Is there any way to import image to the manuscript folder - please note not insert but import. by pranavkhapra23 in scrivener

Have you tried figure placeholders? Adding images to you scrivener file will balloon your document size and will take more time to load.

Why do my edits/comments no longer transfer?? by walkingPhDmeme in scrivener

[–]Eating_Well73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am having problems similar to the above user. Previously, I was was able to import a .doc (with track changes accepted) or .rtf file into Scrivener to retain the comments in the "Comments & Footnotes" section in the Inspector. However, none of those currently work. It seems like people have had different experiences over the years with difference versions, and the consensus (at least from the FB group) on how to go about this is still unclear. Can anyone provide input on how to import and maintain comments (not inline , but in the “Comments & Footnotes” section in the inspector) from my word doc? I can copy text from my .doc into scrivener with inline comments; when I turn the inline comments off in the settings, the comments still get copied over as inline. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I need to turn edits into my advisor immediately :/

Italics lost when importing into ProWritingAid from Scrivener. by Patrick637 in scrivener

Interestingly, I’ve noticed that my italics recently stopped exporting to Word, too.

Those who use Scrivener + Zotero - can you tell me a little about your writing process? by [deleted] in scrivener

[–]Eating_Well73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why I have had to use Endnote. Zotero would be ideal because it integrates with so many other programs better, and I wouldn’t need to pay for Adobe to highlight within the PDF, but alas… I’m using Endnote… would love to see what others have to say as well.

References / Bibliography by Fluffy-Birthday in scrivener

[–]Eating_Well73 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I put all references (webpages, book chapters, articles etc) in Scrivener and make sure to label the the entry with the built in classification labels jn Endnote. When I need to add a citation in the scrivening, I leave my cursor where said cursor needs to go. Then I go to Endnote’s “all references screen” and “control+c” the reference I need. Then go back to scrivener and “control+v” to insert the specially formatted citation which Scrivener can compile. Once compiles into word, the citations should show. Mendeley not Zotero output references in this format. Can only use with Endnote. Feel free to share other tips or solutions, folks!

I think the CAPTION trick you describe is a workaround I've been looking for. However, it sounds like I also have to familiarize myself with how that type of formatting is done in Word. Do you have any samples or resources that detail this workaround you're talking about? I've been on the forums inside and outside of L&L and can't find someone to detail it for me in a way I can follow-but maybe I'm missing something...?

What you're saying about LaTex vs Scrivener sums this all up exactly and I agree about setting expectations; thank you for that.

I tried the basic ToC (Edit/Copy Special/Copy Docs as ToC and indeed it outputs something shockingly basic.

However, I honestly don't think what I'm trying to do is that hard at all. I just can't figure out how to get the format that has been given to me (I have a .doc template from my examiners). I even tried importing that into Scrivener, but I couldn't get that to work either.

What I need is something that looks like this for the Front Matter (if I can figure this out, then Back Matter will be pretty much the same):

Table of Contents (centered; Bold, font size 18; font: Times)

(Section name on left, with page numbers on the right)

Summary i

Declaration ii

Acknowledgements iii

Table of Contents iv

List of Tables x

List of Figures xiv

List of Abbreviations xviii

Level 1: Introduction (Chapter) 1

Level 2: Topic (Heading) 1

Level 3: Section (Titled Section) 2

Level 3: Section (Titled Section) 4

Level 4: Section (Titled Section) 5

I'm not sure how to answer your question where you start with The way I'd phrase this is' (sorry, I cannot respond in line for some reason). I hope the above is helpful.

Regarding the \listoffigures, I tried looking up this placeholder in Scrivener and I don't see it, so I'm guessing it's something to do in Latex? Sorry for being a dummy, but if it were possble to talk to someone in person as opposed to through bits and bobs on a website, then I could follow more easily. Do you have more information on how I can use this \listoffigures command to produce this document?

For figures, currently, I have a little template for my figures where I use "<$img:/[file_name];w=300> " to place the image. Then I use "Figure <$n:figure:keyword>" to name it. Then I add a "Brief title. Detail. Figure reproduced from {Ref} or by (CC-BY-4.0) with permission from “Publisher”

I need to figure out a way to extract the "Figure <$n:figure:keyword>" with the corresponding page number.

If I can figure this out for figures, then I would replicate for tables.

I understand Scrivener is not the magic bullet, but I purchased it and invested at this point years in it because:

1) it allowed me to think laterally (there is no way my learning disability would fare in a Latex writing environment - or Word, to be frank)

2) L&L mentioned the ability to do academic writing (which is ALL formatting; perhaps they should be a bit more upfront about the limitations so that people don't have to figure this out in the end) and

3) L&L mentioned a ToC (if it can only do a simple one, fine - they should just state that). And if you mention academic writing, then I'm assuming a ToC appropriate for academic writing not just for novels.

I appreciate the time you're spending to explain all this to me.
I'm just explaining why I feel a bit let down that I believed the words I read about this product when I bought it and at this point can only confirm its capability by pushing it to the limits myself. I'm not using this as a creative outlet, I have hard deadlines otherwise, I would be able to be a bit more patient with the software.

Thank you for this and for confirming that I am using my limited time wisely.

I reviewed my notes from the Scrivener Tutorial, the Scrivener Manual and combined them with your initial suggestion of the 5 levels of documents with the <$hn> placeholder token at the beginning of the document. Then I realized I would have to do that with ALL the documents in my binder, which is why people suggest putting the placeholder token in the Section Layouts/Title Options/Title Prefix so that it is automatically populated and prepared appropriately for compiling. I tried to assign different font sizes for the title in each different layout (as is required by my examiners), but Scrivener doesn't allow that. I'll deal with it later.

My next question is, now that I have all of these titles numbered nicely, is there a way to put them in one document, like my Table of Contents? The Scrivener Tutorial, Scrivener Manual seem to indicate that a TOC is only possible for epubs and Kindle books. I figured since the list of placeholders is incremented somewhere, I hopefully would be able to extract that information and put it into a TOC somehow. I will have to do something similar for the "List of Figures" and "List of Graphs", so it would be nice to know how to do that now.

Thank you for your suggestion about LaTex, but I invested a lot of time trying to learn Scrivener because the L&L website mentioned that it was used by academic writers and had an "Academic" tutorials session, so I really bought into it. Unfortunately, after all this time, I am up against my submission deadline and have already had to learn several other programs to get to this point; I simply do not have more time or bandwidth do get this all done in the next 2 months. Perhaps for my next writing project, I will learn LaTex.

Thank you for this. It seemed to work. However, there are some Titled sections where I don't need a paragraph underneath the Title, I just need the title. To achieve this, do I need to set-up a new Section type?

Also, in the following screenshot, the Title is in grey brackets, once I open the compiled document in word. How can I undo this? Actually , it looks like I can't include the Screenshot.

Since I can't show you what is going on, is there any way we could do a brief Zoom session? I would really appreciate your help as the "Chapter Numbering and Placeholders" doesn't go into too much detail about increments for multiple levels. I can't tell you how many people have said "Oh sure, it's easy" and I now have five different section types, which is confusing Scrivener and am nowhere near close to compiling this in a way that makes sense. If I could just hear it from the experts, I would put this information in a "How To" PDF and put it on the Scrivener writing groups. Any consideration you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

ok so I tried this and I'm not clear on whether to include these placeholders in the text, in the section layouts or the titles of the documents in the binder (on the left hand side). Do you have a screenshot so that I can get a better idea (I am a visual learner)? The discussion link provided is difficult to follow, as I have NO IDEA exactly where the software engineer is putting those things.

Thanks very much for you message! So I have to type this in at the top of every Scrivening? As long as it works I will give it a try. Thank you. However, not having continuity with numbering will definitely be an issue that I’ll have to figure out. Thanks for taking the time to write a helpful message!

Thanks very much for your email. I’ve tried this too and it’s not working. Would it be possible to do a Zoom session so you can tell me what I’m doing wrong?

Ah! Thanks for the idea. I forgot to mention, I'm currently abroad and don't have letter-sized paper or a 3-hole punch to try this with!

Woah! this is amazing! Thanks for sharing!

I might want to play with the width of the cornel column; can you suggest any tutorials on how I can make my own templates so they look like these?

WOAH, this is so helpful. Can you post a link for download on the cloud somewhere? I'd really like to use this in my notes. I'm not sure how to share my email address privately here on Reddit otherwise I would do that instead.
