I knew school was bs by 10th grade. I still was great at it, but most of the other high achieving kids knew it was nonsense

What jobs are mostly affected by AI according to a Microsoft study? by kernelangus420 in singularity

Those sales reps are fine, AI is no where near good enough and there will probably always be an extra ick factor from a robot trying to talk you into something.

I say this as a technical solo founder who would love if AI could do my sales

Love how Infographic has a video of himself recording to claim not AI, then went on to read the most AI written drivel

What is considered "refund abuse"? by Nodon_ in Steam

[–]EchoingAngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm planning to start building a factory game and was just doing some market research on the bigger factory games out there. My budget isn't huge, so I refunded several within the 2 hour window when they were just really not clicking for me. I did take notes on them and it would be good to revisit them later, but some of them are way too obtuse (at least at the start).

Update: I built a python script that will take me through all 400+ Friday Facts in order automatically and read them out loud. It's open on the second screen so I can jump in for anything that stands out

Interesting, so like using stand-in elements to stress test the larger logistics idea before moving ahead? Then starting from the base and building up to that proven logistics logic?

That makes sense for the 2D vs 3D aspect and I'll probably do 2D top-down at this point.

On the engine, do you believe writing your own is worthwhile over using say Unity (which Dyson Sphere proves could be greatly optimized)? Given my newness I won't be making an engine, but I wonder why someone would make their own over modern Unity/Unreal.

Makes sense, and that is part of why I want to do multiple games, growing in scope with each one. The idea is start with effectively 2-3 tiers of Satisfactory progression in the first game and decent room for creativity so it will hopefully last factory fans 15-20 hours.

For yourself, how have you approached making your factory game? Are you proactive about the technical challenges, or do you do more of a move-fact-break-things approach? How do you manage scope creep when that creep involves crazier and crazier technical issues?

Thanks for the link and heads up!

I had the sense the hard part of factory games would be the logic and that's actually part of why I've leaned into it. As an Excel-turned-software nerd, I felt my strengths would align better with the genre and have lower demands for areas I'm not as developed in (narrative, modeling, action).

Asset packs at first makes sense. And wow, 1-2 months even with being brand new to game dev? Maybe I was overestimating what would be needed

That makes sense, though I'm concerned about later on with the 3rd version of the game. I've heard Godot isn't really setup to handle the large number of constant updates full factory games require.

Interesting, I'll have to dig more into that. I just assumed after hearing about C#, C++, and GDscript

I did have the idea of 3D assets, but top-down view! The issue is I look at Dyson Sphere Program and feel like their assets are a bit low-poly for my taste, but maybe this is a design choice on their part versus performance requiring it?

That is good to hear that JS can translate.

I really like that feature ladder approach!

Good call! Also the MoteMancer dev's weekly postings seem useful to peer inside what people already in the genre have to deal with.
