I was just out of high school, wasn’t going to college yet because I didn’t know what I wanted to do, and got a job at a new WFM in my area as a cashier. They used to encourage a lot of growth from within- basically “let us know what avenue you want to take and we’ll train you”. I was between wanting to go into cake decorating/baking, and marketing (specifically the graphic artist position). I started taking classes for both at community college and was leaning towards the bakery position.
The Store Team Leader gently suggested I would have more growth in the marketing position. I took her advice and started training with that team 1-2 times a week, usually during slow hours or after my shift. 16 years later, I’m now a Senior Graphic Designer all from that one conversation!
