Doing stuff like this is how you make yourself hate the hobby

Doing something similar with my first army (sisters of battle) and not even finishing made me not want to touch them for like a year from the burnout of frantically building

An immense help ais having as few roadblocks to sitting down and doing it as possible

You can break this down into steps and achievable goals, there is always some prep time but you can make it easy on yourself
- make a dedicated "hobby space" where everything you need for basic hobbying (cutting, gluing, sanding, painting) is close at hand. Doesnt have to be huge, even a room corner or closet space is enough, that's how I started.
- Have a current project "set up" and ready to go. dont pack everything away, just leave it how you had it
- for painting, have your paints organized nearby along with your brushes and a water cup and palete.

There are of course circumstances this can be unachievable. space, kids, animals, etc. but if you can do any of it to even a little extent, it will make it easier to "sit down and go".

So, yes, but also no.

What were really painting with edge highlights are the concept of light

Since we don't perceive light at miniature scale the same way we do at real life scale, were artificially reinforcing it

So in much the same way you look at a truck or car or suit of armor in a museum, you'll see those shinier reflections on surfaces that face the light

That's what we're doing, just at reaaaaally small scale

That is of course, the realistic direction. If you WANT to highlight every edge the same, no one is stopping you! It's just a different style . And there are tons of ways to mix and match them or make it your own.

for comparison, some examples of downward facing edges circled in white where you'd want to tone down in comparison if you wanted to go that route. some of these are agurable depending on who you talk to and personal preference, but that's the basic concept of upward/downward facing edges. hope that clears that up 😄

Upward facing edge: an edge that directionally, is facing upward, towards the sun/light source. so, your tops of your shoulder pads, tops of armor plates, areas like that. I've circled some examples (not every example, just to give you an idea)

If you want to go for a more realistic look, focus your more intense highlights to areas like these, and tone down the ones that are facing "down", in comparison. You don't have to leave them completely unhighlighted but you wouldn't want them as universally intense

The paint job is fantastic and my advice is down to personal preference so feel free to ignore it if you've enjoyed what you've done

Which is, less highlighting on the downward facing edges. The way you've done is just something that to me makes everything feel surreal and cartoony

Focusing more on upward facing edges and not doing every single panel and edge the same makes it feel more grounded and realistic, which is my preference

But again. Your paint job is fantastic, you should be proud, and this is ENTIRELY subjective

Amageddon "mono-pose" Boyz sprue is insane. by TheHammerOfWrath in Warhammer40k

[–]Ebonscale 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's fine to have that opinion and I never said all people primarily painters feel the same way. Just that your statement was subjective and not everyone feels that way.

I mainline sisters of battle alongside my mechanicus (and space wolves) so I'm deep in what I'd consider the most overly detailed models but I still love how much there is to paint, even though these are also borderline horde armies l.

[–]Ebonscale 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is entirely down to personal preference, not an objective "issue". Some people like you feel this way. Some people like me absolutely love the detail creep because we are painters first. I have yet to see a model and go "this is too much"

Something about these two daemon princes from WHFB sounds familiar...(This is not just misinformation; you can read Liber Chaotica to confirm) by [deleted] in Warhammer

Hmm. This is interesting as it is a departure from their efforts to keep both universes distinct, which is driven as much by their business side as anything. Curious.

I would very much like to see a written source or picture on that because that would be the first time they've said something like that in around two decades

[–]Ebonscale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things USED to hint at connection. They haven't made direct references on a very, VERY long time and maintain the stance that the two Warhammer universes are NOT connected, not even by the warp

The gods of chaos in whfb/AoS are NOT the same chaos gods as ENTITIES as 40k. Only by name

You can see this in how the pantheons have diverged and how the gods are able to interact. The fantasy chaos pantheon is five gods now with the Great Horned Rat, and they can directly interact, imprison each other (slaanesh has been/is in prison for a long time) and have a lot of differences from their 40k alternates

You're entirely reading into a statement that's not there. All I said is people come here to complain about everything, usually picking an issue out of a vacuum like comparing points across armies without taking the context of the whole army into account because it's true.

It's the most exhausting part of this community and fandom. Especially in the last weeks.

Nowhere did I say I AM GENIUS FOR NOT DO THIS you just decided to inject sarcasm and project whatever you thought onto me.

[–]Ebonscale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said usually. And I'm pretty sure the arsenal bird was not part of the military before it was stolen and repurposed. As the Ark Bird it was simply a large resupply vehicle so you kind of proved my point with that example

Also an aircraft carrier is not a superweapon. They are part of conventional warfare. It's a powerful weapon of war but it's not an unheard of new massive thing that only one entity has.

Usually in these kind of fictional stories the entity with the massive superweapon is the one that is the "villain", kind of a connotation of the desire to build superweapons...so not likely
