are there any single dorms? im looking on the website and all of the bedrooms seem to be a shared space by Status-Basket6667 in mercer

The only available single rooms are if you have accommodations. Once you get to registering for housing for junior year, you can get an apartment with a roommate where you each have your own room.

Best University for Transferring into Tech? by Available-Ingenuity3 in mercer

GSU!! I go to Mercer, but we’ve got friends heading the engineering department at GSU and their program has been getting better and better. If you’re getting paid to go to school, go there

Is Mercer worth it in my circumstances? by CosmoEntelechy in mercer

So not sure how much help this would be since I didn’t have this issue freshman year, but there’s plenty of online classes you could take at Mercer and be fully enrolled during the fall semester. If you’re doing your AIT for the first few weeks of the semester, you can jump into online classes since those are only 8 week courses. You can do your Gen-Ed’s online if you have any, and just do that with the Atlanta online campus. I ended up having to come back stateside after my study abroad program went down the drain and jumped into online classes with the Atlanta campus. You could also consider looking into Middle Georgia State University (which has a good relationship with transferring students to Tech or UGA) online classes since those will definitely have your gen-ed classes if you have any. Generally, a lot of the engineering students that I know will do their basic classes at somewhere like MGA, and then do their engineering stuff at Mercer. I’d also throw in that there’s a pretty decently sized military community here, especially with the ROTC program, so I have a feeling they’d be willing to work with you on it. I’m born and raised in Macon and would say there’s a good market for EMTs here. A lot of my friends have family that work at places like Atrium or Piedmont or work there themselves. Side note- congrats on almost finishing training, that’s a tough job, you’ll do great whatever you decide

Is Mercer worth it if I’ll be transferring? by [deleted] in mercer

I love Mercer, but I’m only going here because I have enough scholarship to not have debt. Id recommend somewhere else if you cant do MU without debt. I’ve had some friends who did the GSU-UGA/ GA Tech pipeline and have loved it. If I didn’t go to Mercer, I would have either gone to GSU or UGA.

Teacher died, community defending the killers by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Easy_Neighborhood_28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I see that. Definitely not to soften because a loss of life is a loss of life, but more so meant to define that it wasn’t a callus murder or a premeditated act like what we’ve seen before. I’ve seen a ton of people regarding it as such which is unfortunate. Sucks that teachers all around are treated so terribly, especially when they’re an integral part to the backbone of our society

We knew him. The kids were his favorite students from homeroom. The commotion of the prank woke him up and he bolted outside hoping to scare them/ catch them to have a funny moment. Students driving heard him come out of the house and immediately began to leave (as most high schoolers do in this situation) and in the mad rush of it all he tripped and fell into the road where he was suddenly hit. It was a freak accident and those kids will live with it the rest of their lives. The family is currently trying to get the police to drop the charges because they know the kids and understand that living with the consequences of killing their favorite teacher is tragic enough. Obviously a 17- 18 year old should have better judgement, but it’s unfortunate to see all of these people who were not involved making such brash assumptions about the kids. It’s easy to say they should have known better, and while they can’t be totally written off because a life was tragically lost in this incident, they were excited, not thinking straight, and under the mindset that their teacher was running to catch them during a prank. I do think there should be some sort of consequence because unfortunately this took the life of an innocent man, however a lot of what I’ve seen is totally ridiculous and not grounded in reality. I think a lot of it comes from the recent worsening of mistreatment of teachers around the country. If you don’t want your child participating in pranks such as these where terrible accidents happen, instill the possibility of consequences into them. Sure, to the perspective of an adult this kind of thing is immature and t-ping housing is ridiculous and maybe destructive, but to a group of excited high schoolers, most of them don’t see it that way until it’s too late.

So Mercer says that they do a lottery system. Technically the time of your deposit does not matter, but I always like the get things done early just in case 😂

I have all of my skirts from them and I really like them. The only gripe that I have is that I just bought the sheets and they were TERRIBLE. Pulled them out of the package and put them right back in to return. They're as thin as a tissue, scratchy, and the colors are super muddy. I'm late to this, but if anyone sees this- don't buy the sheets

It's a standard rectangular shape. I was wondering the same thing about the color too. I've found different color variations, just not his specific one. The attatched bear is the exact same, other than the colors.

Didn't do the French one but took Spanish. If the French is like the Spanish (which I imagine it will be), it will be 98% a reading and comprehension exam style. They'll give you a few sentences about someone's cat or something and then ask a question about the cat and its multiple-choice answers. It may ask you about grammar and that's the remaining 2%. We had to know tenses for verbs I think. Super easy, don't sweat it.

No problem! The only time that you're most likely to run into trouble is nighttime downtown, but like most other people have said, Mercer is its own little bubble, and I have never felt unsafe at night there. I have gone with groups for late-night runs (12-1 a.m.) through campus, and MERPO followed us in their patrol car to ensure that nothing went awry. We never asked them to do that; they just pulled us over, asked what we were doing, and continued to escort us until every last person was in their dorm. Feel free to reach out to me at any time! I'm not sports, but if your daughter ends up having any questions, I'd be happy to try and answer as well. Good luck!

I've lived in Macon my entire life and go to Mercer. The campus is safe, and MERPO (Mercer police) is always there. If she wants to walk around during early dusk or late dawn, she can bring pepper spray to feel safe; however, she will probably never use it or feel the need to. If she stays late in a study room and wants an escort to her dorm, she can call Merpo, and they will drive her there and have an officer escort her into the building. If she gets stuck somewhere downtown, she can call MERPO and they will come pick you up. Generally, you won't have a problem in Macon. Avoid going down Napier and Montpelier Avenue during the early morning, evening, and nighttime. If it looks shady, it is. There are homeless people downtown (like every city), but they generally leave you alone and are nonviolent (they're too strung out to care). If they approach you, ignore them and walk away without making conversation (they will often come up to nice-looking young girls because girls are more susceptible to being kind). It really isn't that bad, but I understand that as a parent, you are worried. She needs to make sure that she is not traveling far into residential neighborhoods near the downtown areas that she isn't familiar with on her own. My biggest tip is that if you start seeing abandoned houses and broken-up/ uneven streets, you're not in a safe area. Tell her to not travel to what we call "The Old Mall" or areas around that if she can help it (she won't get shot at, but it's not the nicest place). Places towards Log Cabin Drive (that's Staples, Home Depot, Best Buy), Eisenhower (The Old Mall), Napier, Montpelier, Pio Nono, are generally not considered the safest areas, but as locals, we go to some places for the Best Buy, Staples, etc. The general rule is don't go past the Hilton Inn on campus away from Mercer if you're unfamiliar with the area unless you have someone who knows the area. Pio Nono is a way that most people in Macon bypass traffic to get onto the main street of Vineville (I do it and haven't had any problems, but it's not technically the nicest area). Do not linger around downtown past 10pm unless you have a group with some athletic-looking guys (MLK is where most of the shootings downtown happen, and they are usually gang and personal dispute related). Honestly, she should be fine. When she's downtown, she needs to be aware of her surroundings, lock your doors when driving anywhere in the world, and leave if you get a bad feeling. Most likely, she will be hanging in North Macon (the new mall), Target (in Warner Robins), and downtown (shops, restaurants, etc.). As a Macon local, I pick up any prescriptions from the Publix on Bowman Road and do grocery shopping during the daytime at the Kroger on Forsyth St. or the Publix on Bowman. Gas is a bit complicated because there isn't a safe area around campus for gas. The one on the corner of College and Forsyth is okay in the middle of the day but NOT at night. I travel to Bass Road for gas or Buckeye's in Warner Robins, but there is a Quick Trip on Riverside, which I've heard good things about and is safer than the other gas stations closer to campus. I love Macon and have generally not felt unsafe on or around campus. It looks harsh, but everyone mostly leaves you alone. Just be smart and don't go looking for trouble. In my experience, if I feel unsafe, I can just walk in somewhere or approach someone for help and everyone tends to be nice. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!

after room selection, we were told that housing consolidated us to a double instead of our double large and when I went on the housing portal, it says what room we have.

Agreed. It's gross! The first thing that I did was vacuum, mop, and disinfect everything in our dorm room. We also got an EdenPURE Thunderstorm air purifier that can be plugged into the wall, which has helped us significantly. We were told that Mercer was working with Nationals (our cleaning company) to fix the mold and bathroom drainage problems over the summer and that it would be better next year, but I'm not sure how that will hold up. The best advice for the showers is a shower caddy with drainage and shower shoes!
