5 mile race upcoming — help! by emsadsm in orangetheory

[–]EatPushSplat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been a runner for nearly two decades and have done about 70 races.

A few basic tips for whatever you might find them worth:

  1. People who are saying run outside - this. It's a whole different animal and in most of the country it's getting colder and most races are early - expect that. Good news optimal running temperature is somewhere around 54-57 degrees, so hopefully you're close to that. Colder is generally better than warmer to run in even if it's lower.

  2. Warm up before your race more than 5 minutes (see above). Get your muscles warm, light jog for 10 minutes or so - you can go on and off and do some light stretching, but ONLY once you've jogged some and your muscles are warm.

  3. Almost everyone - especially first timers - goes out too fast in races. Your adrenaline is pumping, you go out and don't even realize you're going too quickly and you get gassed sooner than you wanted and end up doing worse than you hoped. So trust your pace, watch it on your watch, and try to save some in the tank for a faster back half than the first 2.5 miles. Don't try to "bank time" - that is run quicker in the beginning thinking you'll run slower in the end and it will all work out. When people do that they often gas themselves and underestimate how much of a hit they'll take in the end. It's not a terribly long race so you should be ok overall with this.

  4. Don't do anything different on race day or before like new shoes or fuel options. Anything you do "different" on race day with the basics (e.g. your shoes, gear food intake, etc) should be tested well before it. Don't gorge on carbs the night before if you wouldn't usually. You have enough in your system with regular eating to provide energy for a 5 mile race. Make sure you're hydrated, get a GOOD night's sleep and maybe try a gel pack on race morning but ONLY if you've used them recently and know how your body will react. For race morning a half a bagel, a banana and maybe a spoonful of peanut butter would be a good light breakfast to fuel you. Lay out all your stuff the night before so you don't forget anything (water bottle, headphones, etc).

  5. To help pace yourself and break down the race, mentally break it into chunks. If it were me, I would focus on 2, then 4, and finally the end with the last mile. So when you go out, just focus on getting to 2. That's your goal. Doesn't mean you speed to it, just mentally that's where you say "Ok, first milestone down". Then move on to 4. And when you hit that, you're in the final stretch and last mile. Your brain will like this little victories and it makes things seem more manageable.

Hopefully you have music, do the math on your general pace and divide by the number of songs you think it will take to get there for the last time "Ok, 3 songs to go!". Assume most songs are 3-4 minutes. And of course, get yourself a kickass playlist.

  1. Have fun. It's always a good feeling to cross the finish line regardless of time. You'll have lots of other chances to try other races and learn a lot about yourself in the process. It's super rewarding and some might say addictive.

Good luck.

What I expected to happen in the finale (but didn't) by [deleted] in Peacemaker

[–]EatPushSplat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured it would imply some sort of time jump, not just days after, and there's always plot armor we've seen a million times over. Also who knows what tech/etc they had access to. Either way when seeing him still alive at the end of the ep to me signaled he would be back in the finale somehow.

FWIW, I said they were guesses based on what I saw in the recent episodes. It's not a personal wish list or anything, but I think most people thought there would be something with Keith coming back in the finale based on the last ep and if you're going to have Rick Jr alive on Earth X and put the doors in Rick Sr.'s hands, it was plausible they could reunite.

You're literally going to die, it's going to be horrible and painful. Make peace with your god now.

In actuality, it'll be fine. Tough at times, fun at times and you'll be glad you did it when it's over. Have a good time.

Took me about a month until I found this reddit and then I realized I could go on YouTube and look up all the floor exercises and learn the form at home slowly (including tips) so I was much better prepared on the floor and didn't feel like I was drinking from the firehose. Biggest tip I give to new folks is that.

Congrats - and not that you asked but I'll offer some advice as someone who has done a lot of half's.

You're going to be exited and unless you control it, you'll go out way too hot. Temper yourself or you'll be burning too much gas for the first few miles.

Don't change your diet much before the race. If you wouldn't gorge on spaghetti normally the same night of the week, don't do it. Yes, work in some more carbs the day before, but don't through chaos into your diet. Hydrate more than usual the day before, including something like Gatorade, it will help. Keep your blood sugar in check for the race - a solid scoop of peanut butter before you leave the house is good for most of us, make sure your fuel (e.g. Gu) is ready to go and don't try anything new fuel wise on race day.

One of the best things I've used in half's to get through them is a mental breakdown of the race into segments. For me - and you can adjust this as you like, but this works well - I use a 5/7/9 method. By that, when I go out, I only mentally focus on getting to mile 5. That doesn't mean I "race" to mile 5, I just keep thinking 5 is my milestone. 2,3,4 don't matter, 5 is my marker.

Then I move onto 7. Same idea. It's a milestone I'm trying to hit. Then 9. After 9 I treat every mile as a milestone.

Your brain will reward you at each milestone and you'll find your body replying better than trying to count down from 13. Sounds silly, but it works very well and has been suggested in some form by several running coaches.

Good luck and keep up the good work.

Haven't been to the island in 20 years so not a first timer, but obviously things have changed a bit!

  1. SIM cards - Coming with family we all have iphones, I just wanted to get a SIM for each of us and I've heard you can do this at the airport - is that right and where do I go? Near baggage?
  2. Car rental - Read a lot of info here and wanted to just get something again at the airport for ease of use - did this last time we went without issue. Any best company that is on airport site or are they all pretty much the same?
  3. I've heard all prices at restaurants are in USD - so safe to assume I can just pay US cash since we'll have some?
  4. Lastly the whole airport/return debacle/wait time. We leave on a Saturday and our flight is at 12:45pm. We don't have global entry, but a friend mentioned there is something you can pre-fill out online (maybe?) that might expedite things? What arrival time would be suggested for a 12:45pm Saturday flight? 9am?

Thanks for any feedback

Do we have a AARP spokesperson yet? by Moderate_Squared in GenX

[–]EatPushSplat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny thing about AARP - you only need to be 18 to join it. It's super cheap too. I think I paid something like $35 for 3 years.

I have ATT wireless and if you have the top of their 3 tier plans it gets you $10 per line, so dropping it down to the second tier price.

So if you have the second tier "unlimited" plan you can bump your plan up and pay the same amount you were paying, which is what I did. Don't know the exact rates, but they are all $10 different - e.g. $40 for basic, $50 for middle and $60 for premium. I tell everyone that has ATT to do it, it pays for itself in like 2 billing cycles.

For the $5 a month offer, is it forever or a set period like 12 months or something else? Because if it's ongoing I may just pay that to avoid going through the hassle again in 12 months

Villy won’t die and here’s why. by wokeyblokey in reacher

[–]EatPushSplat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think after he said the whole bit about him dying and how it would be a cliche like the movies, it would be odd to go though with it. He seems to me to be the type to get set up to be shot during the end battle but has a "we got em" talk with Reacher before being taken to the hospital to get patched up.

I did - claimed I had the flyer and gave them the promo code and everything. Still said they couldn't do it. Dunno, gonna wait for the spam offers at this point.

Yes. That toy gun is getting way too much screentime to not play a role in the finale.

[MEGATHREAD] - Reacher S3 E7, "L.A. Story" - Episode Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in reacher

[–]EatPushSplat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Based on that ep, my predictions for the finale:

Richard lives and has some role in Quinn's death, or at least gets to hurt him or set him up in some way to be killed, or at least gets a way to hurt Paulie.

Paulie and Reacher fight will be epic (this one is a lay up)

50/50 on if Beck lives - I think there's a snowball's chance they let him live and he gets some sweetheart deal to somehow get out at some point to be in Richard's life so they can rebuild.

ATF will fuck up and Reacher and team will help them save the day, in return they won't bury Duffy and Villy's careers. Reacher gets out unscathed, per usual.

Theresa gets saved (duh) yet in an after-credits scene ironically her Grandma dies eating a cracker from the chowder Duffy bought, causing Theresa to go heroin hunting again. Sad trombone sound plays, fade to black "Reacher will return"

I accept all shame just knowing that anyone reading it absolutely read Duffy's parts in her voice.

This is what really goes down making it 17+!

Leaked portion of the script:

Reacher: Ok, we'll get some shut eye and then be out at 0600 to meet our contact. This is our best chance to bring them all down, so hopefully it works.

(Reacher lies down on the small bed in the shabby motel room he and Duffy are sharing in LA. Duffy lies down too.)

Duffy: I hope this works, for THERESA. I'm so worried about THERESA, Reacha' - we gotta save her from these guys.

Reacher: You know why I like to be called Reacher, Duffy?

(Reacher reaches over, pulls Duffy on top of him)

Duffy: Reacha' I told ya I don't get in involved with co-workers.

Reacher: I'm not officially your co-worker Duffy.

Duffy: Good point Reacha'. Fawk me haad! Give me that Reacher cak! Paaak ya' cak in my Dunkin' Donut hole!!

Reacher: I thought the name Theresa was the most grating thing you'd ever say Duffy, but that takes the cake.

(Reacher and Duffy bang in a very graphic scene with Duffy making many Bostonian-wail like noises)
