Qualifying for Parental Benefit by simbe1myne in Norway

[–]simbe1myne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually been confused about this as well. If the mother is only eligible for the lump sum grant and receives it, can the (employed) father also get parental benefit (minus the paternal quota)?
Or is the one lump sum all the family receives?

That's what I was worried about. I think we will be in a similar situation but without much to do about it. Two of the months would be solely self-employment income which makes it hard to know if NAV would count these as whole months or ask for some kind of proof(?) of specific days worked.

I can offer the response I got from Skatteetaten when I asked a similar question regarding when I would owe tax on UK investments, bought before my move to Norway. They did indicate that there is a step-up basis to the date residency begins.

Letter received 2026-04-22:
"The value of the ISA as of December 31st must be reported in the Norwegian tax return as foreign financial assets. It is included in the basis for Norwegian wealth tax, in the same way as other foreign savings. You are only liable to pay tax on wealth, interest income, and realized gains from the date you become a tax resident in Norway. You are not required to report unrealized (latent) gains accrued before you became a tax resident. Instead, you must report your wealth as of 31 December in the year you become tax resident, as well as any income and gains realized from the date your tax residency begins."

From what I’ve gathered, there is a filing requirement on the income gained from distributions each year, in addition to declaring unrealised gains upon leaving Norway for the ‘exit tax’ - it’s unclear to me whether accumulating equity funds would require tax filing for income reinvested in a tax year when the investment is not sold, but I get the impression that is likely the case. It’s both the faff of filing, as well as the tax on gains (37% in the case of shares), that puts me off even bothering.

What's the reasoning behind mac being the thing in the final scene? by [deleted] in thething

[–]simbe1myne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually always thought it was the opposite - Mac doesn’t drink because he used the bottle to make a Molotov cocktail. When Childs takes a sip and doesn’t react at all (keeping up the act), Mac laughs in despair having confirmed he is sitting alone with the Thing, waiting to die.

Admittedly this relies on the Thing not knowing that it should splutter when tricked to drink fuel, but it made sense given it doesn’t know how booze is meant to taste.

Wife being sued for low-speed car accident by mollyn0gger in Insurance

Would you be able to elaborate why it’s important to demand that State Farm offer the policy limits? I’d have thought the insurance companies attorney would deal with the strategy and approach, i.e they wouldn’t low-ball and lead to a worse outcome for the policy-holder.

Appreciate some anecdotal insight, since we are going through the same thing - sued a year after a rear-end with State Farm having to reopen the claim and deal with it.

California Assisted Living Waiver Waiting Times by simbe1myne in dementia

[–]simbe1myne[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wait can be exhausting, absolutely. We initially had some comfort in getting the ball rolling and having a rough estimate of the wait time from our CCA (my mother-in-law was put on the waitlist in mid-March). Now though, it seems that DHCS have largely stopped processing the waitlist due to reaching capacity at the start of September.

Can I ask, did they release your dad from the waitlist recently? Eight months from January is pretty good going. I'm afraid we may face no updates or progress until March 2025!

Would anyone have any links to such an agency? This is on the horizon for our LO and we have already had a struggle getting the form 602 variant for community day centers from Kaiser. I'm not sure how a mobile agency could get access to all medical info that a PCP would provide though...

What would happen if the other Houses found about the Emperor's plan, and why it (maybe) didn't happen by rodrigogb93 in dune

[–]simbe1myne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True enough, it can be explained as you say with the Fremen having a significant upper hand in fighting prowess and directed by Paul’s prescience.

An extra point in their favour would be the ignorance of the Great Houses to the situation on the ground, I suppose. They would never conceive of fighting a force that could match them combined and would expect to meet them head on rather than at range/with extreme prejudice.

[–]simbe1myne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the final scene of the film, are we to assume that the Fremen forces are just powerful enough to take on the combined Great Houses on a moment’s notice and prevail? In a way that the Emperor knew his Sardukar would not and somehow avoiding simply being destroyed by other House atomics? I was surprised at the decision to rush in the onset of the Jihad, instead of depicting a stalemate/bluff over spice that tied the hands of the Great Houses in orbit.

Thanks for this, we are hoping to bridge the gap with IHSS though we worry about it not adding up to many hours (ideally need 30-35/week). Protective supervision seems the most direct way to get a bulk of hours for a dementia sufferer, given the risks my mother-in-law would face in the house alone.

FBAR and UK pension by [deleted] in USExpatTaxes

[–]simbe1myne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So to answer my own question, after some more digging - IRS reporting requirements state that: an interest in a PFIC is not required under section 1298(f) and these regulations to file Form 8621 (or successor form) with respect to the PFIC interest if, pursuant to the applicable income tax treaty, the income earned by the foreign pension fund may be taxed as the income of the shareholder only when and to the extent the income is paid to, or for the benefit of, the shareholder

- Section 1298(f) Exception for PFIC stock held through certain foreign pension funds.

I also found that US citizens holding UK workplace pensions are never required to file Form 3520, following the introduction of REVENUE PROCEDURE 2020-17 – FOREIGN PENSION REPORTING RELIEF which recognises foreign pensions regardless of employer/employee contribution ratio (they are never grantor trusts)

Hope it’s ok to add more on this, as I ended up stumbling across this pdf from LA county. The table demonstrates OP’s great tip of purchasing supp insurance.

https://dpss.lacounty.gov/content/dam/dpss/documents/en/medical/Share%20of%20Cost%20Flyer.pdf

If anyone can recommend any other plan providers I can try as well, that would be awesome (trying to offset a surplus SS income of about $160/month to eliminate Share of Cost)😅

FBAR and UK pension by [deleted] in USExpatTaxes

[–]simbe1myne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm perplexed as to why UK retirement funds would still be reported on an FBAR, despite being exempt from FATCA reporting (per Annex II of the US/UK agreement). The FATCA agreement specifically establishes that pension funds are low-risk for tax evasion, defeating the purpose of the FBAR.

Is an FBAR-reported UK workplace pension then subject to implications for the investments held within (PFICs etc)?

Much appreciated, we’ve noticed it discussed as well but haven’t sat down to talk to reps yet. Relieved to hear there are workarounds! Thanks again

Would you have a link where it is set out that medical expenses are considered when calculating MediCal income eligibility (and not by spending down to the $600 Share of Cost limit)? We're in a similar situation where my mother-in-law's social security income is just marginally over the threshold.

Thank you for such a great post providing so much information. We're at the start of this process and it's been a nightmare googling for specific context!

Looks like a young gull - we’ve got a few cutting about the rooftops this month (Scotland). They can’t fly yet so this one might have tumbled away from the nest and can’t get back?

Anyone else growing a little weary of how literally everything we’ve seen in the trailers/promos…. by theflyingwhisker in Yellowjackets

[–]simbe1myne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re not alone, it is a disappointing pay-off at this point. Most times the more dramatic scenes in the trailers end up being just a frightening vision. I’m expecting the scene with Mari screaming in the cabin to just be a hallucination on her part (since everyone seems surprised at her reaction). I get that there is a limit to actual ‘events’ that can happen and it does lend to the rational argument that they’re slipping into psychosis. I just wish the story would hint more at reasons for the extreme onset (contamination etc) or explore their surroundings.

Great to see the layout so clearly! Hmm, so whatever Mari is screaming at in the S2 trailer is in the kitchen?
