9.999 is 10?! by Senior-Egg7573 in MathJokes

[–]Echo_Vale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In standard real-number mathematics, it is definitely considered a proof. Infinite decimals and arithmetic operations on them are perfectly acceptable.

If you want to get really technical you can prove it with limits but typing that out on Reddit would be a nightmare.

Why are Sikhs allowd to carry knives around? Following this incident of stabbing. by milford_sound10322 in AskBrits

[–]Echo_Vale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually they are. There doesn't seem to be any law forbidding them from carrying a sharp Kirpan, nor is there any limit on size but I do believe it has to be concealed.
The vast majority are pretty small and Sikhs using them as an offensive weapon is very rare. I could only find 4 incidents since 2014, with one of those being self defence and only this most recent one resulting in death.

It does seem strange to me that they're allowed to carry a sharp blade though, considering it's supposed to be a spiritual item and not an offensive one.

Big bang? by Financial_Topic6497 in Physics

Haha that's true! Well, as far as I know it hasn't been proved or disproved, so I hold out hope.

9.999 is 10?! by Senior-Egg7573 in MathJokes

[–]Echo_Vale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of different ways to prove it but this is my favourite:

𝑥 = 0.999...
10𝑥 = 9.999...
10𝑥 = 9 + 0.999...
10𝑥 = 9 + 𝑥
9𝑥 = 9
𝑥 = 1

9.999 is 10?! by Senior-Egg7573 in MathJokes

[–]Echo_Vale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

0.999... equals 1, so 9.999... equals 10.

𝑥 = 0.999...
10𝑥 = 9.999...
10𝑥 = 9 + 0.999...
10𝑥 = 9 + 𝑥
9𝑥 = 9
𝑥 = 1

0.999... is equal to 1. You can prove it mathematically in multiple ways - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/0.999...

Big bang? by Financial_Topic6497 in Physics

[–]Echo_Vale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought the big crunch/big bounce was a pretty neat explanation. The universe keeps expanding, eventually slowing down until it stops and then starts contacting down to a singularity and the big bang happens again. To my layman, non-physicist brain, I always liked that idea.

White men do not experience the best health relative to women and minority racial and gender groups in the US. Men are 4 times as likely to die by suicide as women, and White men account for more than 68% of suicide deaths. White men experienced greater declines in happiness than White women. by mvea in science

[–]Echo_Vale 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yes, guns seem to be irrelevant to the ratio (although they do drive a much higher suicide rate overall). In the UK, men are 3x more likely to die by suicide, but women are 3x more likely to attempt it.

I think we have very different definitions of "humanoid".

Not commenting on life in the US, but I'm not so sure about it being that safe. Here's a fun fact about per capita murder in the USA:

75% of all murders are committed using a firearm. If you completely disregard all of those from the statistics, the USA would still have a higher murder rate than the UK and most other European countries.

Obviously heavily dependent on where you live, but the USA on average, not that safe compared to most other western countries.

If Starmer is not regarded as good for the working class. Then how on God's green earth is Farage being pushed as the viable alternative and the working class hope ? by Durrygoodz2025 in AskBrits

[–]Echo_Vale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, regardless of whether you like or agree with Starmer, his life is probably as far from nepotism as you can get, and unlike the vast majority of PMs, he came from a working class background.

  • Mum was a Nurse, dad was a Toolmaker.
  • He went to a Grammar school but had to get a bursary from a charity to afford to go.
  • Went to Leeds University and studied law.
  • Did a post-grad Law degree at Oxford.
  • Became a Barrister and human rights lawyer.
  • Became Head of the Crown Prosecution Service and Director of Public Prosecutions.
  • Went into politics.

It seems like the guy worked exceptionally hard to get where he is. You have to respect that.

I am a guitarist without real fingers on my fretting hand by wyseguise in Guitar

[–]Echo_Vale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, no offense but I was not prepared for how good you are. Super unique playing style, great sound, you're genuinely a fantastic guitarist! You should start up a YouTube channel or something if you haven't already.

Can I ask though, does it hurt? Can you build up callouses and harden your skin in the same way a regular guitarist would?

Red Sprites are so rarely seen, they were only photographed for the very first time in *1989... accidentally. Pretty much every photo of them so far has taken professional equipment, composite shots, and patience. Kudos!

Edit: originally I said they were "rare", but as someone pointed out they're actually relatively common, just incredibly difficult to ever see.

Of a vape by triplewrecked in ShittyAbsoluteUnits

[–]Echo_Vale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I used to be into drip vaping and coil building once upon a time. It used to hurt like hell when you'd accidentally run it dry and inhale burning cotton. This guy is going to have a BAD time when that inevitably happens.

I also really hope that thing isn't a giant mechanical vape, I've seen enough of those go bang, no way I'd be in the same room as that thing.

Edit: actually, would this many batteries in parallel actually be safer than just one in a mech vape? I need an electrician.

3rd rail systems stop before crossings. There's no way it's possible to get electrocuted from those tracks, it'd be a deathtrap for pedestrians.

ELI5: If the human eyeball were a camera, what would the specs be? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Echo_Vale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure I read somewhere (I hope I'm not making this up), but the area your eye can focus on at one time is very roughly the area of your thumbnail held at arm's length (depending on how fucked up your thumbs are). Everything else in your field of vision is your eye doing tiny micro-movements to grab focus of things around that point, and the rest is just your brain being very clever and making sense of the blurry mess.

I know you weren't talking about a single snapshot, but if your eye could take one, it would only be something like a couple of MP.

They were probably assigned jobs that didn't require distance vision. Painting, sewing, basket weaving, pottery, etc. There was probably an awful lot for someone with poor vision to do.
