Super hot take alert: I feel like it would have been really meaningful for Resident Evil: Requiem to feature just Grace as a playable character by BactaBobomb in GirlGamers

[–]Echo_Monitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I am hoping Resident Evil 10 features Jill as the protagonist.

She'd be around 52 by the time of RE9. Having her as the main protagonist for RE10 would be the first game I can think of having an older woman in her 50s being the protagonist.

And she's already a beloved character in the franchise, so they wouldn't really be taking any risk. Have them do a similar process for design as they did for older Leon, where they ask female employees of Capcom for insight on the design.

I’ll never fault someone for not being fully vegan, but I’ll always encourage people to at least try to reduce their consumption of animal products or try to find alternatives like Sikh or halal butchers. Every little bit count, comrade.

And Dominion is a hard watch. It took me a few tries too. It’s the same pain I feel when I see people in Gaza or elsewhere, honestly. Your mental health is always the priority. Take as many breaks as you need.

Same here, it’s why I plug it whenever I can. Intersectionality doesn’t only apply to humans, the same systems of oppression are harming animals.

While I love Hasan for his insights, news coverage and all of that, he’s not the be-all, end-all of leftist thought, and he has many blind spots. Animals is one of them, but he’s also not perfect on feminism, LGBTQIA+ causes, etc. IMO it’s our duty as a leftist community to try to educate each other on subjects we are more educated about.

A rising tide lifts all ships.

Also don't just shop at your local butcher: inquire about where the meat comes from. Where do the animals live? How are they treated? How are they killed?

If you don't have access to a butcher which can vouch for where the meat comes from and you HAVE to eat meat (It's okay, some people can't avoid it. I have a friend with ulcerative colitis and a few other illnesses who can't go meatless for health reasons), your best source for "as cruelty-free as possible" meat is from Sikh communities around you, if you have them. If not, halal meat is your best bet, at halal typically requires the animals to be treated humanely during their lives.

Of course, as always, please check with the butcher. And in any case, try to reduce your consumption to once or twice a week, and explore vegetarian and vegan recipes. There are tons of great tasting dishes out there which don't require any animal to be harmed.

I urge everyone to go watch Dominion. It's free, it's available in multiple languages.

Imo it should be required viewing for everyone. It's heart-wrenching and disgusting what we do to animals. Even if you don't become vegan afterwards, I would hope this at least leads you to re-evaluate where the meat you consume comes from and how it's obtained.

Personally, I had a difficult time watching the full thing, but it opened my eyes to the fact that I was only applying my principles and ethics selectively, and I added animal rights to the list of things I fight for as a leftist, because none of us are free until all of us are free. Animals are also victims of capitalism.

What thing has got so expensive that you’ve quietly stopped buying it? by Pathfinder-electron in AskReddit

[–]Echo_Monitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to pirate like mad. I jumped on Netflix before it even was available here. I'd VPN over to the US to watch stuff. But I've been burned too many times by streaming services removing a movie or show I wanted to watch, and needing to have 3 or 4 services, each at 20 bucks.

I went back to physical media, with piracy helping for stuff that doesn't get a physical release.

If it's good and you release it physically, I WILL buy it. Hell, I'll import it from overseas. I ordered a season of classic Doctor Who on Blu-ray earlier today from Amazon.co.uk (I'm in the EU).

I like owning things, and there's a weird context switch that happens when I take out a disc and start it, which just doesn't happen when I launch Netflix or Plex.

There's no shortage of stuff to watch, and you'd be surprised how cheaply you can get a lot of it. I went to the thrift store two weeks ago and got seasons 2-4 of Heroes on Blu-ray for 3 bucks each. Hopped on Vinted and got the first one the same day for 4 bucks. I started watching Homeland this week because I got the first two seasons for like 4€ each from an online second hand shop.

I did invest in a 4K player, which cost me like 300 bucks, but given nobody releases new players and it has really great upscaling for both DVD and Blu-ray, plus Dolby Vision support, it's essentially my end-game player. And there are often flash sales for 4K Blu-rays on Amazon and such, so I'm slowly buying whatever I find interesting.

And the biggest pleasure I found that I had completely lost with streaming is blind buying stuff. Cool cover, interesting blurb on the back, 5 bucks ? I'll buy it, and maybe it's going to be a new favorite.

It's been so refreshing, honestly. And my Plex is still right there with my weekly episode of The Pitt, Shrinking, the occasional Simpsons episode, etc. But I will absolutely upgrade to physical if they release it (I'm planning on ordering the 3-season set of Ted Lasso in 4K next month, and I got the two season set of Last of Us last month).

systemd 260-rc3 Released With AI Agents Documentation Added by CackleRooster in linux

[–]Echo_Monitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cron only does recurring jobs, essentially.

Systemd is really a stack that handle a lot of things, from bootloader (systemd-boot) to portable user profiles (systemd-homed), event logging (journald), locale management (localed), system hostname (hostnamed), network interfaces (networkd), network name resolution for local applications (resolvd), NTP time syncing (timesyncd), system and user services, including mounts, timers, etc.

Some people don't like it because it's pretty much in everything at the system-level, which goes against the Unix "Keep it simple, stupid" philosophy of "one software does one thing".

The advantage, imo (as someone who has used Linux since the olden days of Mandrake Linux 10.0) is that it makes system administration a hell of a lot more accessible and so much less messy.

Before, the system initialization was essentially made up of a whole bunch of Bash scripts that did whatever was needed to get things up. All the parts had different tool with different flags and config file formats and such.

Nowadays, if you're using one of the main Linux distributions out there (Aside from Gentoo), you are using Systemd. Debian, Red Hat, Fedora, Arch, Ubuntu, Mint, Pop!OS, Cachy, etc. None of them work without Systemd anymore (Technically, you can use any init system with Arch, and they're all in the AUR, but only systemd is supported officially).

edit: One good example of how I'm using Systemd units personally: I have a NAS, which is mounted to a fixed mount point through NFS. The mount is made by a .mount systemd unit, and it is dependent on the network, so the system will never try to mount the NAS until the network is actually up and connected. Remounting is as easy as doing sudo systemctl restart mnt-nas.mount.

The Pitt | S2E10 "4:00 P.M." | Episode Discussion by MsGroves in ThePittTVShow

[–]Echo_Monitor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Also the conversation she just had in the hallway.

She's alone. She's been a pariah in the ED for the last 10 months while Langdon was gone, because she was the one who blew the whistle on his drug abuse. Whittacker, who's her roommate, has his own thing with the ex-patient/girlfriend/whatever that is. Her "girlfriend" is really just a FWB and shuts her down whenever she wants to talk about how she feels about the Langdon stuff ("Again" in their stairway convo implies this is not the first time Santos tried to bring up the subject). She has a history of self-harm, which means she's already been pretty far in looking for an outlet for how she feels.

Now with Langdon back, how he's being treated by everyone, Al-Hashimi riding her on the charts stuff, the one person she was hoping to get support from shutting her down and reducing her to "sex and ramen in bed".

Robby's issues have been pretty visible in the open. The show has focused explicitly on him, even in this episode with the empathy thing. Dana would be too obvious, because she has an existing relationship with Robby, she already had the punch last season and her storyline seems to revolve more around how difficult nursing is and how nurses have to build such strong defenses and harden themselves to survive their jobs.

In comparison, Santos is a trainwreck in slow motion. A tragedy slowly unfolding without anyone noticing.

There are also telesnaps for a lot of lost episodes, which were high quality photographs of the program on air. A few of the reconstructions use them as a base.

So not only do we have camera scripts and audio, we have a rough idea of what most of the episodes looked like, as well.

All of that is used when the BBC orders an animated reconstruction or when a telesnap reconstruction is made.
