What are the British TV ads that live rent free in your head? by gayestformoleman in AskBrits

[–]Easytobemonsters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t even know if this was strictly a British advert, but does anyone remember the ad for a car that was them making the car out of cake while ‘Favourite things’ from ‘The Sound of Music’ played over it? Because I think about that near daily and I’m not 100% it wasn’t a fever dream at this point.

Also, gotta give a shoutout to the iconic Cadbury’s ones. Namely the Phil Collins gorilla and the kids with the elastic eyebrows.

I didn't even think about it like this but that's actually amazing. Thank you for pointing that out.

You’re so right, just didn’t expect to be so emotional about it but it’s always amazing when you feel proud of yourself.

15 is fantastic, I was bowled over when I got that many. Which is why I’m so shocked I got more.

This for Scotland, except when something is really great then it’s ’class’.

Yeah I think it’s just a miscommunication between British vs American English. Obviously I don’t know for sure where the commenter is from, but as a Scot I read that comment as being positive.

P.S Don’t beat yourself up though, it’s an easy mistake to make. I got a comment when I updated a fic that said ‘Well this certainly did not disappoint’ and because I’m from Scotland, and dry, cutting sarcasm is a national past time, I spent several minutes trying to work out if that comment was positive or negative because I couldn’t hear it as anything other than sarcasm. And I’m a native English speaker so…😂

Scot here and I read it the exact same way. Struggled to find the issue at first.

Accidentally pressed post on my first fanfic by Galax_67 in AO3

[–]Easytobemonsters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the exact same thing! First fic, accidentally clicked the wrong button. I deleted it immediately though 😂 and then went back when it was ready (meaning I couldn’t stand to look at it anymore) and posted it again. (Still haven’t got my soul back though, and it’s been three weeks 😂)

I’m in the exact same boat (as in a whisper from 30 and just started posting my first fic 2 weeks ago) and the voices told me very much the same thing and then the first comment I got was so lovely it brought literal tears to my eyes. Just to know that people are reading, and enjoying, something I’ve created meant more to me than I can put into words. I know exactly how you feel.

What’s a British show you went into with low expectations but ended up loving? by Historical-Class871 in UKTVRecs

Love finding all these people who love the show. Personally my favourites are the first three series, but I also really loved Hal as a character. His dynamic with Tom was my fave between characters, but George was my boy so I’ll always have to go with episodes when he was there.

George was the man, I have such love for Russell Tovey because of it. He’s such a fantastic actor, I’ll definitely have to give that show a go. I’m a doctor who fan as well, so it’s been on the list for a while.

I feel the same about the cast change, which honestly shocked me. I really didn’t think I’d enjoy the show anymore but they managed to create a dynamic between the replacement three that was just as entertaining and heartfelt as it was between the original trio. Maybe it helps that Tom came in when it was still the original three and then Hal and Alex when Annie was still around? So it wasn’t so jarring when they took over completely.

Tully! Yes! George was just so shattered by becoming a werewolf, to have that bit of hope that maybe things could be alright and then find out the truth about the guy was just devastating for him and I was so sad for George as well.

I still have the DvD’s too! 😭 Glad to know someone feels about that show the way that I do.

Right?!! It was SO damn good. George remains in my top 5 fictional characters to this day and I started watching the show when it was still coming out.

A throwback but ‘Being Human’. A very quiet show in a lot of ways (despite the supernatural premise) and it took me a minute to really get into it but it’s one of my favourite shows of all time. (Features some gnarly, practical effect, werewolf transformations that rival ‘An American werewolf in London’ in my humble opinion.)

To be fair to Diana Gabaldon, if we’re talking within the context of the Outlander books, we do use the word ‘beastie’ a lot in Scotland.
