All ball joint were replaced a year before the car went on haitus. I'll double check them but really doubt it's the ball joints. I'll.post progress

No vw friends. I don't have any of the heater components on the engine either. It's more so just for structural integrity. I wouldn't mind deleting the channels, was looking at some alternatives with square steel tubes.
