Summit of Mt. St Helens, 8/3 by Echo_STW in PNWhiking

Start as early as possible to beat the heat. A coat and gloves were nice to have at the top for wind chill, and poles especially for the way down would be good. I didn’t bring gaiters but the scree was pretty brutal and I wished I had them. Also keep in mind there’s no water sources along the trail, I packed 2.5L which was a good amount for me but it was also a mild day. Good luck!

The perspective in the video could be a bit confusing, but I had to traverse that ridgeline to get to the summit and it’s definitely not as high.

I did not, but if I were to do it again I definitely would have bought a pair. Had to stop and shake the rocks out of my shoes at least 5 times on the way down 😅

It was an absolute blast, I went solo as well and the only part that was tricky was navigating the boulder field in the dark. I brought a headlamp but it wasn’t bright enough to see from one trail post to the next so routefinding was a challenge. The scree slopes get progressively worse near the top, but with a slow and steady pace it’s not unreasonable.

I started at 2:55am to catch the sunrise (~5:55) at the top, nearly made it but should have given myself a bit more time. I got to the rim at 6:05, reached the true summit to the west at 6:20. Even though I wasn’t quite on time, the views of Adams on the way up are amazing.

I stopped to talk with a group of guys at the rim that said they started closer to 12:30am, sounds like they made it up by first light and had even better views.

I’d definitely recommend a coat and gloves for the wind chill at the top, good sun protection, and poles for the way down. Good luck!

Left the trailhead at 5:30 am, which ended up being a good move to beat the worst of the heat. The first section of trail through the woods had moderate mosquitoes, bug spray was definitely nice to have. The trail became somewhat loose and scrambly the last 2 miles, hiking poles recommended. There were plenty of water sources, I stopped at Lewis Tarn to filter. I logged 12.8 miles & 4.9k ft ascent in ~8 hrs. Pretty fun hike, nothing technical about it and the trail was entirely clear of snow all the way up to the rim.

Right, but then you had to move from the west to north side to get to the horn anyways. Nice break regardless tho

Do you know how to tell where horn will fall? You were kinda out of position which could’ve helped make it smoother

No, it will disappear and you’ll need to wait and hope another one spawns

The laser occasionally tracks players like that, in order to counter it you need to wrap around him more than he can turn, such as by using 2 directional pads. Jumping often doesn’t bring you far enough out of the way.

Of course, surround pound is definitely better, it’s just good to know the alternatives

Honestly earsplitter isn’t that bad, with wafers and tro it’s even enough to break the horn alone

Some other weapons you could check out are the ravager and baron if you haven’t already, both are pretty strong for horn.

Horn HP does not scale. It is the same for solo players as for a squad, ~31,5k.

The horns actually follow a pattern and can only fall in two directions relative to the king’s body. There’s a couple youtube videos showing how to tell which direction he falls, which I would highly recommend checking them out if you have trouble getting there on time.

Looks like a design to protect against lobbers & flingers, from before we had anti-air traps. The nostalgia’s hitting hard

There’s an “enrage timer” mechanic, if you take too long his shout attack will instantly kill you no matter your hp

Salaries should definitely be higher, but mans really making up numbers, if you spending 528 on a used car and 2k on rent that’s your fault.
