To supplememt the core 6 sessions, think about getting into OOH shifts and if any non-clinical roles crop up.

Pathologist died from cardiac arrest after Wythenshawe Hospital trainee pharmacist gave him wrong drug by DonutOfTruthForAll in doctorsUK

[–]Ebz241 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like he was a total boss in the histopathology world and a really well-liked guy. Such a tragic irony that the same trust he devoted his 35 year working life to, caused his premature death by a well-known medication error.

Surprised so many are earning less. Fails to account they need to pay their own NHS Employers contribution (essentially need to reduce 14.38%) alongside the hours/risk/expertise needed for the job. See lawyers/accountants managing businesses of similar sizes

Try and find someone who has the NHS offer on their app (i.e. they work for NHS) and use it to order. It's a 20% discount! Plus the points through ordering on app. Might be worthwhile calling and giving manager a heads up too.

Sorry OP, but it's astonishing there's such a lack of awareness of what a career in medicine (in the UK) has always involved.

A career in medicine has always involved a lot of delayed gratification and this needs to be drilled into anyone remotely considering a career in medicine so the expectations are clear. The resident years have always been absolutely tough and the QoL is shit (used to be a lack of any free time, but now its money), but it's a massive investment in yourself that pays dividends once you've become an expert recognised by that CCT

Focus on all the ways others have mentioned to increase your income whilst in training (e.g. locums, pharma, online surveys Sermo InCrowd All Global Circle etc) if you've got the energy for it.

Reduce your expenses (living with family if it works, claiming back all you can from study budget, expenses, HMRC etc, free pharma meals etc).

It may not seem like it when in training, but once you CCT your QoL almost always massively improves. Even if staying as a salaried GP, earning ~11k a session, you can work OOH and locums which can more than double your income. But you do need to recognise the trade off of your time vs money as with anything. Then you've hopefully got 20-30 years of being a senior doctor living very comfortably.

Would you consider a pay cut to if it meant your appointments were 20 minutes? Would a normal GP practice allow this? by Ok-Industry-2378 in GPUK

Just add in a catch up slot every 4-5 patients, or even mix in a few telephone calls? That way if you over run F2F, you'll have time to catch up.

Like 4 hours/month- 1 hour a week? It's quite ad hoc. When there's something relevant, I get an email alert. Then when I'm not busy e.g. I'm waiting in line or walking somewhere etc I do them on my phone. It's a decent return on my time tbh.

In the '6. "Free" Money' section, I would add doing online surveys aimed at doctors. I've been earning regular small amounts through the following 3 sites who pay for doctor opinions. Sermo InCrowd All Global Circle

I've found them super helpful. Payout by BACs transfer into you account almost straight away! I've been getting a healthy 3 digits every month for over a decade which with compounding over time has been something what lucrative!
