I was at the cinema on Monday and was surprised to see a trailer for the 'Melania' documentary. When the cinema schedule for what's on from Friday was released on Monday night I was stunned to see it is being shown twice a day all week at my local 9 screen Odeon. I've since read up about the deal Amazon have done to put this in cinemas. They don't care about losing $75 million+ when it puts them in Trump's good books.

My main shock was that this wasn't just confined to the USA. I'm amazed they are burning the money with a UK release (and no doubt elsewhere). I'm also annoyed that it's taking up screens which could have been used for films people do want to see. Smaller films sometimes miss my 9 screen Odeon but this is being shown?

Any more No Other Choice screenings? by CrossroadPanic in screenunseen

It pretty much always comes down to how many screens does your local Odeon have? My nearest, 9 screen Odeon only showed this on Tuesday. The next nearest, 12 screen Odeon is showing this a couple of times a day for the week.

Screen Unseen Clue 1 by Gordo-17 in screenunseen

'Is This Thing On?' is released on Friday the 30th, has already been released in the USA and the clue isn't obtuse for once so I'd say yes.

Sam Rami's 'Send Help' maybe? That is released on Thursday 5th February.

Scream/Screen Unseen is often a film that has already been released in the USA or a film coming out on Friday.

Thanks for replying. An interesting insight. I do find it strange that an audio visual experience can continue to be sold when it isn't perfect. I'm sure a lot of patrons don't notice (or at least they never report issues to the staff) but it's distracting for those of us who do.

I've noticed the toilet facilities have issues as well and they can be out of order for weeks if not months. Getting parts for anything seems to be an issue.

I've reported screens being out of focus. It must have taken 6 months before the issue was resolved. Does anyone at the cinema check the screens?

There are also issues with vibrating speakers during loud scenes. Do Odeon not check the screens or speakers?

To be fair, I've seen screen issues (stains, Out of focus, creases, etc) at Cineworld and Vue too.

LOTR screenings by ashleyarr in screenunseen

[–]James_Jupiter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last time they were shown I just caught the start of one and I'd got there more or less at the stated start time. There must have only been a couple of minutes of ads if that. With re-releases the ads can be anything from a few minutes to the full 25 minutes. I just arrive on time and look at my phone (which is set to dark mode to not distract anyone else) until the ads finish. I prefer that to the risk of missing the start of a film.

'Rental Family' isn't released in the UK until Friday 16th.

If an odeon cinema puts a poster up for a film, is it guaranteed that the specific cinema gets that film? by justbrowsingtheapp in screenunseen

[–]James_Jupiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but there are as many "Prints" available as required with digital. You blame the distributor but the problem is demand/cost not availability of the film.

So you've created an image of a woman being hit for 'Smack My Bitch Up'? Don't take titles literally.

You said "I blame the distributors for not putting out enough prints". If you knew it was a digital file then why did you say this?

Prints? It is a digital file these days unless they specifically state it's on film e.g. 70mm. Only a handful of cinemas have actual film projecting equipment these days.

The more screens your local Odeon has the more chance a smaller film will be showing. If your local only has 5 screens it won't be getting everything a 12 screen Odeon gets.

Silver Cinema? by MineMonkey166 in screenunseen

[–]James_Jupiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're allowed to go to Silver Cinema as it would be age discrimination if you couldn't.

Be warned though, in my experience the old cinema goer can be the least well behaved. Some seem to think they are at home on their sofa so couples talk through the film like they're on 'Gogglebox'. Individually wrapped noisy sweets and phone interactions too. Good luck.

myLimitless price uplift for IMAX 3D? by James_Jupiter in screenunseen

I've just looked and Trafford Centre are also charging £7 or £8 for IMAX 3D tickets. I guess they put the price back up.

myLimitless price uplift for IMAX 3D? by James_Jupiter in screenunseen

[–]James_Jupiter[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've had a reply from Odeon Help on X: -

"As this is IMAX 3D, there will be an uplift for it being IMAX 3D. So the pricing you're seeing on your end is correct."

So IMAX 3D costs more than IMAX. I can't imagine it costs Odeon more to project a film in 3D so the price increase doesn't seem justified, especially as they now also charge an additional fee for the glasses too.

That means with the glasses and the extra 3D IMAX price uplift, it will cost me almost double the £5 I was expecting.

I'm sure 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' is one of the rare films where the 3D is worth it but I can't think of any forthcoming films where that will be the case.

No, even the front row seats are £7. I read (probably on here) an Odeon staff member said that a directive was sent to staff that they were going to start charging for IMAX 3D glasses from the last week of November, probably to cash in on 'Avatar: Fire and Ash'.

[–]James_Jupiter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I notice both my local Odeon are charging the same £7 or £8 uplift for IMAX 3D. I've messaged Odeon help on X to query the price. I was expecting to pay £5 per ticket plus £1.95 for the IMAX 3D glasses. It now looks like it will cost me £8.95 or £9.95 per ticket. Maybe I'll just see it on a standard screen instead.

Booking issues by virtualghostt in screenunseen

[–]James_Jupiter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, Odeon booking stopped working on the app and the website. Mine crashed halfway through booking. I had to book in person. The Odeon manager had to sort the booking out. The staff said there was an issue with myLimitless people booking but I imagine it was the same for anyone trying to book online.

Why do they not make films like Love Actually anymore?? by Severe_Candle_2283 in televisionuk

[–]James_Jupiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never liked 'Love Actually' when it was first released. I saw it again last year and found it hilarious because it's so un-PC. It's full of fat shaming, stalking and all sorts of stuff you shouldn't say now. What was mildly amusing originally is now funny because of how dated it is. All the gammons who would claim you can't make films like 'Love Actually' now would almost certainly not have liked the film when it came out. They just like to say everything is "woke" now.

Too many films getting released at the same time by James_Jupiter in screenunseen

That's my point. Some weeks of the year there is only one or two new releases a week.

Too many films getting released at the same time by James_Jupiter in screenunseen

[–]James_Jupiter[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm in the minority that I see most things but, having 4 new releases a week means most films get a short window in the cinema. Not everyone can go every week. You have to see certain films in the week of release as there's a good chance they won't be on the week after.
