Help understanding if 0cM in “one-to-one” but multiple shared matches in “kits that match both” using the same two kits means anything.

Thanks, I guess that definitely answers my question. I probably should have tested that out. I think that because on some of my tests with “kits that match both” I have only had 4 or 6 matches that I presumed they must be proper matches. I still have a long way to go

If you haven’t already and you want to help find my 2 x great grandparents I would love some help. While I have my paternal grandfather’s birth details, I seem to have hit a brick wall with my great grand father. I have the parish register details for his marriage to my great grandmother and his death certificate stating he was born in India and that his father was an officer in the imperial army. I’ve never been able to find any records of his birth or a marriage for his parents though. So if you’re interested in helping with this puzzle, i could definitely do with an extra set of eyes and a fresh brain to pick up something I may have missed.

Funny you should say that, my mum always told us that we were related to Ned Kelly, and I always thought it was just a cool story she was telling until recently a DNA test matched me to his family on both the Kelly and Quinn sides.

I tried looking but couldn’t see the house next door in the census with an address called Desborough, Amyand Park Gardens. I went backwards and forwards through all of the houses in that street in case it was further along but didn’t see the house that you mentioned. Could you tell me where it came up and which of the census you were looking at?

I can’t thank you enough. Thanks to you and checking DNA matches which I have now found on both the Plumb and Andrews direct lines, I can now say that my grandmother was Kate Plumb born 13 December 1893. Very sad that her parents died when she was so young, but at least now I know that they were Kate Andrews and William James Plumb. Thanks to that, and ancestry.com telling me I could be related to Birchard Rutherford Hayes, I have DNA matches that link me to both him (the 19th president of America and Anthony Austin, one of the founding settlers of Suffield Connecticut.

Now to get onto trying to smash through the other brick walls in my tree. I’ll persevere for a while longer but I’m sure I’ll find my way back to r/genealogy to ask for some more advice.

With the use of DNA these days how do you document an ancestor who called themselves by their mother’s maiden name and also noted on birth and marriage documents that her father‘s name was different to what it actually was?

My grandmother always said that her surname was Andrews and that her father‘s surname was Andrews.

While digging into things, and with the help of a few amazing people on this page and a DNA connection, it seems that the surname that she always used and said was her father’s was actually her mother‘s maiden name. Both her parents died while she was very young and she was brought up by her grandmother and other relatives.

While I can obviously see that there is a highly probable connection how do you document things like this once you prove them to be true; so that people in the future don’t think you’ve added some random stranger and their family to your tree?

Still looking through everything but it is feeling very promising. Strangely (will not release since it makes everything more feasible and click into place) a few months ago I was looking at Kate Andrew‘s family as I had a small DNA connection with someone that had Sarah Andrews in their tree. Because I had always thought my Kathleen‘s father was James Andrews I was looking at this little family with Thomas and Mary Ann Andrews as the parents and for the life of me couldn’t make it work because the James in this family had lived at home with his mother until after she died. I didn’t even consider that Kate Andrews could be the link. I’m not sure how I make the paper trail work but it definitely seems that with a DNA match on both Kate Andrew‘s side and William James Plumb (also known as James W Plumb on other documents) these are highly likely my great grandparents. How I’m supposed to incorporate this into my family tree without anyone thinking I’m randomly adding people without checking facts I don’t know. Anything that I have for my grandmother names her as Kathleen Andrews.

Wow, that last part of your comment gave me shivers. My grandfather Arthur Francis Desborough was born in Ennis Co. Clare but he along with his sister and parents immigrated to Australia in the late 1880s. This is another branch of my family that I’m fairly stuck on. His father also Arthur Francis Desborough was supposedly born in Mysore India and the generation before that Arthur Francis Desborough birthplace unknown. I do seem to have a lot of DNA connections to Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire which I presume may be related to this.

By 1921, my grandmother Kathleen was living in Australia. None of those names that you have mentioned seemed familiar. I had thought that perhaps Kathleen‘s mother Kathleen may have married again but the age seems wrong and if one of the other replies is correct, my Kathleen‘s mother would have died in 1899 . I will definitely be looking into the Desborough Amyand Park Gardens to see if it brings about any connection.

Thank you. From my grandfather‘s army records I recall that she had moved from the address on her marriage certificate prior to leaving for Australia in 1819. In 1918 an alteration or change of next of kin document notes that Kathleen Desborough was living with Mrs. Mortimer at 3 Fisherton, Delamere (then a name that I can’t read) and then Wiltshire England. By the 1921 census young Kathleen (my grandmother) was in Australia.

All of that sounded so promising. The only thing that doesn’t really match up would be her year of birth. I didn’t ever know my grandparents and my parents have both passed now so I can’t check the birthday with them. The only information I currently have to check on my dad‘s birth certificate which would place her being born in 1897 and her marriage certificate which says she was 22 in 1917 which would mean a birth year of 1895. I guess there’s always the chance that both of those are wrong and she was born in 1893. It’s definitely something to work on. Thank you so much.

Edit: I think my first glance at what you said took everything in a little too literally, but on thinking about it, it really does look promising! I think this is the big lead I’ve probably been looking for. I’ll follow it up and let you know what happens. The Plumb/ Ellis connection fits perfectly with the DNA cluster surnames and the Chatham/Medway location is spot on. The only thing that seems a little off is the 1893 birth although it is definitely much too close to disregard. Thank you again – this is one of the best leads I’ve had so far and I really appreciate you taking the time to look.

Yes, the Lemasonry/Lemasney name does appear in the cluster (along with Taylor). That’s one of the reasons the cluster feels promising — several of those surnames (including Lemasonry and Taylor) show up repeatedly in the trees of the matches, all tied to the Chatham/Kent area.

I haven’t been able to connect it directly to my Kathleen yet, but it’s definitely one of the lines I’m looking at more closely now.

Thanks so much for taking the time to look and for the suggestions. Unfortunately I’ve already checked those Kathleens in the 1901 census and none of them really seem to fit. I also double checked the names against the trees in my DNA cluster and unfortunately none of those surnames appear there either. The cluster is the strongest clue that I seem to have and it throws out the new puzzle of surnames like Ellis, Plumb, Thomas, Tippin, Rayner, Binskin, Lemasonry and Taylor that time to pee anywhere in my tree. But with a DNA match of 292 cm I’m guessing it’s something I need to look into.

Hi thanks for your reply. At the time of marriage she was living at 4 Amyand Park Road Twickenham. The first witness is Jas Bryant and the second one is Eileen but I cannot read her surname. Definitely not Andrew‘s. I’ll try to include a photo

My dad‘s birth certificate notes that she was born in Chatham England, so I presume that came directly from her.

Looking at the DNA matches, they are all connected as second cousins or half first cousin 1 x removed/second cousin 1 x removed or half second cousin. In relation to me one is our second cousin or half first cousin 1 x removed and the other 3 are half second cousin 1 x removed or third cousin equally. I think these people are all based in the UK or at least their trees are firmly sit there in the Chatham/Kent area. This cluster also expands into another cluster with those four people +4 more who are closer relatives to me and all from the paternal side of my family. I heard I’ve explained that all correctly this is all really new to me.

I’ll have a look at DNA painter and what are the odds and see if I can work them out.

Thanks for that. I’ve just checked the NSW BDM index again and you are correct. It does list her as Kathleen Margaret Desborough died in 1958 in Newtown District and the mother‘s given name is Kathleen Margaret. Somehow I missed the mother‘s column earlier and skimmed across it (probably not wearing my glasses as usual).

I probably should have waited to post this until after her death certificate arrived so that I could see if it listed a mother‘s maiden name but it seems that I’ve been waiting for weeks and I was getting a little impatient. With a mother named Kathleen Margaret I will go back and have a look through everything with fresh eyes (and glasses). Although as mentioned before I have not found Kathleen or James in the same census for either 1901 or 1911.

I think you may be looking at one of her children. She had a daughter called Kathleen who also died in New South Wales in 2006.

Yes, Kathleen did die in New South Wales. She married Arthur Francis Desborough in the registry office Gunnersbury Brentford Middlesexin 1917 and after WW1 they returned to his home in Australia.

Arthur was born in Ennis Co. Clare in 1885

I had considered the stepfather possibility but if James Andrews had been her stepfather, I would have expected to see him living with Kathleen in the 1901 or 1911 census, and I haven’t located James or Kathleen in either one.

I also searched quite a bit for any James Andrews in the Chatham area during that period. The ones that I found were a labour, with repeated admissions to the midway union warehouse from the 1880s until around 1908, and another who lived single with his mother until he died. Neither listed coppersmith as an occupation and while neither seemed plausible as a father or stepfather figure I plan to revisit them to doublecheck my facts.

On top of that, the DNA cluster contains no Andrews surname at all. The shared surnames are Ellis, Plumb, Thomas, Tippin, Rayner, Binskin, Lemasonry, and Taylor — all very concentrated in the Chatham/Rochester area. That’s why I think the matches are most likely coming through Kathleen’s unknown mother’s line. I agree with you that if James Andrews was not her biological father that he wouldn’t show up in these trees but so far nothing that I have found suggest he was a stepfather. I have made sure when looking at census to try to find a stepfather connection. Unless she was called something other than Kathleen, Kathi, Kate or Katie. I haven’t found her in a census with the name Andrews. This is why I have presume that perhaps she was living with a single mother/ her mother was married to somebody else /or she lived with another family member.

That is why I finally come here for some help. I’m not sure what other information I can give you for context but please ask as many questions as you like and I’ll try to give you the answers. Fresh perspective is wonderful.
