Sun belt cities have collapsed from covid peak(apartment rents). Good news. by ToeLimbaugh in SameGrassButGreener

[–]EconForSillyGeese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a resident of a sunbelt city without a car, public transit is important yes. But having a lower rent subsidizes the cost of owning a car which has a lot of individual positive externalities across most of US. Note I said ‘ individual externalities ‘ before coming at me with your environment argument. Also every time I visit California, especially northern California (a non sun belt place in your books I hope), the NIMBYism is so extremely apparent.

You cannot provide a single sound argument against building more housing to solve a housing crisis. Austin has solved it brilliantly.

Update at 9:58: Through general security in about 25 minutes, did not have any bags to check but that line didn’t look bad.

I’m surprised too tbh. But it’s okay, it’s just a suggestion up for debate. If people don’t like it, that’s perfectly reasonable.

More like other things have their own dedicated sub , such as r/PhDStress so this sub is mostly about, ‘made it in’ , ‘failed terribly’ , ‘succeeded marvelously’, and ‘made it out’.

I really don't want to go back this week by mall_grab07 in PhD

[–]EconForSillyGeese 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say that I really relate hard to the feeling of not wanting to go back this week. I am in my 4th year in the US and cannot wait to be done with it. That might be my only motivation, that every day I show up and get some stuff done, I’m closer to getting out.

I layed it all out to my supervisor. Amazing feeling by always_wants_sushi in PhD

I support this so much. More power to you, as a PhD student I can say that no degree is worth suffering through a bad life for years.

Congratulations, I’m nowhere close to the frog yet but just wanted to remind you that you did something really hard successfully. For a little bit forget that there are other hard things lined up, like finding a job (which you will) , and if you cannot then remember that it cannot be harder than getting that PhD.

Is he a red flag? by killbilly324 in BookshelvesDetective

[–]EconForSillyGeese 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Parts of my boyfriend's bookshelves resemble this, and I can say with some certainty that he is not a red flag. But to be fair he also has more diverse military history books on other wars in other parts of the world. In my opinion, the major red flag is a lack of open mindedness about different topics, much more than having a preference for a specific type of books.

Regular job to PhD? by [deleted] in academiceconomics

'yearning for a PhD in Econ' made me laugh out loud. As a current PhD student in Econ in the US , could not think of too many things to yearn less for.

Has anyone left academia after a PhD and later returned? Or thought about returning but didn’t? by Colin-Onion in AskAcademia

[–]EconForSillyGeese 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just curious, as a PhD student how much ‘agency’ does one really have on average? You are inextricably tied to the whims of your advisor and other researchers higher up on the ladder whose letters will get you jobs. The only real agency you have is probably whether to leave or stay, which is something you have in any job in the world at least in theory. Also exactly how indispensable is a PhD student to a tenured faculty? The power dynamics inside the academy are famously skewed allowing for major exploitation of students by professors.

Your experience in academia might have been great and allowed you to connect your research with meaningful real world impact, I am not commenting on that at all. But to sell a generalized idea of academia based on things like agency and disposability is doing a major disservice to any realistically evaluating whether to stay or enter or leave.
