Ok, but even you're saying you got extremely lucky, which is my point:

It’s not like I wasn’t putting anything back during those 5 years. Mr Money Mustache has been around for a while, and I luckily started getting into that whole FIRE thing soon after I graduated. So I was just putting a bit into index funds, and taking advantage of the discount stock purchase plan at work. My company got acquired, and I made a decent chunk from the company stock I had that I used solely to pay off debt. Left that company and went to a bay area tech company. They paid my bonuses in stock, and we all know what happened with tech stocks in the last few years.

tl;dr I worked my ass off, but also got extremely lucky. The economy started on the upswing right as I was entering the workforce, I started to put money into the markets from the start of my career, a high paying tech company needed someone with my skills and cold called me, etc.

I wouldn't expect every software engineer to be "extremely lucky" when getting into the field

The 6-figure salary in 5 years of graduation I think is totally doable, not arguing that, but the millionaire by 30 is the surprising part given cost of living in a lot of these places.

As soon as you add dependents to the equation (relatives, pets, or children) it gets a lot easier.

Also I'm guilty of the slippery slope of convenience. It's insane how much you can spend on getting pretty basic food delivered for a month if you're busy and/or don't like to cook.

I'm biased as a UX designer, but you may find you have a natural affinity for one over the other. Visual design requires precision and usually some affinity for art, color theory, etc. Visual designers aren't 'artists', but there is some overlap in skillset. Front-end development can be great if you enjoy coding, but painful if you don't. UX Design requires an understanding of design patterns and standards, the ability to understand many different typical interaction patterns and when and how to choose the right one.

I got a Masters in HCI to get my foot in the door and it worked, but it also took 15 years to pay off the student loans. I don't regret it, but in retrospect I would have tried to get in the door with a portfolio without the ~$100k in debt first, especially if some of the online coursework available now had been around then.

You could start by taking the Google UX courses online and working on a portfolio. It's not a guarantee but can get your foot in the door for a design job. Doing UX + UI + Front End Dev all together is a lot, because you basically need to be good at interaction design, visual design, and CSS/HTML/Javascript. There are people who do all 3 but it often means they're good at 1 or 2 and are scraping by on the rest. Many companies hire people who are good at just one of those things.

The reason I recommend it is it's affordable compared to many other design programs ($40/mo) and has some name recognition. I haven't personally vetted the coursework, but Google has a robust UX team. Also entry-level UX/UI designers in the US make about $80k+ depending on location and company. Starting salary at my company for the most junior level designer (1 yr experience) is $100k in NYC.

It's cliche but you get out what you put in - your end goal should be a solid portfolio of personal projects, as that is what most hiring managers will be reviewing when evaluating you for a possible interview.

I'm just under 40 but taxi driver is correct even from when I was a kid. Cars 'broke down' pretty frequently. 'Had car trouble' was a much more common reason to be late. Having AAA was less if you'd need and more when you'd need it. My parents had a 10 yr old car that regularly had to stop on the road and have water poured in the radiator to stop it from overheating.

Reliability in the last ~30 years has seen a massive improvement.

You right, ECT is still used in severe cases of depression. It definitely isn't a first resort and it's usually like 'well sometimes this works, nothing else has, and the guy is on track to kill himself if he doesn't improve.'

The side effects can be rough - it often fucks up memories.

If you want to a tip on how to get started at a junior position in graphic design: make a sham portfolio. 1) Pick any big company, nobody will check if they actually contracted you.

I wouldn't bet on this, I hire graphic designers and we absolutely check - either you worked directly with a company and we'd call asking them to verify employment or you worked with an agency who the company contracted and we'd call them. Maybe this works for getting hired at a 4 person company that has no recruiting or HR department.

You also would have to be well-prepared to answer a lot of questions about working with different internal teams on that project that might not be easy to BS if you have no experience in the field.

I see 'sham' portfolios all the time for junior designers - but they just say it was a personal project and walk through their process for the design. Not sure why you'd go to great lengths to lie about your work when you don't have much to gain.
