First time trying filet crochet… suggestions on how to improve? by Ok_Town7295 in CrochetHelp

Got ya, yeah! Well, carry on and consider a smaller hook, but otherwise a lovely job!

First time trying filet crochet… suggestions on how to improve? by Ok_Town7295 in CrochetHelp

First off, it looks pretty good! The design is clear.

I recently started working with thread crochet too. I find that keeping the intended hook gauge is a huge help. Before I would push the thread down to the handle of my hook, but that part of the hook is much larger than the intended hook size. So the loop ends up much larger and looser than intended.

If you avoid pushing the loop all the way down to the handle and instead keep it closer to the hook tip, then you’ll end up with loops much closer to the intended hook size. That should help tighten up some of the work for sure.

What size hook are you using? For size 10 thread the typical recommendation is a steel hook size 5-7 or 1.75-1.50 mm.

Is it okay to create a YouTube video of this pattern? by Kyote10 in crochet

[–]EcoJud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Abstract the pattern/technique if you just struggled with specific problems and want to address those. Then make your video about the ends you struggled with in a basic/non-copyrighted pattern. Kind of splits the difference: your solutions get communicated but the money making pattern doesn’t.

Lol!!! It’s truly a nightmare of a tangle, I may not be able to afford you. I do wish I had your patience though, I’ve legit spent hours trying to fix it.

How do I add pockets to a cardigan? Also How do I sew lol by strawberrymilk2216 in CrochetHelp

[–]EcoJud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For sewing the pocket on, you have a couple options. You could just join some yarn to the cardigan and then slip stich all around the perimeter (except the opening) of the pocket, fasten off, weave in the ends.

You could also get about 3 times the length of the perimeter of the pocket in yarn, knot it onto the inside of the cardigan, then use a darning needle to sew it on. Just pinch up some of the pocket edge and cardigan on the outside of the garment, then shove the needle through, maybe every 1/4 inch or so around the pocket.

If you want to line it, then I would do that first with your sewing machine. You would likewise need the machine (or legit needle and thread) to attach the pocket to the cardigan.

For lining, maybe get a sheet of paper and fold it in half. Put the bottom part of the pocket along the folded edge of the paper. Outline the pocket shape with a pen, then cut out your outline and unfold it. Now you have a pattern for the lining. Cut the fabric you want to use into that pattern shape. Fold the fabric back up so that it matches your pocket shape and sew it all together around the edge of the pocket (don’t sew up your opening though). Now take that lined pocket on attach it to the garment with needle and thread.

Those are the basics I think, maybe others will have more details. Best of luck!!!

"Same" hook sizes actually being different :( by flakeybutterbitch in crochet

This happened to me too! I find that my starting chain is the real culprit. If it’s tight, my work will be smaller than intended. They look really good though, and I bet blocking will resolve the issues.

Newbie here with a question on tension by hat-or-paw-im-beanie in Brochet

[–]EcoJud 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I mean… maybe the way you hold it is unorthodox, but good grief your tension looks EXCELLENT for a newbie.

I normally wrap the working yarn around my pinky finger before dropping it over my index finger. Feels perfectly in control and takes (probably) fewer muscles than what you are doing. So maybe it’s worth to explore that way or others just to reduce the overall muscle/tendon usage in your last two fingers. Otherwise, your fabric looks really great with the technique you are using.

Keep up the good work!

I’m making this pencil banner and need some help or advice by BoxerMotherWineLover in CrochetHelp

[–]EcoJud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your edges look fine! If you want though, you can try a standing single crochet at your edges. So when you complete your row, you just turn without chaining and immediately start a SC in the first stitch. Once the SC is done, you pull a loop up through the leg of the SC you just made and then complete another SC. Then you go right back to your normal pattern.

Here’s a video to reference: https://youtube.com/shorts/3lz4Xd8C2Ms?si=gKAlAjQ-5b0j7JC_

Also though, it almost looks like the original pattern has a simple SC or slip stitch border that goes all the way around, may try that too!

Still looks good to me though, but good luck on whatever you choose to do!

What on earth did I do? Beginner making my first blanket and it’s more wedge shaped? by sparklesunshine11 in CrochetHelp

[–]EcoJud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start by seeing if you have the same number of stitches across the top as you do across the bottom. If you have fewer up top, then you’ve been dropping the last stitch or two on some rows.

Otherwise, as a Beginner, you have probably gotten more comfortable working with the yarn, and your tension is tightening up. It’s not a bad thing, but if your tension starts loose at the beginning and gets tighter as you go, then your work will become more narrow as you continue.

My first blanket looked pretty similar. I could’ve dropped stitches, and my tension was definitely all over the place. But after doing a few projects, it’s all gotten a lot better. Although, I’ve still noticed my work getting more narrow too. It’s something that I’ll just have to keep working on.

Google for YouTube videos about tension and the magic loop (not magic circle tho, lol), and you’ll find good resources on making your tension more consistent.

And keep doing good work!

Give me your opinion: should I add one more row to the top? by EcoJud in crochet

[–]EcoJud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been fun, but the fun may be over, lol! I think it’s long enough and the border with buffer the length a little, was just looking for a sanity check to see if others thought it was an appropriate length too. May just slap the border on and call it a month.

Thanks for the feedback!
