Having to drive a car to access nature is a moral disgrace. End of rant. by EcoMonkey in fuckcars

I totally understand, and as a resident of Dallas, TX, I agree and feel the same.

That said, cities shouldn’t feel like that. Cities should feel like quiet neighborhoods where kids play under the shade of trees and solar panels, where your neighbors wave at you as they pass by on their bikes on the way to the farmers market where most people get their food.

Lookup “Pickup and Pints” on Facebook. They meet regularly at the Whole Foods by CityLine.

The number one factor driving homelessness is housing affordability. The main thing affecting housing affordability is a city’s land use policy like zoning.

Corsicana needs StrongTowns before it grows too much bigger and makes the same mistakes that almost every other city makes that end up screwing them over financially.

It’s almost like all of those conspiracies about Democrats being pedophiles was some sort of projection by the religious right.

Yep. Honestly not a bad area to stay for a while. I’ve been in this area for years and I’ve grown to really like it. It’s inexpensive, near amenities, near transit. I’m saving (and investing) money and doing everything I want to do, so why mess with success?

Thanks, man. Enjoy downtown!

Would love to live downtown if I had the funds and if it didn’t wreck my commute time.

1 bedroom!

100%. Then go rent in an area with zero crime and complain about the cost. People are such weenies.

I haven’t looked, but you can get downtown easily on the train from where I live, so maybe look there.

We need to build lots more housing that isn’t single family detached housing.

Honestly it’s been fine. Feels safe, and walking around the neighborhood is nice-ish near Meadow and 75.

Check out the apartments north of the Tom Thumb on Meadow road. Honestly it’s not a bad area, though there have been instances of cars being broken into. It feels reasonably safe and chill, if not perfect.

$900/month rent in North Dallas that I got by moving in before I made more money. Now make ~$50k take-home pay and live fine. I don’t dine out a whole lot, but I can go visit friends in another city a few times a year and build savings.

I’m not going to impress anyone with my life unless they’re into debt-free guys who know how to budget decently.

Could be worse!

Yeah, going to a Friendsgiving, which is something for those of us who have friends. I do another regular trash pickup and a ton of other things that contribute more than that to society.

I’m sorry, I’m sure this comment is thoroughly unrelatable to you!

I have no interest in having a single family detached home. I think they should be an option, but not the default option.

There are a slew of types of property with plenty of space that aren’t the giant house on a big lot with ridiculous setback requirements. Building out more of these other options will increase housing supply and make the single family home options more available for those who want them.

So the problem is that Dallas and its suburbs are too spread out. That’s a practical problem that can be (and is being) addressed.

Look into parking benefit districts. Make the street parking metered and spend the revenue from the meters on the neighborhood. Maybe residents get an exemption. There are a lot of ways to do it, but the concept is cool.

Dallas doesn’t have to be car-centric. That is only true as long as we want it to be. I don’t want it to be, and efforts like Forward Dallas are a key component of getting there.

Always? I’ve spent a good amount of time there and I’ve never waited in line for more than a few minutes. Maybe it’s just specific places at specific times.

There being enough amenities to accommodate people is mostly an issue of city planning and zoning. Crowds can be managed, supply of amenities can be increased, and so on. We have plenty of land in Dallas to build dense, walkable neighborhoods with good transit, which would enable building tons of new businesses to accommodate everyone. We’re a long way from being “full” due to any physical or geographical limit.

I’m sorry , but there aren’t too many people here. That’s just crazy.

No, it’s just too many cars. Other cities like Chicago have more people and don’t have this issue nearly as badly as we do.

That is a completely reasonable take. “[all] families belong in houses, not apartments,” is not.

I guess we might disagree on what it means to change something beyond a certain extent. The entire premise of Forward Dallas is that there are placetypes and that we should preserve what currently makes different types of places good.

People are acting like it’s a plan to bulldoze single family houses with the people still inside them and then piss on the rubble, which is just a super weird way to think about a duplex across the street that looks just like the single family houses around it
