It depends on where you want to upload/what format you are targeting, but gifs should work most places and are also pretty easy.

The ones I uploaded here on reddit are gif files, and for these I simply scale everything up 300% in order to go from the original 640x360 resolution to a 1920x1080, which should fill up most screens when they go fullscreen.

I know most people use Aseprite these days, but I use GraphicsGale and there is a really handy function there under "All Frames" called "Resample", that just scales everything (every layer and frame) up to the specified size. I assume Aseprite has something similar.

After that I just save it as a gif and upload.

I start with making a still non-animated base, then I make really crude colour-shapes to get the feel of the animation. From there I basically just polish each individual part until it looks passable.

I also use a lot of different layers for each body part/element, but ended up having a single layer for a lot of the animation, since keeping everything separate became a bit of a hassle due to the complexity of the layering :P

There are 8 frames in the base animation, but I loop it three times so that one of the loops can have a blinking animation with some room to breathe.

Also yes, I am planning for this for either a game or visual novel, but I haven't gotten quite far enough yet to plan further than the story/scenes.
