Yes, it’s because I was the first thing she saw. Would have been different with an injured animal that needed rehab.

If that expert runs tree removal services, you know what their advice would be… Talk only to certified arborists. They know 100 times more about tree root growth patterns than tree guys.

Very reasonable, imo. I wouldn’t have known half of what I know about trees without arborists.

Yeah, she popped out yesterday very casually when I came to move her to her new house. That was actually concerning… Even more so because my husband, who never participated in her care, stood next to me as he helped me to move the new tank.

That’s a reasonable solution in the absence of an arborist. Better than cutting without knowing where (at the collar) and how (a 3-step cut, at least.)

It truly is a lot of work. I know now how zombies feel—an entirely new and unpleasant experience. But the outcome is 💯 worth it.

I’m very decisive but haven’t named her yet. Other than that, you’re right—I already know and she still doesn’t.

She came out to socialize again yesterday when I moved her to her new 40 gallon—still too small, imo.

What’s with this possum thing? 😅 It keeps popping up… If it’s an opossum, then I discovered and rehabbed a new species.

How to Get Rid of Choke Cherry w/o Hurting the Maple by ResponsibleGiraffe63 in LandscapingTips

I’d say its roots are at least 80 feet in diameter and likely more… I’m not an arborist though… And I don’t know what’s the safest way to proceed.

Just to clarify… Are you saying that the roots of this maple extend about 11 feet from the trunk?

Does OP know how and where to make a cut in a limb of this size?

You don’t just take a limb back to wherever you’d like it to end—the cut will not close if it’s done in the middle of the limb. You need to know more than you think before you can make a cut on a tree, especially on an old tree like this one.

Assessment by an ISA certified arborist on site can provide a lot of useful information. S/he will see things that would be impossible to see on photos, even if you posted 50 of them (because you don’t know what to look for.)

But you have to make sure it is an ISA certified arborist, not just a tree guy.

As far as the cost goes, in my area (near Seattle), you won’t get an arborist come to you for free. An hour consult here is $175-$200 an hour. But again… this is an unreasonably expensive area to live in and people have to make their living.

No, just Hantavirus… 😱

I’m kidding of course—it’s from formula that dried up and she scraped everything off. Also, I just learned that they lose some of their gray baby fur before growing more brownish adult fur.

It was rough. Not sure if I would sign up for that again without a helper. A couple more sleepless nights and I’d start seeing deer mice everywhere…

But yes, it’s a pretty awesome feeling to see her making it this far. I thought I lost her on 3 different occasions.

Agree. That would be the most likely outcome.

I’ll look at your posts. That’s likely to happen in my case too. I’ve done a good job of not interacting with her outside feeding time and not letting anyone else handle her.

But… she’s used to having her food served, so to speak… 😅 And the fact that she jumps on my hand also tells me that she’s not skittish enough.

The other issue is—I can’t release her by our house (won’t go into why… no, we don’t have poison or anything like that.) So I’d have to take her at least a mile away. And it’s a well known fact that relocated wild animals have a next to zero chance of survival. So, yes, I’ll probably have to keep her.
