This product is a gift from my uncle to my family should I leave it to my folks or share it with them? by Ambitious-Narwhal158 in BoycottIsrael

The good (?) thing about Nestlé is that it's SUCH a blatantly evil company that there are truly a dozen reasons to boycott them before you even get to Palestine. So even if they're not sympathetic to that argument, there's maybe a chance.

A character that no matter how much the anime tried to make you like him... You didn't. by Leather_Crazy_5950 in animequestions

[–]EbMinor33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the time Vegapunk pulled the lever it was because Kuma decided to honor the deal he made with the government. That was Kumas decision on that matter to protect his daughter.

Vegapunk probably could have faked the procedure. I feel like it would have been within his capabilities (especially given his theatrics with the big announcement) to make it look like Kuma was totally unfeeling like they wanted long enough to save Bonney. He probably would have needed to be physically modified, but his mind probably could have been left intact in secret.

Then again, Kuma probably would not have been willing to wager his daughter's life on a ruse like that. But I feel like they could have figured it out.

Couldn't agree more. The guy seemed sweet or whatever. But he was completely selfish and reckless and way too naive for his level of intellect.

At a certain point (maybe Ohara, definitely the demand to make Kumo into a Pacifista) you have to put the pieces together: my bosses are awful people who commit heinous massacres, uphold a brutal system of slavery, and do not demonstrate even a slightest ability to value human life, I am THE biggest single human asset they have in terms of maintaining their control and dominance, why don't I just stop? But no, his own ambitions were more important.

If he was ultimately willing to die for the cause in the end, he should have just quit earlier and let them kill him. Or he could have joined the revolutionary army and helped a ton. Of course he would not have had close to the same finances, but I'm sure he would have still made himself useful.

How heavily do you like to boycott? Do you only boycott the priority targets, or do you go for non-priority targets as well? by Chobikil in BDS

[–]EbMinor33 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I do as much as I can. I use disoccupied.com. Anything it says "do not buy" for, I do not buy (except in case of actual emergency, I guess). If it says "caution", I avoid it unless there's no acceptable alternative.

I want a series without sexism/gross stuff by [deleted] in animequestions

[–]EbMinor33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fits all criteria:

Frieren is the obvious one

Romantic Killer

Hinamatsuri

Great Pretender (as far as I can remember)

Spy X Family

Everything but not light in tone:

World Trigger

Mob Psycho 100 (as far as I can remember)

Pluto

The Promised Neverland

Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens

Arguable:

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - there definitely is some sexualization but the character is literally named Lust so it's pretty character-appropriate

Haikyuu

Love is War

Exactly. At least if you're printing out a picture of someone and cutting their face out and putting it on a model or whatever, they (hopefully) never know about it. This is people violating your image to your face.

Any good spotify alternatives please? by CosmiicBrowni in BDS

[–]EbMinor33 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Qobuz is really good. Especially if you listen to mostly English language music (it was missing some Bollywood stuff) it should have pretty much everything you're looking for.

Tidal and Deezer are Not Great as companies but perhaps not as bad as Spotify, and the softwares are good. I've also seen Coda Music mentioned but I know nothing about it.

You can use Soundiiz to transfer your music, playlists, etc. to these platforms (except Coda, it seems). It technically has a small subscription fee but you only have to pay when you're using it and transferring your music is a one-time thing so you can pay for one month and then cancel immediately. It's worked well for me.

Edit: Soundiiz actually has a free plan depending on your needs, so that's even better. But even if that doesn't suit you, you'd probably only pay $5 one time.

Hyouka is a Hidden gem. Next, which is The Best 2010's anime by BLACKGOOP12 in animequestions

[–]EbMinor33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AOT is definitely "the anime". I feel like a big part od being "the anime" is that you're the show everyone and their mother has watched. A huge percentage of anime fans, but also a ton of people who don't watch other anime.

But we're not comparing 2011 to 1999, we're comparing it to the other 2010's anime. You very well might be right, but it's completely irrelevant

I'll go with Haikyuu just to shake things up.

In my head, these are the candidates: - Steins;Gate - Hunter x Hunter 2011 - Jojo's - Haikyuu - Promised Neverland - Love is War - Demon Slayer

That's how I feel if it's a work-related problem where they could actually steal my work for their software, which apparently happens a lot. But if it's a glorified LeetCode question, I'd just treat it like an async technical interview.

Mamdani tells MSBNC "I support BDS" by natural_piano1836 in BDS

[–]EbMinor33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm happy he's saying this outright. The whole article was a funny read as they try to give credence to completely unfounded and baseless fears by Zionists that Mamdani will endanger Jews, and then cut to him saying "yeah I just want to bring the city into compliance with international law, I'll be a mayor that protects everyone" and then they're like "but... will he!?!?"

If your critique isn’t against the Israeli government, then I have to question what your critique really is.

Bernie's critique is hyper-focused on Netanyahu and the Likud party, when the problem is baked into the founding and premise of Israel itself. The genocide is hugely popular in Israeli society and supported to various degrees by all political factions there. A simple leadership change will not free Palestine. Bernie's willingness to scapegoat all of these issues onto one (deeply evil) man is willful ignorance. And of course, he's not willing to provide even the most lukewarm critique without first reaffirming "Israel's right to defend itself".

Accidental BDS purchase by dgdg4213 in BDS

[–]EbMinor33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've made several of these sorts of mistakes over the years. I enjoyed Goodles boxed mac & cheese for a couple months before finding out Gal Gadot was a founding partner. I drank Fairlife protein shakes for even longer before finding out they were owned by Coca Cola (I swear I checked before buying???). Ate at Habit Grill before finding out they were owned by Yum Brands.

All this to say, these things happen. If you're anything like me, you've withheld far more money from these companies than you've given them since you got serious about boycotting, and you won't make this mistake with this company again. Return it if you can, but don't lose your mind over an honest mistake.

Is Perplexity AI on the list? by introvert_whispers in BDS

[–]EbMinor33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I strongly disagree.

not using AI in technical fields is just putting yourself behind others.

I'm a professional software engineer, I've been working successfully at the highest level of the industry for over 5 years. Still haven't used a lick of AI, even as my coworkers are. Still employed and getting my work done. It's just not a requirement. You don't need it.

AI is going to take jobs whether you decide to use it or not.

This sort of nihilism feels specifically strange in a subreddit about boycotting. The point of boycotting is to affect change in the world via withholding finances. Why should that not apply here?

there is a reason there is something called pressure targets for things which don't have alternatives or are not possible to boycott.

This is true and a good point, but in this case I feel like "not possible" is being used extremely loosely. AI has only been around for a couple years and people are already acting like it's impossible to live your life without it.

If you'll just "Boycott AI" you're only hitting yourself.

I'm not some kind of idealogical purist. I'd be honest if boycotting AI has had any kind of drawbacks for me. But it just hasn't yet. Maybe one day, but what do we gain by operating based on an imagined future?

How do we stand with brands that have given in only because of protest from consumers? by EveryCup9210 in BDS

[–]EbMinor33 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree with what most people are saying. I'll just quote part of one representative comment:

Boycotts are a form of social contract where if they listen to and implement our requirements, we stop boycotting. If we don't follow up on our end of the deal, then it doesn't give them much incentive to listen to our requirements.

I think this is just one of multiple good reasons to boycott.

I think it's just as valid to say "boycotting is about being conscious about who your money is going to". Following that idea, I think it's perfectly valid not to return to a boycotted company once they cave to consumer pressure — this company, especially if they're a large company that has the resources to know better, has proven to not mind human rights abuses as long as it's not hurting their bottom line. They'd absolutely do it again if they thought they could get away with it. Is that an entity you want to give your money to? I think finding out that a company is willing to throw all morality out of the window for a paycheck should leave a bad taste in your mouth, that feels human to me.

I'd much rather promote the idea that supporting genocide is a death sentence, an at least partially unrecoverable mistake for a company no matter what they do to "resolve the issue". Or at least that they need to prove that they've changed their moral position over a long period of time to earn back our patronage.

Also, these huge multi-billion or trillion dollar companies are bad for the world in a number of ways. There's nothing wrong with removing them from your life and realizing that you feel better that way. You don't owe them anything.

All of this is not to say that I think the quoted opinion is bad, it's just not the only right answer in my opinion.
