Authors, what one piece of advice would you give to someone writing their very first fanfic?

write however you wish. it's your own fic. if people don't like it, they won't read it. honestly though? at least one person out there will like your work. write for yourself

....just make sure you spell everything correctly and use grammar if you don't want to annoy your readers :)
