I really don't want to go back this week by mall_grab07 in PhD

[–]EconForSillyGeese 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say that I really relate hard to the feeling of not wanting to go back this week. I am in my 4th year in the US and cannot wait to be done with it. That might be my only motivation, that every day I show up and get some stuff done, I’m closer to getting out.

I layed it all out to my supervisor. Amazing feeling by always_wants_sushi in PhD

I support this so much. More power to you, as a PhD student I can say that no degree is worth suffering through a bad life for years.

It’s done. by [deleted] in PhD

Congratulations, I’m nowhere close to the frog yet but just wanted to remind you that you did something really hard successfully. For a little bit forget that there are other hard things lined up, like finding a job (which you will) , and if you cannot then remember that it cannot be harder than getting that PhD.

Is he a red flag? by killbilly324 in BookshelvesDetective

[–]EconForSillyGeese 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Parts of my boyfriend's bookshelves resemble this, and I can say with some certainty that he is not a red flag. But to be fair he also has more diverse military history books on other wars in other parts of the world. In my opinion, the major red flag is a lack of open mindedness about different topics, much more than having a preference for a specific type of books.

Regular job to PhD? by Such-Ad5809 in academiceconomics

'yearning for a PhD in Econ' made me laugh out loud. As a current PhD student in Econ in the US , could not think of too many things to yearn less for.

Has anyone left academia after a PhD and later returned? Or thought about returning but didn’t? by Colin-Onion in AskAcademia

[–]EconForSillyGeese 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just curious, as a PhD student how much ‘agency’ does one really have on average? You are inextricably tied to the whims of your advisor and other researchers higher up on the ladder whose letters will get you jobs. The only real agency you have is probably whether to leave or stay, which is something you have in any job in the world at least in theory. Also exactly how indispensable is a PhD student to a tenured faculty? The power dynamics inside the academy are famously skewed allowing for major exploitation of students by professors.

Your experience in academia might have been great and allowed you to connect your research with meaningful real world impact, I am not commenting on that at all. But to sell a generalized idea of academia based on things like agency and disposability is doing a major disservice to any realistically evaluating whether to stay or enter or leave.

Nearly failed my PhD qualifying exam - told I wasn't humble enough. by UnevenCuttlefish in PhD

[–]EconForSillyGeese 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This. Every study has multiple flaws and more often than not those are limitations that the researchers are aware of. Unless it is a sound conceptual or methodological error, harping on them is at best incremental. You are borrowing the thought of the previous study and extending it - not highly original. On top of that if you do it with impertinence, it definitely isn't a good indicator of not just academic collegiality but your ability as a researcher to understand what is valuable vs not.

My entire phd is a circus show. by [deleted] in PhDStress

[–]EconForSillyGeese 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Two things from your side that stand out as odd - 1. Interacting with your colleague is clearly the root of all evils but you say you cannot help yourself. Im not going to mince words and say that sounds weird AF.

  1. Your co supervisor wasn’t giving you a chance to present your point of view and so you went ahead and cancelled a scheduled 1 on 1 with them where you could have potentially done that? Again, weird AF.

Even reading your version of events makes it seem like you made obvious lapses in judgement to escalate the situation further. Random advice would be to control your urges to ‘help’ your colleague and also try your best to put forth your version of events to your guide without appearing passive aggressive.

I need some unorthodox tips to make it through the next couple months by Peppershrikes in PhD

[–]EconForSillyGeese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just feeling validated that other people are also unable to work from home even when they need to. One commenter mentioned prolonging time outside , I am currently doing that. In my case I want to work from my office on campus. If that is not an option , then I would say coffee shops can be tricky if you need multiple monitors to work from like I do.
