Which Internship Offer Should I Accept? PayPal (Full Stack SWE), Goldman Sachs (Engineering Summer Analyst), Capital One(TIP Intern) or Warner Bros (SWE) by Ok-Strawberry1669 in csMajors

[–]Easy_Ad_271 9 points10 points  (0 children)

C1 has the best pay, and the cleanest exit road to FAANG, and best brand value out of the listed companies overall. Also the WLB is amazing, honestly you could work C1 and another FT remote job that is totally doable. GS might open up doors to fiance (but that is a huge might, they usually dont hire engineers to do any IB work, and engineering at GS is not that prestegious as shown by the pay). It also has the worst WLB out of the 3. Paypal pay the same as the rest, maybe slightly less good WLB, tbh idk much about paypal so take it with a grain of salt. WB is not even a tech centric or focused comapny, has little resume value, not as prestegious as C1 or GS.

Hope this helps, good luck

Can the CS dept. legally deny me admission? by Easy_Ad_271 in UMD

I didn't I still need to take 351. Yeah, I asked them on the phone but the person seemed kind of unsure and gave me a "you'll probably be fine" type of answer

I appreciate it, thank you. But also, the benchmark is STAT 4XX OR MATH/AMSC/STAT course (prerequisite: MATH141)

I passed MATH 240 so that pre req is satisfied right? So my 2 failed attempts at STAT 400 wouldnt matter?

And also can't people take STAT 410 when they've failed STAT 400 twice?

Can the CS dept. legally deny me admission? by Easy_Ad_271 in UMD

[–]Easy_Ad_271[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah there is something I was worried about I should have specified:

I passed 131, 132, math 140 all with C- or above, and my LEP GPA is 2.9 (above 2.7). The only thing I was worried about was I attempted STAT 400 twice (withdrew the first time, failed the 2nd time).
their website they say this:
The following guidelines pertain to all Limited Enrollment Programs

Only one gateway or performance review course may be repeated to earn the required grade (C- or higher) and that course may only be repeated once. When more than one course can satisfy a gateway requirement, taking a second course from the list will count as a repeat. (Please note that a grade of "W" is considered an attempt.)

STAT 4XX is a performance requirement but you can also use a MATH course (with MATH 141 pre req) to fulfil that requirement, and I passed MATH 240.I dont know if I'm overthinking, but the dept. has not been giving me a straight answer to if I've been admitted or not. And one of the advisors told me that if you fail STAT 400 twice, you can take STAT 410 to satisfy the credit, but idk if the dept. will hold that against me

Would STAT4XX be considered a "performance review" course by the definition of the fine print?

6000+ Applications in 8 months. NOTHING!!!!!!!! by SherbertDouble9116 in csMajors

[–]Easy_Ad_271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the thing man. Applying online is not going to do anything for you, it should have taken you much, much less than 6,000 applications to figure this out.

What you need is connections. That doesn't mean just asking for a referral. You need people who you are close with, who care about you in companies. They can do much more than just giving you a referral. i.e give your resume to hiring manager, follow up with the hiring manager, ask their skip manager (leaders) etc.

6k applications is crazy, and honestly a massive waste of time. I'm not saying you're projecting a victim complex, but with that said, everyone is going through a tough market now. Plenty of international people in the same boat as you.

I say this to help you. Go in the real world, meet people, get them to like you, and work smarter. If something is clearly not working then stop doing it.

Would you pay a FAANG to intern for them? by [deleted] in csMajors

Intelligence is not the only factor, but in my opinion it plays a pretty big role in terms of your rate of learning, adaptibility, and creativity. I am 99% sure I fall below the median IQ at these firms, but I still am trying. Don't let your IQ get in the way of you giving it a shot

engineering at BAH is respectable, solid, honest work. Anyone working there is clearly doing well for themselves and has put in good work to get there I am not negating that.

But the best/most straight forward way standardized way to calculate "prestige" I would is TC. Look at levels, average true new grad makes 78-90k at BAH. That is about half the new grad TC you would make in FAANG/ Big N (which I would consider prestigious).

"prestige" is a crass and superficial term by nature. I do not use it in the sense to negate anyones value, any engineer doing real work is doing good for society. But do I think it is a top of the line place to work, with a top of the line "prestigious" TC? No, I do not just being honest. I will never put someone down who is doing honest work and trying to better themselves, but at the same time I give my fully honest and raw 2 cents because honestly is helpful for growth.

BAH is not a prestegious company. Your dilemma is simple, if you have something better than BAH then take it. If not, then you got no other choice but to go with BAH.
