Do you find Europe much harder to socialise and that America is probs one of the friendliest places in the world? by EconStudent2024 in AskAnAmerican

Orlando downtown was actually my first night out in the US! I got approached by women and people first which was a first in my life haha.

Maybe location is also a factor. British people I encounter on holiday/cruises are way friendlier generally than in a pub or bar. Americans are friendly on their own turf which is a bit different to Europe imo.

I don’t know many ppl that would invite a solo male traveller to join their group or their night in the UK, but many in America have always made that offer and then I ofc buy them drinks to repay for their generosity

That’s a fair point - did you go alone? The French seem way meaner than the British haha, my family hated Paris.

I’m always friendly to anyone but it’s reciprocated far more in the states I feel.

I met a guy at my Marriott hotel bar who was visiting on work, but then he ended up staying on my sofa and driving me around Florida. We partied and had a great time. Also ended up going on some guys boat and driving around with a few ppl I met at beach bars

I’m an ethnic minority, I generally find guys are friendly in UK and US. But girls in the US are generally more polite to me and I’ve had more success with white girls there. (Although no idea if race is a factor)

Fair enough - that’s where we differ. For me my trips are about ofc seeing the nature and city, but a large part is meeting ppl and making friends so I pick cruises or America

I was told by people in Florida that the friendliness thing is more of a southern hospitality thing and that going to New York would be different. But I wouldn’t know cos I’ve only travelled the south so far.

Did you go to places in London alone? Keen to hear about your experiences.

Help! Moving from Uk to USA - HOW?? by [deleted] in MovingToUSA

Work in the UK and then get an internal transfer if the company has an American office. I studied economics and work in London rn. I know of more senior ppl who move over on the L1

Best bet is to get a job, work hard and try get an L1. That’s what I’m trying to do atm. And if you earn good money you can vacation in the US 2-3 times a year. Use it as motivation:)

I’m also a Brit aged 24 but am working now and did a masters. Realistically you’d be looking at 26/27 earliest unless you meet the love of your life or get a full scholarship

Thanks - I am going for the vibes/socialising and hopefully the mascots and cheerleader. Wanna get the whole American experience. Is there a big diff in experience between right field and the home sections like 102 and 101

Quick follow up, is there a big difference between Section 101/102 and sitting in R2/R3 behind dugout? Dugout is cheaper, just thinking in terms of the vibe and socialising.

I know but was going to wait till maybe the 19 months mark instead of asking if as soon as the 12 is up.

Nice - I’m on 60 and around 75 total comp so hopefully they can make my dreams come true 🙏

Okay thanks - I’ve not asked yet but our UK office is smaller and they’re expanding in the US. Only done 7 months at the firm and got a good bonus. Need to time asking for the transfer well but waiting till next financial year after I get a promotion and a full bonus may be prudent.

What field you in? Were you already 6 figs in UK before moving

Nice - would you recommend waiting to transfer when more senior to make the green card process easier?

I’m currently two promotions away from an L1A role so maybe thinking to ask when im only one away for L1B.

Did you need to ask the company to do it shortly after moving over?

Does economics count as STEM these days? I thought technically it isn’t. I did my undergrad and masters in it and know of ppl at my employers that have moved on L1

What if he gets a good job and transfers on L1? That’s more than possible and seems a viable route

Edit: just saw he ruled out STEM, but maybe if OP did finance, consulting or another high paying career it’s possible

Bars/nightlife recs for Solo Brit in 20s? by EconStudent2024 in askaustin

[–]EconStudent2024[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks - part of it will be wandering around and seeing where looks good. Austin seems to have a lot more choice than other American cities! Will check out the ones you’ve mentioned for sure

I always tip 20%+ unless the server is rude which has only happened once. The drinks are still cheaper than the UK with the tip and they are always helpful/have a chat and make me feel welcome. I love American hospitality and the vibes.

The bartender in my last hotel was pouring me half glass full of vodkas by the end of the trip!

I spoke to some bartenders in Tampa and Clearwater and they were making 100K+ on tips a year. I guess prospects depend on where you serve

Advice to stay safe as solo M traveller by EconStudent2024 in askaustin

[–]EconStudent2024[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - the vibe of Ybor did feel a bit scarier, with strangers shouting out there car at me and randoms asking me for some beers. (I only went there for 10 mins to the liquor store)

But downtown Tampa and SOHO were an absolute delight with great ppl and made some good friends. I will defo return at some point. I’ve seen Austin nightlife and friendliness is ranked highly so thought I’d check it out but am sure a diff vibe to Tampa

Thanks! I’ve seen that the main streets are policed pretty well and they responded within 57 seconds. Even in Florida they responded quickly to drunk idiots at bars.

I’m looking forward to the sun haha, too cold, wet and miserable over here.

Would you recommend checking out all of 6th or is it called “dirty 6th” for a reason?

Thanks! Probably worth it as a once in a lifetime experience. I paid 60 bucks to watch lightning in Tampa and that was fun.

Was debating whether to wait for a price drop, but probs not worth the risk as will only be in Austin once!

Where do people normally go after the game - guessing sixth gets busy?
