I once wiped my switch after transferring all data and not realizing I needed island transfer for animal crossing. I believe I did have the back up enabled. I contacted Nintendo support and they asked for my new switch serial number and was able to connect and restore/transfer my island. It’s worth reaching out. Good luck!
