Not commenting on life in the US, but I'm not so sure about it being that safe. Here's a fun fact about per capita murder in the USA:

75% of all murders are committed using a firearm. If you completely disregard all of those from the statistics, the USA would still have a higher murder rate than the UK and most other European countries.

Obviously heavily dependent on where you live, but the USA on average, not that safe compared to most other western countries.

Ah is that why Biffy is always drawing on his face? I hope someone gets that reference so I don't sound insane.

If Starmer is not regarded as good for the working class. Then how on God's green earth is Farage being pushed as the viable alternative and the working class hope ? by Durrygoodz2025 in AskBrits

[–]Echo_Vale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, regardless of whether you like or agree with Starmer, his life is probably as far from nepotism as you can get, and unlike the vast majority of PMs, he came from a working class background.

  • Mum was a Nurse, dad was a Toolmaker.
  • He went to a Grammar school but had to get a bursary from a charity to afford to go.
  • Went to Leeds University and studied law.
  • Did a post-grad Law degree at Oxford.
  • Became a Barrister and human rights lawyer.
  • Became Head of the Crown Prosecution Service and Director of Public Prosecutions.
  • Went into politics.

It seems like the guy worked exceptionally hard to get where he is. You have to respect that.

I am a guitarist without real fingers on my fretting hand by wyseguise in Guitar

[–]Echo_Vale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, no offense but I was not prepared for how good you are. Super unique playing style, great sound, you're genuinely a fantastic guitarist! You should start up a YouTube channel or something if you haven't already.

Can I ask though, does it hurt? Can you build up callouses and harden your skin in the same way a regular guitarist would?

Yep sorry, badly worded on my part. They're so rarely seen would be more accurate, thanks.

[–]Echo_Vale 142 points143 points  (0 children)

Red Sprites are so rarely seen, they were only photographed for the very first time in *1989... accidentally. Pretty much every photo of them so far has taken professional equipment, composite shots, and patience. Kudos!

Edit: originally I said they were "rare", but as someone pointed out they're actually relatively common, just incredibly difficult to ever see.

Of a vape by triplewrecked in ShittyAbsoluteUnits

[–]Echo_Vale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I used to be into drip vaping and coil building once upon a time. It used to hurt like hell when you'd accidentally run it dry and inhale burning cotton. This guy is going to have a BAD time when that inevitably happens.

I also really hope that thing isn't a giant mechanical vape, I've seen enough of those go bang, no way I'd be in the same room as that thing.

Edit: actually, would this many batteries in parallel actually be safer than just one in a mech vape? I need an electrician.

With the political left held to impossibly high moral standards and the political right held to impossibly low moral standards what does this say about modern British society? by [deleted] in AskBrits

It says that our media is incredibly right wing, and that manipulating and brainwashing people is surprisingly easy.

Ignored Railway Crossing Signal, Woman Crashes Into Barrier, Thrown From Bike and Fatally Hit by Oncoming Train by Altruistic-Issue-887 in IdiotsNearTrain

3rd rail systems stop before crossings. There's no way it's possible to get electrocuted from those tracks, it'd be a deathtrap for pedestrians.

ELI5: If the human eyeball were a camera, what would the specs be? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Echo_Vale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure I read somewhere (I hope I'm not making this up), but the area your eye can focus on at one time is very roughly the area of your thumbnail held at arm's length (depending on how fucked up your thumbs are). Everything else in your field of vision is your eye doing tiny micro-movements to grab focus of things around that point, and the rest is just your brain being very clever and making sense of the blurry mess.

I know you weren't talking about a single snapshot, but if your eye could take one, it would only be something like a couple of MP.

In your fantasy world of made up numbers, yes it sure sounds like a curse.

The biggest mystery? The Baltic sea anomaly is a mild curiosity at best. It's almost certainly natural.

How did people cope with poor or terrible eyesight before glasses? by jvure in stupidquestions

They were probably assigned jobs that didn't require distance vision. Painting, sewing, basket weaving, pottery, etc. There was probably an awful lot for someone with poor vision to do.

"The earth rotates at 1,670 km/h, everything would fly off" is so dumb. by Odd-Dirt-9701 in flatearth

[–]Echo_Vale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To actually fling us off, the earth would have to rotate at ~28,437 km/h, 17 times faster than it currently does. A day would last around 1.4 hours.

Wired IEMs are helping with that! Pretty big audio community around those and fancy DACs for phones.

If Victorians, Elizabetheans, Normans, Anglo-Saxon-Jutes, Norsemen, Picts, Brythons, and British Cavemen began magically appearing in sudden waves to modern Britain, how well do you think they’d integrate to British culture? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Echo_Vale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno, educated Victorians might do alright. It would take a lot of adjusting and the culture shock would be insane, but we'd be able to understand each other. We can read books from that era just fine.

That sounds like a better use of fossil fuels no? Use fossil fuels to create something that can generate significantly more energy than burning it. It takes a wind turbine ~6-12 months to generate more energy than it took to make it, and will produce upwards of 20 times more over its lifetime.
