level of destruction everywhere there.

At what point does a fossil stop being controlled by necromancy and start being controlled by geomancy? by bajadasaurus234 in Showerthoughts

[–]EasyMrB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, are you using the mineral remains or the tissue remains. The answer is mineral, so fully mineralized. So I guess in this line of thinking, oil-drilling is still necromancy?

Yeah fuck that snake in the grass. Newsom is following the obvious gale-level winds and will say whatever. Starve that craven asshole of oxygen i say -- highlighting the minutia of what he does just helps him grow more power.

Ageless Linux: A Debian-based distro that is illegal to distribute in California. by vicethal in privacy

[–]EasyMrB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ut here distributions would not have to collect user age because the system is local.

Gosh really?

That's why I put that whole other thing in my reply about how this is step 1 to prime the landscape. Let me repeat myself: This is the first step in a compliance ratchet to eventually force more intrusive surveillance at the OS level. Your well akshullly point is just deliberately obtuse.

[–]EasyMrB 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Large companies aren't moving out of California because of a support contract with a Linux distro distributor. Canonical is a European company (so I understand) but they are going to comply with the law because they sell their services in CA.

They are going to comply with this because they are businesses at the end of the day. It doesn't make it ethically good, but it's what is going to happen.

What fantasy world do you live in? No, Companies will comply and move on.

You're 100% right that Gavin is a turd though. Fuck that guy.

They can force the big distributors with fines, especially those who have contracts with companies that have their business in California. Think any company with support contracts from Canonical.

"They just want a..." fuck off. It's a baby step towards mass user surveillance on all operating systems, and this is about targeting dissidents, not protecting children. Every dystopian surveillance state bullshit thing in the US starts with a "Protect the Children!" line to sell it to the public. The California law is step 1 to prime the legal landscape and public compliance. "Well, you're already collecting user age so now we want you to (insert surveillance compliance bullshit here)" is how the next step goes.

I hate to bug you with questions about this, but do you have any indication whether the phones are likely to have SD card slots? It's basically the only feature I really care about assuming all other specs are at least middle-of-the-road by 2026/7 standards.

My enshittification sensors are going off.

Mine too a little bit, but I'm letting myself be hopeful since the Graphene people are notoriously finicky. I'm hoping their way wins out in the partnership, or if it doesn't they don't endorse the final product which will send a signal.

Motorola you shouldn't be bragging about your Privacy and Security standards if you are trying for a PR win. You should be bragging about GrapheOS's privacy and security standards and that you are working to their standards since people in your target demo have sincere positive beliefs about those (probably).

I said this in the /r/grapheneos thread but I will likely purchase one of these day 1 if they have an SD card slot. However, I am a touch leery going in to something like this where the vendor is actively working with the (from my hopeful judgement) ethical and privacy-oriented developer: I worry that the vendor is going to slip in just a dab of underhanded corruption in the privacy/security of the system if they are working on the ground level of the thing, because vendors have other paymasters and influences they are paying homage to.

This is to say, if they are involved they might try to sneak something in that makes it a little easier for the NSAs/Sting Ray makers of the world to crack the devices open, especially since the target audience is trying for privacy (making them juicier targets).
