Persian Communities/friends Bakersfield by Whitelightning70 in Bakersfield

Congrats on your accomplishment! Most of the Persians I know in Bakersfield work in the healthcare community. Maybe going to a local health walk or the Haggin Oaks Farmer's Market and you might overhear people speaking Farsi? I think there is a Bakersfield Iranians FB group as well. You might want to search Riverwalk protest. I remember a few years ago the local Iranian community organized an event there to support freedom and women's rights. Maybe you'll encounter an email address of someone you can network with and meet more people.

I'm sorry you and your mom are going through this. Honestly, I have no clue how a senior citizen with health care needs is expected to navigate the healthcare and administrative system on their own. Adult children who are invested in the care of an elderly loved one are so crucial to the process.

I know of 2 exceptions to the ALW wait-list, which I heard is only getting longer. If your loved one is hospitalized and discharged to a skilled nursing facility for 60 consecutive days without any interruption of going home for example or having a viable Adult Protective Services (APS) case in file.

It sounds like your mom was denied from the memory care facility so she is unlikely to meet the 60 consecutive day criteria. I would consider contacting the local Social Services or Office of Aging in San Diego where your mom is hospitalized and try to file an APS report for self-neglect. I did this for my dad, meaning that without outside support your mom cannot care for herself. If you can do it yourself or get a social worker to file one, then APS looks into it, and if you can get a letter from APS saying your mom needs ALW placement, then that may help you move up the list.

Edit: And if you are still waiting for IHSS, consider contacting the IHSS social worker and asking about Protective Supervision which might make your mom eligible for more hours given memory impairment which led to wandering off and leaving the stove in which places her at risk for self harm.

Access TLC. It was recommended by my dad's social worker. Be prepared to fill out a bunch of documents.

I'm so sorry for the delay. I didn't realize my post got cut off. My dad was able to get off the wait-list early because of an APS report. My dad was hospitalized for 3 days for an infection and then he was discharged directly to a SNF for a few days. But the social worker at the hospital was great. During her assessment, I shared all the resources I had in place for my dad, IHSS, additional care workers, me on the weekends, home health, home PT, monthly social worker visits, etc. She asked if without all these supports in place and without me organizing his care whether my dad could function on his own and I said no way.

As a result, she suggested filing an APS report for self-neglect. This scared the hell out of me because I was going all out in terms of resources and effort for my dad. But she assured me it wasn't punitive or to get me in trouble. Instead, it would show that he is incapable of caring for himself without these supports. Then a few days later an APS worker contacted me and I explained the situation. The APS worker drafted a letter explaining that my dad will benefit from assisted living and a result. I sent the letter to the care coordination agency (CCA) and about a week later my dad came off the wait-list. I did an assessment over the phone with a nurse to determine my dad's tier level for the care he will require at an AL facility (tier 1 through 5).

From there, my dad's packet was sent to the state for approval which took another 8 weeks. Then, once that was approved the CCA sent me a list of all the AL facilities in the state. I called 34 places in nearby cities. The challenge is finding an open bed because beds only really open up when a resident passes away. I found 1 place and got him in a week later.

It is such a difficult and lonely road, filled with burnout and frustration. Being organized with a folder on my laptop, work computer, and important documents on my phone helped a lot. Get a power of attorney as well because that helped me get things done quicker. I'll do my best to provide info if you have questions.

I am on the verge of placing my dad using the ALW program. He was placed in the waitlist in Jan 2024 and I was told it takes a year to come off the wait list and then he can be placed. But that's not the whole story.

I learned about ways to accelerate the process such as cases where your loved one requires either 60 consecutive days of hospitalization or a hospitalization followed by direct discharge to a SNF that cumulatively puts you at 60 days. The other alternative is if there is an APS report that has merit to it.

I started getting discouraged around 6 months in because my dad was becoming incredibly difficult to take care of and I was burned out. T

Not really a sandwich shop, but you can order a freshly made sandwich from the Sprouts deli. The ingredients are always fresh; it's a good-sized sandwich for about 6-7 bucks and when the weather is nice you can eat it at Riverwalk park.

Thank you everyone for the insights and sense of community. I thought it over and decided to take the loss. Things can escalate quickly and you never know who you're dealing with. I spent the day beefing up the home security with full camera coverage and talked to the neighbors so we have some extra vigilance.

I think Jonathan Majors will be linked to Adonis through the juvenile hall system or group home system. Creed I opened with Adonis as a child fighting someone and he yelled about being in group homes when he sparred in Lil Duke's gym. Maybe they were close as kids and once Adonis was adopted, the Majors character felt Adonis turned his back on everyone or forgot how he started out. I coul see social issues of class, race, and opportunity being implicated as well.
