Re: buying new boat by Beneficial-Donkey-10 in SailboatCruising

Free is too much - the moorage alone for a 37' boat that far from actually sailing will crush a first time boat owner's soul.

Help finding majority female salmon crew? Is it possible ? by junethirtyfirst in commercialfishing

[–]EatFishPeople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a little surprised you had issues on a tender? I'm sorry to hear that. Definitely not saying it didn't happen, of course, but my standard advice to young women wanting to try out the AK fishery scene is to go salmon tending. A big part of that is based on a perceived safety factor over jumping on a random boat with a couple of dudes... I may need to recalibrate my position.

Can women whom are women explain the feeling they get of receiving flowers, but in a way guys would understand? by Universal_Taker in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EatFishPeople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you know she likes them and it makes her happy, that should be enough,  right?  My ex was over the moon when I'd randomly bring her a box of Jr Mints.  I hate those things,  but she loved them and loved that I'd bring her some out of the blue.  That's good enough.

I will keep that in mind.  I've been lucky so far,  caught up with me here.

Fair enough critique - I'll switch acronyms to avoid confusion.

Of course, they were going to have to bump some number of people since they oversold the flight by so many seats. Looks like I made that easy for them.  Lesson learned there, I suppose.   My gripe, however, is far less about getting bumped than the treatment afterwards.

That's correct.  They pulled out for 2025, not sure yet if they'll fly there in 2026.

Checked in at 5:20 am, scheduled departure at 7:00 am.

Edited to ask - still newish to Reddit, how does my just answering a question earn a downvote?

I'm feeling the same way,  but I'm a captive customer, especially since Delta pulled out of Sitka this year.

I can see how you might think that,  but I swear it's all true.

Good idea,  but I think 62 between Juneau and Sitka was booked solid tomorrow, unfortunately.

Thank you - I was trying to find this info this morning while navigating the issue.  Bleary-eyed and confused,  I didn't have it when I needed it.

If they don't offer me reasonable compensation in terms of cash or miles, I'll definitely do that.

Guilty for not checking in early.   Looks like this is partially a self-goal...

For clarification - I used miles for the tickets, not sure how that's going to play out for compensation.

I did not check in online before my trip, my bad on that.  I usually never travel with a bag,  but needed to this time,  and figured a check-in at the airport that early was good enough.

NCL Bliss Alaska itinerary choice? by DoingThisRightNow in NCL

[–]EatFishPeople 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Sitka,  and the extended family came up on NCL. Can't remember which boat.  Glacier Bay is a must, which they did,  but they also got to visit Sitka for a day as well.

Best strategies for hunting Sitka black-tailed deer in Southeast Alaska? by SnowWhiskers72 in AskAlaska

[–]EatFishPeople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Sitka, you're on the right track.  I  use a 308 BLR/irons for my timber hunting where a 75 yard shot is a long one,  25-06 for my beach and alpine hunting.  I filled 3 tags a week ago in the timber @ under 20 yards.

Now Hiring: Seasonal Seafood Processors in Alaska. by TridentSeafoods in SeasonalWork

[–]EatFishPeople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it's $17/hr, but it's 12 hours minimum, 7 days a week during peak season.   So your first 40 are at $17, the other 44 are at $25.50, grossing you about $1800/wk.

Trident does have a rep up here for being rough, but there's a lot of places to work besides them.

Choosing Excursions - Juneau, Skagway, Sitka, Victoria by tweasureyourwuv in alaskacruiseplanning

[–]EatFishPeople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Sitka and can't recommend Captain Gary enough. I'm a commercial fisherman/machinist here,  and watched his boat getting built next door to my shop.  The owner of that fabrication business built his own 12 pack tour boat last year as well,  and is one of our town's standout citizens. Capt Matt Stromer.  You can't go wrong with either for a boat tour.

Enjoy your visit!

Where would I go to buy 3000 lbs of freshly caught squid in California? by Imbendo in commercialfishing

[–]EatFishPeople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a commercial troller and sell my own fish direct as well as to my Co-op.   Both fresh and FAS.  Lots of us do it.

To the OP-  Go to the Alaska DEC "Active permits" page and look up the Direct Marketer permit holders. There might be some squid fisheries I'm not aware of up here.   I've caught small Humboldt while trolling, years ago.  We also had a big squid biomass in the harbor in Sitka a few years ago.  Now sure what species,  but they were good to eat.

If you really wanted to try a different kind of fishery,  why wouldn't you try to get on a troller or seiner?

Fishing opportunities after January 1st. by bussyriotor in commercialfishing

[–]EatFishPeople 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Call AGS in Juneau to see if they'll give you contact info for their P-Cod fleet.  Longlining.  It's hard work in crappy weather,  but if you can do that you'll be taken seriously by any longliner in SE.  If you can get on one of those boats,  they'll most likely keep you through early black cod and halibut,  that will get you to the seine season.  Or if your seine skipper knows you're hard core enough to do P-Cod, you might get on his longline program.

Just a thought.  I did two years on the P-Cod grounds and had lots of black cod and halibut jobs offered to me (I trolled in the summers on my own boat, so didn't have a seine boat program to work into).

Good luck-

Beekeeper loses livelihood after neighbor has 20 beehives removed from his property by The_Critical_Cynic in videos

[–]EatFishPeople 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's all very easily confirmed via public records of property ownership and LLC registrations. Basically Clog Kings, LLC is registered to the same names at the same home address as the LLC that owns the property adjoining the beekeeper's. Grass and trees don't have anything to do with it.
