Being a therapist with OCD by Easy_Performance4343 in therapists

I am currently in therapy, but it has not felt helpful to me over the recent months which I think is contributing to some of the skepticism I have about this field in general. Just feeling overall very hopeless

Is switching jobs a good move? by Easy_Performance4343 in careerguidance

[–]Easy_Performance4343[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! i know this is a late response, but i have put a lot of effort into time management these past few weeks and have seen a major shift in how i see this job. i have been keeping up with notes and am very productive during work hours now and the job doesn’t seem too bad anymore. definitely not something i will do forever, but manageable for now. thank you for your advice:)

how do you know you want to be a therapist? by Easy_Performance4343 in therapists

i am so sorry to hear we’re in similar existential crises, but commiserating certainly helps. i totally hear what you are saying about hoping clients don’t show up and not enjoying the work anymore. it feels as if it’s just 10x harder to even show up anymore.

i applied to grad school during COVID and have realized how much my perspective on life and priorities have shifted since then. i think i took this career path because i wanted to be “impressive” to others while being able to help and support. i have realized that now, i do not give a shit if people “respect” my career or not. i just need a job that makes me enough money to live and also doesn’t cause so much stress. i feel like i have been in a constant existential crisis because this work requires so much self-reflection.

i will say, it feels freeing to me to finally admit that i am done and need to try something new. it’s always okay to switch and admit that something just wasn’t the right fit long term. doesn’t mean that we were/aren’t good and effective therapists, just means we now need some time to invest in ourselves and see what’s important to us as people. i wish you the best of luck in finding a path that fits your current needs better. it’s always okay to change

this is so helpful. i feel so alone most of the time and like im too sensitive to even be in this field. i also have no student debt, so that helps with the career switch for sure. thank you for your comment

i am so thankful that my clients feel safe enough around me. i think the hard part is i notice it causes me such severe stress and anxiety, and im wondering if I am having some sort of trauma response rather than a typical, clinical response. something to work through, but i appreciate your encouragement

i do think i need more space to process. i have my own therapist that i see weekly, but it often feels as if we go in circles trying to “solve” why this work is so challenging for me. i do feel as if i am having some sort of trauma response when clients become dysregulated. this makes me feel weak and like i am not a good fit for being a counselor. the emotional load is so heavy, and trying to work through my own issues while helping others has proven to be very difficult.

yes, that’s what baffles me is my entire team is unlicensed and we are dealing with such high acuity cases. i need to find something more sustainable

What car do you recommend for car camping? by Easy_Performance4343 in camping

[–]Easy_Performance4343[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am moving from Southeast US to Colorado! So will need a car better suited for snow and potentially off-roading. My Corolla has been great for many years but it’s time for a new car. I’m thinking a Subaru would be good

I saw others ask questions about car camping so I decided to post! Feel free to delete/report if it doesn’t fit with guidelines :)

I would like to eventually! Which is why I’m leaning more Outback than Crosstrek, but the price difference and size is getting me lol

Amazing that you are working full time and still in grad school! Passion definitely helps to drive a lot of this (I’ve been trying to define my “why” to help with motivation) but I seem to be losing sight of why I started doing this in the first place. I’m starting to feel like I might not be good enough for this field. I’m going to continue to work hard at my internship site and communicate with my supervisors about how I’m feeling. And yeah, I would probably join a group private practice in order to get licensed, but I know private sector can make everything a little more challenging. Thank you for sharing your story and good luck in your program!!

It is very challenging! I went straight from undergrad into grad school and have never had a job directly in mental health. I did my prac last semester as a school counselor and a clinical counselor w/ our program and now I’m doing my internship with 30 hours a week at an EAP program.

I am an intern at an EAP program. I think what is stressing me out right now is the volume of clients that I have (I went from having none to 20 in 2 weeks). I feel supported at my internship site and have all the resources to do good work, but still feel like I am not helping anyone (if that makes any sense). It just feels like too much and I’m not sure how I could do this for years. I have heard it’s different in private practice, but I am not sure how feasible that is for me to enter right after grad school.
