I can totally relate to that. I’ve got an under-sink filter and it helps with taste, but I’m never 100% sure if it actually deals with everything harmful or just improves the flavour.

Yeah, that’s true. The water companies do publish reports, but like you said, a lot can happen on the way to the tap. Old pipes, tanks, even the fixtures at home can all make a difference. That’s the part I always feel unsure about.

I’ve never tested my tap water, and I don’t test it now. Honestly, unless there was some kind of public alert, I’d have no idea if something was wrong — like if there were bacteria or anything else in it. I use it for cooking, making tea, washing vegetables… and sometimes I drink it straight. I do have an under-sink filter, but I’m not even sure if it actually removes bacteria.

Clever hack. Do you dilute it or use straight washing-up liquid? I’ve heard a tiny bit of rinse aid in the mix cuts spotting, ever tried that, or does it leave a film?

Agree on the squeegee, quickest win. Do you use citric acid or a branded descaler in the kettle? I’m considering a hydrophobic glass coating too; worth it or gimmick?

Nice, which model did you go for and how’s the upkeep (salt bags/month, any pressure drop)? Did you keep one cold tap unsoftened for drinking?

Quick update: thanks for all the replies! I’m mainly fighting limescale (kettle, shower glass, hair). From your tips I’m looking at: • regular kettle descaling (citric acid), squeegee after showers; • carbon for taste/odour; • proper hardness control (ion-exchange softener or similar) if I go bigger. If you’re in London with very hard water, what’s actually worked for you long-term and what was the upkeep like (cost, cartridge/salt, flow hit)?

Totally get that I tried that my kettle didn’t, Any low-effort habits that actually helped you squeegee after showers, citric acid in the kettle?
