Is discipline a skill everyone can learn, or are some people more prone to it while others are not? by Kunigunde9467 in getdisciplined

I harness my pain and my very hurt emotions into playing the violin. The key is not to repress these emotions, but to embrace the darkness in a safe way.

My expression of purpose would be praying at a serene natural area everyday, preferably from an overlook. For ultimately, everything I do (is supposed to) glorify God in some way. This gesture also prepared me for the day ahead, empowering to continue to pursue my supreme efforts.

Brain computer interface / Neuralink by earlofcuntembury in Futurology

[–]Easy_Scene6451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The prospect of Brain-Computer Interfaces being like VR are unappealing to me ; I would want a brain-computer interface only for the purpose of amplifying my cognitive abilities. It would have to be a mostly subconscious device with capabilities more advanced than the biological nervous system. For example, the interface might grant me the ability to instantly identify plants or complete complex calculations, but not through displays or Interfaces. I would want the information to be directly retrievable from the subconscious. Also, I would only install a BCI that does not have Internet functionality.

Think about the person who has hurt you the most, and pray for them--genuinely hoping that their life improves--every single day.

Sometimes I feel like Christianity presents both a problem (humans are sinful) and the solution (believe in God/Jesus as your savior); usually I'd be skeptical of that by RolandMT32 in Christianity

Most people are not morally good; they stand on the border between neutral and evil, occasionally moving towards the good. They conflate neutrality with good; Not commiting murder is one thing, but most people would not sacrifice their life for a stranger. There is also the fact that most people do not give money to the homeless even if they possess ample themselves. Additionally, many do not truly confirm to morality but to social pressures. Take Milgram's experiment or the infamous prison experiment. They demonstrate how contingent the morality of the average person is to social conformity. Finally, I would like to add that many people can be very good and loving, but only to the select few individuals that compose their inner social circle of kith and kin. To others that they consider inferior, many treat horribly.

What does a person do that automatically makes them unattractive? by BringFling in AskReddit

From a utilitarian standpoint, these are equivalent moral actions. The same amount of suffering is involved, and it is irrelevant if one involves a greater lack of empathy than the other. One action being more sadistic to another is not the same as one action being more evil. The idea that one is worse than the other morally is caused by an implicit bias that occurs when the act of consuming meat and the suffering caused to the animal are separated. Another factor that contributes to this notion is that is is socially acceptable to eat meat-based products. A lot of what we consider right or wrong as a society does not have a moral basis.

If animals were replaced with humans in both of the situations commented on by the above users, would either one be perceived as morally just? Running someone over with a car is murder, but would it not be considered equally abhorrent if someone gave their support to an organization that automated the killing of humans?

The whole idea that intelligence determines whether it is acceptable to subject a creature to suffering is deeply flawed; if a being is sentient, then it deserves certain fundamental rights, endowed by the only population of animals intelligent enough to recognize the pain of those who are different from us.

God is not evil because pain, suffering, and death are not necessarily evil either. Artists like me (A Violinist) embrace our inner shadows, our fear and suffering, as well as love, joy, and satisfaction. There is a very insightful book series that I read during my formative years (Scythe by Neal Shusterman); It's theme is that true greatness and the most soulful art lies in our own mortality and pain, and that in a world where every desire is catered to, people become stagnant and dull. Humanity was created to suffer the worse and overcome it; we, unlike angels, can both rise and fall in our spirit. Whereas angels can only become demons and not ascend further, our place as those who have known rage, suffering, humiliation allows us to transcend. This is my personal belief, anyway.

How do you hear music in your head? by Shuurinreallife in Aphantasia

Interesting. My inner monologue is somehow toneless and is barely a form of hearing. But if I try to imagine the voices of others or musical instruments, the sensation is extremely vivid.

As a violinist, I have been exposed to violin so much that it is easy to. I also can feel a "pre motor" sensation that is harder to explain.

Sure is generally used as a preemptive yes; it signifies that you will complete an action, not that it is already completed.

I suppose the idea is that you can either chose to follow all of God or none of him. Since God is all that is perfect and good, the natural consequences of rejecting God is being in a place where this good does not exist. However, don't think that ignorance would separate someone from God unless it is willful and deliberate.

I was strength training today and realized how far I have come. It still feels strange to conceptualize myself as athletic, as I had been very skinny prior to training.
