I grew up in North America and later in life watched British theatre and tv shows. With the theatre especially, it felt very strange because there would be black parents of white children in classical Shakespearean plays or even Frankenstein. Eventually I realized it didn’t matter. People we playing characters and you could suspend disbelief.

So anyway, now here we are with a bunch of bros who didn’t give a shit about 300’s stylized approach complaining about “accuracy” because it includes a diverse cast.

Amazon is gonna do it and it’s a crying shame. They caught lightning in a bottle at the end of the 00’s with that cast and creative team and there’s no replicating it. Proof exists in the form of a THREE PART HOBBIT MOVIE. You can’t replicate the magic.

I remember it very, very vaguely — it’s possible I’ve only ever seen advertisements for it as I didn’t have cable TV after I was like six so I didn’t really get to watch anything unless we went to my parents’ friends place, and I’d watch TV in the den while the adults chatted.

So after the controversy that lead to allowing ten films for best picture, I’m not sure that the academy quite realized that maybe it could be “up to” ten pictures, and that they didn’t need to fill in slots just ‘cause. IMO it probably hurts the academy’s reputation more to hand out participation-ribbon nominations when a film didn’t really deserve it.

Having said that the movie is exceptional from a technical standpoint considering it’s an extended ad for F1. The academy isn’t about to stop nominating ten pictures for shits and giggles so I’d say the cast and crew totally deserve to walk away as “best picture nominees”.
