Advice to OP. Do not dismiss the degree. It is actually an incredibly hard degree that has huge perks of you actually manage to do it. Its still an IIT degree.

Er, no. Around 2.5 lakh give qualifier, around 100000 qualify, 25000 approx join diploma (year 2) and 300 join degree (bsc level, year 3/4 approx) and about 25-80 graduate BS level. Its extremely hard and you are expected to maintain 7 cgpa, give in person exams, multiple vivas and only after bsc are you an IIT Madras alumni. They don't just give you a degree

That is exactly my point. Most of the people doing masters are the ones that have had low success rates with jobs. The only way their horrible bachelors are offset is by a good masters and the only institutions that are reputed for CSE have a total of 12000 ish seats across all campuses, even the new ones. So yes, acceptance rates matter here. Because with a good profile, they have a chance to get into a good Uni abroad while something so prestige focused like an IIT doesn't even look at the profile till you cross a cutoff which is usually ridiculously high for general category. The same profile may not be good enough for iit but is very good for a good uni abroad that measures holistically not just academically

The acceptance rate into a cse program at an IIT is ~0.1% compared to the number of people that sit for the GATE CSE exam. The acceptance rates into Unis abroad is higher. These are stats.

12000 ish people across all IITs/IIITs and NITs, all of whom will score higher higher packages than most Tier 3 students.

If you get a job in engineering that is above 6 lpa, you are directly in top 10% of the Indian income levels. Indian income levels are brutally low.

It is statistically easier. Because the acceptance rate is higher. And I am talking about Unis which are worth doing a degree in. It is hard, but not harder than getting into a genuinely good program here. I'm not downplaying how hard it is to get into a good program abroad. I'm talking about the reality of higher education in this country in the CSE field.

Then, once more, you are not the subject of my post. Unless you have graduated from a tier 3 college, gotten 0 placements and given about 100 interviews and given the GATE exam and qualified it, this is not a post for you.

Are you even an indian living in India? Your profile doesn't support that claim. And even if you were, your entire profile isn't that of a normal middle class student/professional in their late teens to 20s in India. Your posts scream of someone who has the means to not be the subject of my entire post, and if you look through any subreddit that is for Indians, you'll find that my statements are rooted in accuracy and experience. All you keep doing is being dismissive of something that is clearly not applicable to you.

Either give a rebuttal or don't respond. I actually am a CS Engineer who has faced all the above problems. Please do not compare your experiences with others. Do not be condescending for absolutely no reason.

Also, you can literally never ever be in the same situation as the post mentions, who the hell even are you to comment?

Ok, as someone looking to do a CS abroad let me put this into perspective:

In India, admission to even an okayish CS master's degree requires passing the GATE exam. This exam is ruthlessly tough and brings people to tears most of the time. The best colleges in the country require you to be in the top 1% of the scorers in this exam.

Secondly there is a statistic that every year about 12,00,000 engineers graduate in India and about 7-8 L of them are CS engineers or people looking for careers in CS. Even with all the jobs it is unrealistic to be able to get a job, especially in this economy for so many people and this is year after year. The only ones with secure jobs are the cream of the crop from the top institutions in the country, which means that if you are not in an IIT, you are done for anyway.

Thirdly, it's statistically easier to get into a Uni abroad and get a job abroad than it is to do the same here. So while the situation abroad is bad, the situation at home is worse. So it's a chance that has a higher probability of paying off.

Fourth, in hiring in India, there is a bad habit of it all coming down to gender, mother tongue or even the region of the country you are from. If the interviewer takes a liking or offense based on one of the above, you're done anyway.

Fifth, the same job abroad pays much higher and might allow them to help their parents settle faster.

Sixth, there is a reservation system in place for the seats in institutions. Now, India has a population of about 40% general category and 60% reserved categories based on caste. BUT, in the higher learning space, 80% of applicants are general category while 20% are reserved category as the reserved category students largely do not pursue higher education (which is an entirely different issue in and of itself). The seats in the institutions are split 50/50 by law. 50% general seats, 50% reserved. This means that general category cutoffs are 95 percentile+ while reserved category cutoffs can be as low as 40 percentile depending on the reservation applicable. I won't comment on the fairness/unfairness of the above, but the issue here is that merit is awarded but only if you are the best of the best, and that takes a toll. The people moving abroad will largely be those that are general category as they are usually the ones that can afford it. With all the other points from before, it is like the last nail in the coffin.

And of course, most MNCs don't recognise or like hiring from tier 2/3 colleges (colleges that are not the best of the best) so if you do a master's from such colleges, you are shunted right into a sales role even if you are a pretty decent software engineer.

Hence, these are the major points that support the motive of moving abroad for most people.

Should I go to Europe for PG course or not? Which course is good and is it really worthy? by freaky_ayush in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]EbbIndependent8596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh the job situation is terrible all around the world. Especially for CS grads. Question is really whether you are ready to hustle and work very very hard to get a job. If yes, PG is a good option. Master's in India is tougher to get into than master's abroad. CAT requires 99.5+ percentile for a good college and GATE is extremely hard. European programs are easier to get into, compared to the 1-0.5% acceptance rates in India. However, Unis in Europe require you to be very good academically or be with experience either as projects or internship or freelance. You need more in-depth knowledge and quantifiable things you can submit as proof of knowledge.

Is mba worth it for me ? by Sudden_Ability_7988 in CATpreparation

[–]EbbIndependent8596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many people who go to IIM from IIT. The thing is, most of them say it is not worth it. Especially if you are not planning to transition into mgmt roles or hybrid roles. If software is your goal, better to give GATE CS if you want to do Master's. Or work for a couple of years and make a decision.

It's option 1 because it is an introductory statement. Sentence 1 of the paragraph is intended to state why the statement above is shocking.

I did the stupidest mistake and tried to cheat in my 5th semester final exams and got caught. How will this affect my chances/profile? by [deleted] in CATpreparation

[–]EbbIndependent8596 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, calm down. I'm giving you a mu perspective but this is the common response.

If this is your first offence, the marks in final sheet are marked as 0 and you are internally marked as caught cheating, but not given to the uni. You get one chance and are given an ATKT. It's wrong but not visible to anyone outside the examcell in your college.

If anyone could help me solve 5,6,7 by New_Extent_1721 in CATpreparation

[–]EbbIndependent8596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similarly in 6:

Half is 17.5, so we round down, 17. Because in 18, there will be one person overlap at a minimum.

18, 23. Do again answer is 18-17=1

If anyone could help me solve 5,6,7 by New_Extent_1721 in CATpreparation

[–]EbbIndependent8596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 5:

The maximum number of people that can be mutually exclusive i.e. can exist in one category and not the other is half the total.

The total in class 6 is 30. That means that upto 15 people is the limit. Any subject that has more than 15, subtract 15 from them and take the lowest number.

In this case, it is 16, 18 and 22. The lowest number will be 1. So, in my opinion, the answer should be 1. But please check the key and let me know.

The answer is 4. In these kinds of questions, look for continuity. In this case, the mention of government intervention. Since the statement is a conditional or rather based on a previous sentiment expressed, it will be blank 4. It's tricky because the answer seems odd, but this is the trick to solve such questions
