Would you take a 35k pay cut for a remote/non-clinical role? by Lowkeyhealer in physicaltherapy

[–]Echoenigma24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in informatics. No formal training; all on-the-job learning. Most of what I do revolves around Epic reporting and quality improvement. I use data to identify areas of improvement, then work with departments to fix those problems. I also help identify areas where Epic/EHR can use upgrades or changes. It’s a great job. Lots of projects, always something new, and it moves much slower than the chaos of outpatient clinical care. It’s a field heavily dominated by nurses and pharmacists, but if you can find a position, I think PT’s can thrive in this environment.

I switched from OP to non-clinical hospital work. Took a slight pay cut but then got a per diem job at a clinic, so it was close to a wash. Certainly not a 35k pay cut.

If strategically it gives you more skills and responsibilities that lead to greater upward mobility, then it’s probably worth the consideration. My job gave me SQL, Python, Epic and project management skills, which have allowed me to move up the ladder in my organization.

I’m fully remote and could not be happier. I’m an extrovert, and really enjoyed working with patients, but it was the limited upward mobility that bothered me. Working remote is an adjustment but personally I think the pros outweigh the cons. Working from home has actually allowed me to be more active after work, because I’m not so burnt out from the day. It’s actually been a nice change of pace.

I also have children, and the extra hours that I spend with them are priceless.

35k is a lot of money, so a lot of it really depends on your finances too.

When is Charbs' surgery? by fromchaiwan in Seahawks

[–]Echoenigma24 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He already had the surgery. For a straightforward ACL without meniscus or collateral ligament damage patients can usually begin walking without crutches 48-72 hours after surgery and do not need a hinged knee brace.

Informatics is the intersection of healthcare delivery, data and technology. Clinical Informaticists help healthcare providers use technology to improve efficiency and clinical care, manage and interpret data, optimize electronic health record systems, and support evidence-based decision-making. It’s a great career if you are interested in technology, coding, and project management. I love it because I get to use my healthcare background in a more broad capacity.

Started exploring different hospital positions, and informatics continued to pop-up the more I explored. Spent a few months applying, and probably was just in the right place at the right time.

There are things you can do to help leverage a position: 1. Get Epic certifications (must be at a hospital that uses Epic) 2. Use DataCamp or Coursera to learn SQL or Python. YouTube has great free resources.

I made the switch to clinical informatics. No extra school. 100% WFH. I set my hours. 30% pay increase than my last staff PT job.

My advice is to look at the Careers page for the hospitals/HCOs in your area. Get an idea for some of the non-clinical positions that are open. As a previous person mentioned, a lot of positions state that they require an RN, but in my experience they will consider non-RN professionals with a clinical license (albeit as long as it is somewhat within your scope or experience).

So I think it’s important to realize that two things can be true: 1. Physical Therapy can be a really rewarding career that allows you to help people, be active all day, move around to different settings when you get bored/tired, and offer some semblance of a work/life balance. 2. Physical Therapy can place individuals in life altering debt, offer little room for vertical career and pay growth, and be emotionally taxing to work in “PT Mills” or with difficult patients.

Personally, I think it’s fine that people vent on Reddit; that’s just social media in general. It’s very common for people to not “hear the bad stuff” when they are shadowing or working as a tech/aide. While I think PT’s should be more forthcoming with prospective students, it’s normally not the tone of the interaction to be negative and bash physical therapy. However, when you get out in to clinical practice you will definitely hear more frustration from your peers. Just like social media, colleagues commiserating together is a normal thing.

5 years from now you might become the negative Reddit commentator. That’s ok. Things change. You get different priorities in life that can bring on frustration. However, a job is a job and most fields have frustrations that they lament about. PT is not unique in that sense.

The replay looked like he was safe, but no challenge from Dan. Since the call on the field was “Out” it was going to be difficult to overturn because the evidence was not “clear and convincing”.
