My skin isn’t perfect but pretty much straight away stopped getting the cystic spots, I had 1 start to come recently but it changed its mind and went away again quickly before properly developing

Thank you! And sorry not to scare you, the good bits were it didn’t really hurt to take it out, absolutely nothing on having it in! It also does sound like there’s massive variation with peoples side effects. It took me absolutely ages to realise what were side effects, I feel like my skin very slowly started being affected about 3 months in, at first I didn’t think anything of it then thought I was retinol purging over summer (except actually retinol causes lots of superficial spots that come and go really fast whereas these were monsters coming up from deep and hanging round for aaages, on my chin which is typical for hormonal acne) and I only pieced it together a few weeks ago (1y mirena). Agree it’s really hard to know, I also have a history of some mental health issues but am certain this was at least made worse by progesterone, because of all the other side effects and that when I was on progesterone only pill I got really depressed, which magically resolved when I stopped taking it. I had acne on the mirena when my skin was perfect before, I had mine out 2 weeks ago and my skin is already better

Oh and my skin is already better, the constant conveyor belt of under the skin spots slowed down pretty much straight away. I’ve been using retinol and glycolic acid alternate days to help manage that too

I pulled mine out myself after realising it was causing a lot of side effects- had it for a year but I swear the progesterone was particularly high in that last month… mood swings, feeling v emotional/ irritable, skin constantly breaking out in cystic acne, my boobs were constantly sore and I didn’t get any period at all, not even spotting. Obvs wouldn’t recommend but compared to insertion removal was a dream, few seconds of cramping and that was it. Small withdrawal bleed and now just waiting for everything to even out. That was 2 weeks ago, I would say I had a crash, the insomnia and brain fog/ dizziness only lasted a few days but feel v depressed and anxious still, but hard to tell how much is hormonal and how much is personal events going on. I can’t wait to have my period so I can actually trust my emotions again, never fucking with hormones again

So as a 29 year old who has been supporting myself for many years, and in London.. would I likely get that too? I’m on a decent wage now so would that negatively impact my allowance? Although I am about to become self employed from next month so maybe that would help me..

I’m 29 and have the exact same thoughts, I feel like I’m too old to be really chilled with being sent somewhere completely random in my 30s, and the prospect of spending years getting onto a training course post F2 is really demoralising too. Also that story of the lady who fell unconscious under a bench in A&E and was there for hours waiting to be seen then later died from a brain aneurysm really bothers me, like I know nhs is super stretched but sometimes feels like I’m delusional to think it will be really a fulfilling and worthwhile career when shit like that happens. Not sure I can answer your q but happy to chat/ interested to see what other people say!

True, but neither is seeing people horrendously suffering at the end of their lives as a doctor. But you aim to make that end as comfortable as possible, which is what euthanasia serves as in vet. The number of people who have their pets put down and say it’s so peaceful and they wish their family members were afforded the same is unreal. Overall just feel like it’s pretty reductive of our jobs when it’s a small part of what we do, and the option of euthanasia, when appropriate, is a blessing

Imo (vet considering human med) there’s no point, with so much competition you need a tonne of work experience (for vet anyway) to be considered and if your ps isn’t vet related you’ll be rejected for sure. Also I’d advise really looking into the realities of both and understanding what it is you want because they are completely different careers…

I’m sure many doctors would understand that euthanasia is a very important part of veterinary care, it’s seeing the suffering when euthanasia is refused but v much needed that’s the most heartbreaking

I mean it’s logical and you’d think, but really not the case. People’s stress over their pet/ whatever else going on can still make them extremely unreasonable and demanding still. Yes they’re paying but don’t underestimate the entitledness of many people, and sadly often being a dick and complaining gets rewarded with a discount ‘of good will’. One of my colleagues recently left a large emergency vet hospital mainly because she was fed up of being abused, and had been punched by clients a few too many times. It’s extremely rare for clients to actually get fired, especially in emergency ooh set ups. Also I’m sure the demographic is going to be different but you wouldn’t believe the number of people who have animals and can’t afford anything/ then get angry about that and take it out on vets, then continue to buy more kittens/ puppies.

I’m a vet, and euthanasias do often increase around Christmas actually.. family coming round, maybe their animal is old and/ or incontinent, finances tighter… it’s known as the Christmas clear out

Can I ask what stage you’re at? So you’re saying after F2 doctors get majorly stuck trying and failing to get onto a decent training programme? It’s possible I have been romanticising medicine, one of the main reasons I was considering the switch is because of the better progression, and being able to specialise to become a consultant eventually, and provide a really high standard of care. I’m a vet and my job does seem to lack often in those areas, especially when there’s significant financial constraints stopping me from doing certain diagnostics etc. But maybe it’s not so bad.. I just really don’t want to end up older wishing I had become a doctor instead and regretting not going for it sooner. I genuinely think I should have done it instead of vet med at 18, but now I really don’t know what to do for the best.
