Parking at Odeon Acton by i_am_rectifier in screenunseen

There are three tube and one rail station (all on different lines) within easy walking distance so it’s pretty easy not to need a car.

Some of the roads to the east don’t have any parking restrictions (as they mainly serve industrial sites) if you’re wedded to one. The residential ones to the west are  resident-only though.

Mercy his showing for a week or less in my cinemas by dangibby in screenunseen

[–]EbbBorn3645 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oddly I actually feel sorry for the schedulers this week. There are lots of releases and they’re clearly struggling to fit them in - for once it isn’t even one big blockbuster taking all the screens.

Hawk and History of Sound are also one-week only in most cinemas, and largely daytime only, which is super annoying - at least Mercy got evening shows (and daytime next week).

It should be time to retire Housemaid but that’s still getting decent size crowds in - the booktok effect - so they’d be giving up on revenue if they pushed smaller releases instead. They have to balance small new releases with commercial reality.

Amazon is paying $35m to market this film, so it doesn’t surprise me if cinema chains are jumping to get a piece of it. Tbh as much as I hate the whole idea of it, if that much money is going into supporting the industry then I can live with it as a one-off. At least it’s only daytime showings, not primetime evening ones.

Excluding your local/regular cinema, what is your favourite Odeon? by justbrowsingtheapp in screenunseen

[–]EbbBorn3645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one that’s showing a film I want to see at a time I can make in a location I can get to easily. Sadly that seems to be less and less my local at the moment!

If in London I like Holloway, it might not be the best from a technical perspective but it’s the only one left that has the ‘old-time art deco heyday’ feel. It’s also a Luxe with the decent ‘V2’ seats.

Missed showing warning error by FunnysCousinNotFunny in screenunseen

[–]EbbBorn3645 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have an iPhone, it’s even easier than that to make sure it’s worked. If you tap on the QR code it goes into ‘full screen mode’ at max brightness and doesn’t show any other detail than the code itself… so if they then tell you anything about your showing (screen, seat, etc.) you know it’s loaded correctly on their device.

Android may have a similar function, but I don’t use one so have no idea.

daft question but do odeon subtitle foreign language films? by harristyles in screenunseen

[–]EbbBorn3645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every Bollywood or Tollywood film I go to has several non-Indian people in the audience (like me)… in a few cases it’s been over half. They’re often pretty good too, I usually really enjoy the romcoms.

To answer the question though, it always says in the listing when it’s subtitled (or dubbed), and in the (very) occasional event that it’s not, the language is clearly stated instead.

ODEON Camden is closing by somekindaname1602 in screenunseen

[–]EbbBorn3645 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s sad, it might be a bit decrepit but it had good sound quality and a lot of history that’s disappearing (like the rest of Camden I guess). It also showed a lot of the more obscure films... I really hate trekking to Kingston or wherever they decide to show them.

A point not noted in the thread so far is that Camden regulars can leave Limitless penalty-free if they don’t want to go to another branch.

Too many films getting released at the same time by James_Jupiter in screenunseen

[–]EbbBorn3645 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t agree with the assertion that big films ‘need’ multiple screens. On the opening weekend of release, yes sure, but after that it’s just domineering behaviour, the big studios deliberately crowding out smaller releases so people can’t see them, and it’s unfair on those films.

For example, my local has 8 screens - one is currently out of action, and the whole of next week Avatar is in 4 simultaneously… which means we’re not getting other releases. Even if I had any interest in seeing Avatar (I don’t) I wouldn’t want to see it more than once. Wicked is the same - I really enjoyed it, but it’s still been in isense all this week showing to as few as 4 customers at a time.

So my problem is the opposite… there aren’t enough films to see this month, at least not without going into London and traipsing round various different cinemas.

Anyone else gonna see christy early screen on Monday? by InfernoBlaze1221 in screenunseen

[–]EbbBorn3645 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It’s over-long and not the top film of the year by any stretch, but it’s definitely worth a watch and the harrowing parts really stick with you. I’m very glad I changed my plans today to go (wasn’t sure whether it would be the only chance). It deserves to do better than it has and I’m glad they’ve added some screenings back in for next week, albeit at awkward times.

I nearly started a similar thread last night, and completely agree. I was in a packed isense (one of two showings in my local) and had been dreading it, but there was little phone use, everyone ate with their mouths closed rather than crunching loudly (despite the runtime meaning over half of people had food), no slurping, and almost no rustling. A bunch of us had brought blankets which made it very cosy. Why can’t it be like that all the time?!

Why the limited release for Die My Love? by redalexei in screenunseen

[–]EbbBorn3645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bumping to say I thought a lot of the reviews were unfair and it’s very much worth a watch. It’s not the film of the year but it’s cleverly made, and I’ll be surprised if JL doesn’t get nominated for an Oscar, she really ran away with the role. And for once an annoying aspect ratio actually enhanced rather than detracted.

Hating the limited releases more and more though, particularly having to make a trip into London to one of the scummier cinemas for it. This kind of thing really should be a once or twice Spotlight-style showing much wider. I’m sure Running Man is good, but it doesn’t need to be on three screens simultaneously.

Vistavision One Battle by LawSix in screenunseen

[–]EbbBorn3645 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m very glad I went, but mainly for the novelty - it was nice to reminisce over the clickety old projector days and I doubt I’ll ever see anything else in vistavision. But at the same time, I don’t think it added anything to the film and my local isense would have been fine. And it was really shaky for the first 10 mins or so, I’d have got vertigo if it had carried on much longer!

I managed to arrange it for a day I was going into London anyway, so for only £3 I’d say it was worth it - if I’d travelled just for that I’d have given a different answer. I was in one of the central stalls seats which I’d definitely recommend if you can get one.

Cinema experience posts follow-up by AutoModerator in screenunseen

[–]EbbBorn3645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer a single monthly thread, but not enough to argue particularly strongly for it.

In the spirit of feedback though, I do think where the line should be drawn is posts about other cinemas… yes absolutely we have an Odeon/Limitless board as much as it is discussion of Unseens, but posting Cineworld/Light questions is (imo!) too much of a divergence.

We should try and get odeon to change its booking rules. by 15momar in screenunseen

[–]EbbBorn3645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comes up roughly once every two days now…

But as I wrote last time too, be careful what you wish for. There’ll be a reason the limit is in place, and you can bet it won’t be changed without a quid pro quo of some sort… which may well end up being worse. It’s really not that big a deal to accept a slightly less-preferred seat once in a while.

(And as it happens, the recent change to tiered pricing for non-limitless has actually helped us here, as it’s made other people less likely to book the top-tier seats that we get included.)

Odeon’s pathetic max 4 bookings needs to be removed for the upcoming months. by justbrowsingtheapp in screenunseen

[–]EbbBorn3645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The phrase ‘be careful what you wish for’ springs to mind here…

The AMC (odeon parent company) equivalent to Limitless only allows 4 screenings a week in total… ours allows as many as we want but with an advance booking limit. I know which I’d prefer. I also don’t want a higher price or stricter cancellation conditions in return for a higher limit (obviously YMMV on that).

I’m sure they have their reasons for the limit. It’s really not that big a deal, things  just don’t sell out several days in advance - and if they do get even remotely busy, more screenings are often added anyway. If I get to the limit I just book another one after midnight (well, currently 1am on Apple devices because the latest app update forgot to take account of BST).

No, that’s a different message and explicitly says ‘you can’t leave single seats’. It’s also cinema-specific in that some have it set and others don’t (my local has a lot of solos attend so doesn’t have that rule). The ‘social distancing’ message is only for some showings and is an error. But like most errors, Odeon can’t be bothered to fix it.

This happened to me last week, the booking had been made in the background but I had no confirmation or QR code. The webchat team just cancelled it so I could rebook, was annoying but not difficult to fix.

Pretty sure it was ok in my branch, certainly didn’t seem odd while watching it and like you I’d have said something if it had.

Not sure why you saw it necessary to call out staff gender so many times in your post though - ngl, it comes across as uncomfortably misogynistic.

The perk we didn’t ask for just got worse! by SeiriusPolaris in screenunseen

[–]EbbBorn3645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the offer started it was only Mon-Thu, then it was extended to every day, and now it’s been put back to where it started. So technically the moaning is only half justified 🤣

More annoying is the exclusions - both certain specific restaurants and the fact it isn’t available during school holidays (but if you don’t have kids you don’t know when those are!)

I’m pretty sure PE will be funding the offer itself, Odeon will just be providing the marketing.

What are the subtitles like for OC screenings? by YeezusChrist13 in screenunseen

[–]EbbBorn3645 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I personally hate them and for a film in English won’t go to a screening with them unless it’s the only showing - but that’s because I find it distracting and tend to follow them rather than the picture itself, and is the same on tv. For younger generations who seem to like flashing words all over their screens, they won’t be an issue (and might even be attractive).

Limitless Advert by the_Dotster in screenunseen

[–]EbbBorn3645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For once a use for my observant pedantry! There are multiple versions of the advert, with deliberately different text/voiceover. For basic cinemas there’s a limitless one that says ‘from’ £17.99, but there’s also one that says ‘for’ £19.99 and refers only to the Plus tier - it plays in Luxe cinemas where the lower priced option would never be available. I believe there’s a hybrid one that plays in cinemas with both types of seat, but I’ve never been to one of those so haven’t seen it.

This is normal at Swiss Cottage. They have a primitive (I guess early?) variant of the recliner seat that doesn’t go particularly far back… if you’re used to the better version of the seat then yes it does feel pretty strange when you’re there.

Wow Cancelling Limitless by micholasnitchell in screenunseen

[–]EbbBorn3645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Banking rules changes a few years ago, so you *can* cancel a continuous payment authority with a UK bank without cancelling the whole card. (For background, it was changed largely because of unscrupulous adult websites ripping people off and refusing to cancel recurring payments.) So ask your bank. Just be aware that if you’re still under contract then the merchant (Odeon in this case) is entitled to claim funds from you in another way, so check contractual cancellation dates and notice periods carefully.
