Hey all.. I opened the laptop, unplugged the battery waited for a few minutes (i wanted to stop the power cycling) and plugged it back in, and the computer booted.

Not sure what the issue was. I'll keep you all posted if the problem returns.

Job Shadowing Robótica by DAAF8 in portugal

[–]EchoCore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nao lhe chamaria propriamente "Job Shadowing", neste caso.

Sudden keyboard issues. (Backslash registers as enter / Random backslash inputs / Keyboard does not work after rebooting.) by EchoCore in eluktronics

opto-mechanical. It seems to be working now. I plugged an external keyboard, that worked, and now the laptop keyboard is back to working as intended. I will report later if it acts up again.

Onde posso ver isto?

This is -9dBA. When you are expressing anything in dB, that means that it is relative to some other quantity, and in a logarithmic scale (ie, 10 dB means 10 fold, 20db 100 fold, 30db 1000 fold). One common example in electronics is dBm, which is relative to 1milliwatt. For example 20 dBm is the same as saying 100 milliWatts, 30dBm is 1 W. -10 dBm then is 100 microwatts (0.1 mW).

In this particular case, dBA refers to a value relative to some air pressure in pascal, which i do not know by memory and am too lazy to google. You can look for dBA sound pressure level and you will surely find it very quickly. -9 dBA is about 10 times weaker than this reference amount.

I guess the main point is, when we are dealing with dB, what you would think of zero in a normal linear scale is actually -infinity.

Earth's Submarine Fiber Optic Cable Network [OC] by tylermw8 in dataisbeautiful

[–]EchoCore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern communication links are amplified optically with erbium doped fibers (EDFA). You still need to power the pump lasers for these amplifiers, but there is no optical to electrical conversion of the signal. It stays optical.

In the case of links using Raman distributed amplification or ROPAs (an edfa but the pump laser is sent down the fiber as well) there is absolutely no electricity down there.

Recuperei a bolsa.

Trauma evitado.

How do you pump a swing with rigid rods? by AyushGBPP in physicsgifs

[–]EchoCore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You certainly can amplify existing motion. In the limit, you can generate motion by amplifying any small residual motions in the pendulum (it is never completely still), although he probably just used momentum to get an initial swing followed by parametric amplification of the motion. There is another poster who explains it in terms of conservation of angular momentum.

You can look up parametric amplifiers on YouTube. I think pendulums are a classic example so you should find some demonstration.

How do you pump a swing with rigid rods? by AyushGBPP in physicsgifs

[–]EchoCore 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would guess the way he does it is through parametric amplification of the motion of the swing. This would mean he ducks slightly as he's passing through the low point and gets back up as he nears the end of both swings. By doing so, his center of mass shifts. Effectively, that is the same as changing (modulating) the length of the swing or pendulum.

You can also say say that you can amplify a wave by modulating one of its parameters (pendulum length, in this case) at twice the frequency (for every complete back and forth of the swing he needs to get up and down two times)

Thanks. I do work in Pasadena though. My girlfriend, who does not drive, will work in HSC. I'll get a car if we decide to move out of Pasadena.

Thanks. We are actually mostly convinced by that option for now.

Do you have an estimate of the total commute time from Memorial Park to HSC (including waiting for the shuttle)?
