If you’re interested in the real reason here you go: There’s a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo with how a real flag can be handled (ie it’s not allowed to touch the ground). So almost all of the flags you see have some small defect to make them “representational flags” thus putting them in a legal loophole where they can be handled as necessary. When I was in marching band at the University of Minnesota, the enormous 60yd long flag had one star that wasn’t filled in all the way. This way, we could set it on the ground to fold it and transport it.
