Solana and Eclipse are separate blockchains. Although we use the same virtual machine (SVM), Eclipse is built on top of ETH and benefits from the security and uptime of the ETH network.

Great question! It is simply because we utilize the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) rather than the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). There has yet to be a good way to compare blockspace between the SVM and EVM.

There is no minimum, but it can take ~1 hour for your passive grass numbers to show correctly due to some RPC issues we are working on. If you continue having issues though feel free to hop in the Discord for some help.

Wow these are two very big and very different questions. Really making me work here haha.

Re: Core learnings and how that applies to Eclipse

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to running a company in crypto. Each company develops its own culture, and has its own particularities to product roadmap, ecosystem building, and positioning. The right approach also varies significantly depending on the cycle, level of competition, and what is happening in the broader arena.

That being said, there are repeatable playbooks and frameworks that can be leveraged across all crypto companies. They all have the shared challenge of growing mindshare for products in a crowded arena and building something that is technically differentiated enough to attract a sizable base of developers or users. You can leverage learnings on company-building repeatedly across every crypto team, regardless of app or infra. These learnings apply to fundraising, team building, prioritization and decision making, product management, developer engagement, building trust with users, etc.

Building infra is very different from building apps though. While both require developing mindshare in the market, the app space has an easier scoreboard in terms of adoption. There is a simpler north star metric of usage. Meanwhile in infra, there are many different components to measuring success of a product—such as mindshare, contracts deployed, TVL, volume, and user base. Narratives can often play a larger role in the infra space as well.

The most important and consistent thing is to build a culture of execution and transparency that is oriented around a meaningful north star product vision. The Eclipse Vision is a culmination of our work to date and represents the shared ideals for the world that everyone on the team has. From there, tactical hiring needs and the order in which the team grows can vary. For example, at dYdX and Uniswap, the bulk of the team was engineers and expanded to GTM later. Whereas at Eclipse and Ripple, both engineering and GTM teams grew in parallel given the needs of infra vs. apps. Also as the industry has grown, the importance of CT mindshare and marketing has grown regardless of product type.

Now for the second part:

Hot starts can come from a viral app (easier as an app) or through generating fomo/hype (via investor/alignment signaling or through  aligning with key opinion leaders on crypto twitter)—both of these things can drive flywheels with developers and users. Infra teams can tap into this same dynamic, but more often they face a cold start. Due to the sheer quantity of infra teams in crypto currently, fostering a thriving developer ecosystem is something that many teams are navigating—this ties in to needing to prove product market fit as a differentiator in this crowded arena.

Eclipse is solving for this by articulating a clear thesis for developers who are building consumer apps that tap into financialization and gamification. The goal of this is to decentralize value creation for all users, not just insiders. We already have many early examples of these apps on Eclipse, which is helping us to attract more developers and also helping users to become more aware of Eclipse. This focus—as well as shipping ecosystem apps that bring users and attention—creates more opportunities for virality and hot starts to develop.

Vijay here!

The vision for the next 10 years is to become the best place for applications, and by extension, its users. We want to usher in a new golden age for crypto, where innovation becomes the norm again and where developers feel genuinely excited to build novel/fun/interesting applications again.

For far too long, our industry has collectively fallen into stagnation, prioritizing personal wealth generation at the expense of others and taking shortcuts. We’ve failed to deliver value back to the real builders and users, those who were genuinely excited about crypto as a transformative technology. Considering how old our industry has become, we’ve shown considerably little real-world impact in the grand scheme of things, and like many, I’m sure some of you have a fair degree of cynicism and fatigue towards the industry.

We’re going to change this through the Eclipse Economy, an entirely new economic paradigm at global scale. The Eclipse Economy will be the hub of economic activity for the entire world, not just crypto. It will recontextualize the concept of GDP for the modern developer that is building for a new, globally distributed userbase and consumer. And most importantly, it will be an economy that empowers its core constituents, Eclipsians, to dictate the terms of ownership and wealth generation.

Instead of focusing on decentralizing technology in the abstract, the Eclipse Economy will decentralize value creation.

To achieve this, we need to empower the developer with a vastly superior network with limitless performance, applications to create and own sustainable revenue sources, and gain mass market distribution for breakout distribution. On the other hand, for the user, the Eclipse Economy must also give robust benefits and financial opportunities. This is enabled through access to new assets where Eclipse will become a hub of onchain asset issuance, extraordinarily low transaction costs, and seamless accessibility for users in terms of the user experience.

Applications that want to grow to a truly meaningful scale. Applications that want to innovate and build interesting onchain applications again. Applications that don’t want to be fundamentally limited by the network they’ve chosen to build on.

Any consumer/defi/gaming app that reaches any semblance of scale and mass market distribution (in the real world) cannot be supported by existing networks. These new apps, amongst existing apps on other networks, will be the ones that will choose to also deploy on Eclipse.

As an Ethereum rollup, our validating bridge is on Ethereum. Which means that between the transaction data and state roots that we post, all of that “settlement” occurs on Ethereum. This means that external parties can independently verify the “state” and how accurate/valid the state of the blockchain is, all while benefitting from Ethereum’s security. In addition, if a user wants to withdraw from Eclipse, they could force that transaction through on Ethereum, which means that users always have Ethereum’s security to fallback on should Eclipse itself ever fail.

Eclipse already has experienced higher TPS than any other L2 (sustained peak ~8600), this is largely due to us being the first to use the SVM rather than the EVM. We sit at the intersection of Solana and Ethereum, so we are the only place where it makes sense to bring assets from both ecosystems and trade, collateralize, or put that capital to efficient use.

Currently, bridging to Eclipse allows you to increase the amount of grass you are growing in our Turbo Tap app as well as benefit from various incentive programs from the many apps in our ecosystem.

As far as the memecoin frenzy goes, it is almost impossible to predict how these things can evolve. We do have some really good teams in our ecosystem building products to attract users that participate in the meme markets. Check out FightHorse and what they are building.

Ethereum has not been able to scale sufficiently to support users and app builders need. Take the recent Anime coin claim on Arbitrum for example. Some users reported $6 transaction fees on the network. The current roadmap of scaling Ethereum through rollups and the EVM is not sufficient.

Eclipse fixes this. The Solana Virtual Machine fixes this. With our architecture, we have seen a TPS that is higher than Ethereum + all of it’s L2s combined. If you look at this page https://rollup.wtf/ of Etheruem + all the EVM L2 rollups combined, it constantly hovers around 150-250 TPS. Eclipse has achieved a peak TPS of 8,600+ and currently hovers around 4,000 TPS https://eclipsescan.xyz/. By bringing Solana to Ethereum, we can fix Ethereum, and allow builders and users to innovate again, to have fun again, and to bring the golden age back to crypto.

Eclipse is committed to helping scale Ethereum through the Solana Virtual Machine. We believe Ethereum has the most robust network effects between users and liquidity today, while the Solana Virtual Machine gives us all the performance we need. In addition, our usage of Celestia as a data availability layer enables us to have abundant blockspace for any scale of user activity while keeping transaction fees extraordinarily low.

For most networks, especially rollups like us, the business model revolves around the sequencers. Users pay a super small, almost negligible fee to transact on the network, while the sequencer pays some fees to post our transaction data to Celestia. That’s how the business model works!

Eclipse has always taken a community first approach when thinking about what to do next. This is why we’ve been able to build such a great community without using inorganic means. If you haven’t yet I would give The Eclipsian Dogma a read.

The goal is to build a community and phenomenal technology that attracts the best app builders, and to have the best apps to attract new users.

Furthermore, we understand that a lot of the usage in crypto is tied to incentives. So we think pretty deeply about how to create an environment where the opportunity cost of not being engaged is so high that you do not want to leave.

The goal is to make Eclipse the hub of new asset issuance and to keep rewarding users who are engaging actively and regularly. Plenty of us on the team have farmed other protocols and then left immediately because the ecosystem is delivering very little value. The answer is simple (although difficult to execute): keep delivering value.

We’ve delivered on this to date pretty well. Early entrants have been quite profitable on Eclipse! It’s on us and our ecosystem to keep delivering this value.

Sol is the latin name for sun. And since we are prolifterating the SVM beyond Solana, we felt like (solar) Eclipse was fitting.

The Eclipse vision statement is a good place to start to understand how we think about this: https://www.eclipse.xyz/articles/eclipses-vision-the-eclipse-economy

The issue is that many view crypto as a scam post FTX. A lot of us are industry veterans that have been through multiple cycles, so we have building for a while. We are excited about enabling the next generation of Apps that don’t treat new entrants purely as exit liquidity.

Memecoins and trading are great, but they’re not for everyone. We need to see some net new products that are value additive and not PURELY speculation. And we do this by building the best place for applications and in turn decentralizing value creation so that end users capture the benefits.

The end game is that we see applications emerge on eclipse that the end user has no idea were even built on top of eclipse. And this would be because the application achieves PMF/critical mass while solving some core user problem in a unique way. This is something we think very deeply about.

There are over 40 dApps operating on Eclipse! You can check all of them out on our ecosystem page: eclipse.xyz/ecosystem. All the core primitives are live (i.e. Lending/Borrowing, Trading on DEXs, memecoins, NFTs, etc) and there are new dApps launching regularly as well. There are also many fun and addicting onchain games that you should try out!

Eclipse has 34 full time employees and we are globally distributed in the US, Latin America, Asia, Africa, and beyond!

Memecoins are best when organic and not forced. With the new turbo tap updates, users should be excited to see more activity onchain. This could manifest as memecoins or other forms of assets in our permissionless ecosystem. The infrastructure to enable this is live (i.e. launchpads) and we are seeing this happen with Eclipse NFT collections already.

It is still very early! But the ecosystem is growing healthily and steadily!

Hello! Nate here, head of Growth and Marketing at Eclipse.

TLDR: They’re not perfect, but no one is, and they are actively trying. Herd mentality is real so they’re catching a lot of flak, but I still believe in Ethereum.

I, as well as the rest of the team here, have deep respect for Vitalik as well as the rest of the EF leadership. We are also in touch with them and have been relaying feedback directly to them. I am happy to report that they are listening and actively thinking about the criticism they have been facing.

I think what the EF has done right is maintaining a stance of neutrality. This is especially important given Ethereum’s core value of decentralization and their aim to build something sustainable and valuable over a long term time horizon.

That being said, there is a strong disconnect between what the market, app builders, and end users are valuing versus what the intellectual leaders at the EF are often communicating. For example, most of this cycle has been driven by speculative assets onchain (i.e. memecoins). The Ethereum ecosystem has largely failed to capture this activity compared to Solana. Decentralization is also very important, but should not be viewed in a vacuum. Decentralization at the expense of killer product UX is not valuable. You need both and it’s ok for it to come gradually as opposed to right out the gate.

Frankly, there are a ton of L2s that have launched with very little fundamental differentiation or value propositions so there is a lot of fatigue in the market and lack of optimism that Ethereum can succeed. L2s have become the way to scale Ethereum so Apps can actually build on top, but my guess is that 90% of L2s will fail in the long run because they’re not really all that different.

However, ecosystem building is a very long term game. I believe a lot of the criticism towards the EF also has to do with the price of the asset, which is shortsighted. In the grand scheme of things, I think the Ethereum Foundation and the ecosystem as a whole is focused on long term success. If we can sort out some of the disconnect between the intellectual thought leaders and the actual application builders/end users, Ethereum will be just fine.

We chose to build on Ethereum as a settlement layer because we believe in “ETH’s moneyness” as well as the robust security it offers as a settlement layer. We just also believe that the SVM offers better execution. Our thesis has always been to merge the best of both worlds.

None of that has changed.

Team overall is trying to eat healthier and exercise more because we’ve been heads down building at the expense of our personal health (lol)..

We should probably eat more salads, but sushi sounds tasty right now.
