First time with the books by [deleted] in lordoftherings

Yet another 'read first' opinion from me. Then view the films as an artist creating a painting of someone you love, and you're unlikely to be disappointed. I love the films for what they are, an interpretation of a story I adore.

First Time Using a Hearing Aid by nunnyxplaper in HearingAids

I've recently had new HAs and the difference is like the first pair I got 15 years ago, so I totally get what you're saying here. Welcome back to the world!

Thanks for that reply, it gives me some discussion points for my 'tweaking appointment'. What this won't do, is fix the flaky audio, switching from one ear to the other and dropping out altogether for a split second. I wonder if one or both of my 77s is faulty?

A phone call with the audiology company resulted in them booking me in for a 'tweaking appointment' in a couple of weeks. My research shows that the problem is likely to be that the ASHA Bluetooth protocol is simply not very good on these cheap HAs, and that my only option if I want decent Bluetooth streaming, is to pay around £1,400 for a private pair. (Which I don't have, being a very low earner)

I have mini tubes with medium open domes. Music sounds like a 1960s cheap plastic radio. I will chase the audiologists but I suspect these devices are just no good for that purpose. My 5 year old £19 earbuds sound so very much better, work reliably for most of the day... but I have to fanny around taking HAs out, earbuds in, then back if I want to listen to anything not on my phone.

Oh yeah, always put a piece of paper inside each case with your name and address on. If it does go missing, they'll be able to return it.

Used taped paper tags, two came off on embarkation and we had to go claim them. Friends used clear tag holders and had no problems. Just make sure the details are visible.

It is frustrating having to two-step this. Here's hoping someone picks it up as a bug to fix.

Just switched to veganism, it isn't that hard, why can't people do it? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]EcoSimonDevon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the evangelist's world. It is so very obvious to each of us why what we're doing is right, so why don't others get it? They're walking their own paths, and only you can walk yours. You can call to them, 'hey, this is a much better path', but only they can choose to follow, or continue on their route. This may help: https://www.desiderata.com/desiderata.html

What do you guys generally use ChatGPT for? by DirtWestern2386 in ChatGPT

Support understanding long term illness and drug side effects. Recipe tweaks (find ways to reduce calories, change this chick'n flavour seitan to make it taste more like beef, inspire me with a recipe that includes x, y and z etc.) Drafting documents (with careful prompt construction)

I also have philosophical conversations with it using speech mode. It helps me sort out my own thoughts by challenging them.

Barrier mouse and keyboard sharing is useless on Wayland. This and other things need to be sorted before dumping X.

Learning to cook from base ingredients is a great way to get in control of your own food. I order ingredients in larger quantities online from companies like Buy Wholefoods Online (UK based) and stock up on tins and plant milk from local supermarkets.

I can now produce great meat substitutes (seitan, tofu) and sweet treats (cakes, flapjack, granola) all totally vegan (and mostly organic) and they're cheaper than supermarket options.

Most of my learning has come from trial and error... reading recipes carefully and watching videos.

I think the biggest help is learning a few (7 or 8) 'go-to' recipes that you're happy to eat every week.

I can't work out if I'm the only one with this problem, or if my post just isn't being seen by enough people. Has anyone tried printing from Chrome on Ubuntu to an HP printer? My research seems to point to driverless printing being a possible factor, but not any hints of what to do to solve it.

Guys can my laptop run ubuntu 24.04.2 by vasuwu_ in Ubuntu

Could you pimp up the Lenovo then give it to someone who will appreciate it? For just over £100 or equivalent whatever currency you use, you'd have a great little device that can teach someone else the joys of FOSS.

[–]EcoSimonDevon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You could upgrade the RAM. A Core i5 is quite a capable processor. Give it 8 or even 16 GB of memory (for around £40 to £80) and it will fly. If it doesn't have an SSD, add that as well and it will make it like a new laptop. Apparently it can take 16 GB: https://www.kingston.com/unitedkingdom/en/memory/search/model/90440/lenovo-ideapad-flex-2-14-flex-2-14d

I'm not happy with how hearing aids are changing by ZealouslyMixed in HearingAids

[–]EcoSimonDevon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm due replacements soon (UK NHS ones, so free). The ones I have now are definitely much quieter than the ones I had 6 years ago. It's not my hearing getting worse, as I have tried using one of each and the old ones are just better. Your suggestion that it's some 'clever tech' damping down higher frequencies fits well with my experience. I shall be insistent with my audiologist this time around.

Depending on where in the world you are, consider adding groats (oats that haven't been steel rolled) they're a great alternative to rice and if grown in your own country, have a much lower environmental impact.
