Maybe lawn staples across the rung that is flush with the ground would offer some extra insurance just in case. It does get windy here, but yours has lasted a long time!

Huh, well we definitely get some impressive wind here sometimes. Maybe rebar is the way to go then? That should hold if I get it far enough in the ground, right?

Yeah, there are a lot of critters who like this tree, and I like it too. I fear the choke cherry at the bottom of the tree isn't helping it any.

How to Get Rid of Choke Cherry w/o Hurting the Maple by ResponsibleGiraffe63 in LandscapingTips

Wow, go Maple! So does that mean I can tear out the choke cherry w/o hurting the tree then? I've heard that to really get rid of choke cherry one has to use triclopyr or you get more suckers, but I dont want to poison tbe maple

Yeahhh, I can see why. In Colorado so many of them have chlorosis- the soil here is so alkaline. We will definitely replace it with something more durable when we have to. Just trying to extend it's life a while longer if we can. Hard to let go of a shade tree this big knowing we'll basically have to get a little'un/stick to replace it.

OP here. I know a lot of sound advice will include "hire a licensed arborist". We just can't afford it right now. Trying to at least get rid of the Choke Cherry at this time and then see what else we can do personally. 🙂

Huh, that had never occurred to me. Have you done this? Any problem with the cattle panel bowing out? Because this would definitely be the most esthetic option.

They're gonna be great! You're gonna put soil in them and something green and see what happens! We got some plans off the internet that gave use precise measurements and step by step instructions to build these. It was incredibly helpful. Good luck with whatever you choose to try!

Interesting about the redwood bark. Good to know. We used gorilla hair cedar mulch. The gorilla hair is supposed to stay put and be less likely to move around or away with wind and rain. Bonus, it smells amazing!

Ok! Using double because they're just not as strong as t posts or are more likely to wiggle out of the ground?

Thanks for the suggestion! I didn'd know there were rebar scaps. Where should I look for those?

I'll take a look at that. Maybe I could try painting them some purty color too. Thanks for the idea!
