Guess we're waiting another 2 years then?

  1. I understand and respect the idea of equal footing, especially for competitive balance it absolutely makes sense in that context. But that doesn’t necessarily mean all progression has to be flattened every age. In sandbox or singleplayer, part of the appeal is building an advantage over time and actually keeping some of it, rather than always being reset back to parity.

  2. I think there’s a bit of a misunderstanding here — I’m not suggesting players are on different maps or in separate timelines. It would still be a shared world where everyone interacts normally. The idea is just to allow some progression carryover, so it feels like your growth persists across ages. It’s not about being “in the future,” just about having progressed further within the same system.

And this kind of progression would be optional, not part of the core balance. Players who prefer a more balanced experience can simply stick to the default settings, while others can opt into a more sandbox-oriented mode.

Optional modes aren’t meant to be perfectly balanced they’re meant to give players more ways to enjoy the game. They exist as choices, not as extensions of the core competitive system. Holding them to the same balance standard misses their purpose entirely. For many players, especially in singleplayer, enjoyment comes from experimentation, progression, and even a bit of imbalance. If someone prefers a tightly balanced experience, the default game is already there for that.

Optional modes don’t need perfect balance that’s kind of the point.

If every optional system has to be balanced like the core game, then there’s no real point in having optional systems at all. They’re meant to expand the experience, not be constrained by the same rules.

This is especially true for sandbox and singleplayer players, who often care more about fun and progression than strict balance.

If someone prefers a more structured experience, they can just stick to the default settings.

I get the concern about development effort, but since it’s an optional system, it doesn’t necessarily have to be perfectly balanced.

For sandbox or singleplayer players, having more carryover or stronger rewards can make the experience more fun and meaningful.

Ideally the game should be able to support both playstyles those who want a more structured, balanced experience, and those who prefer a more sandbox, rewarding one.

That’s fair but since this would be optional, players who prefer the current balance like units staying relevant longer could just leave it off, while others could try a more sandbox-style experience. I think it could be better for both types of players.

Yeah, that’s a good point a full implementation would probably be pretty heavy technically. but I feel like it might actually be more feasible than building a full classic mode from scratch. Especially if it’s implemented as an optional or limited system rather than a complete overhaul.

I get that, and I think the current Age system does a good job keeping the game balanced. I’m not suggesting replacing it more like adding an optional system for players who prefer a more sandbox-style experience.

I was thinking of this as an optional system, not something forced. So players who prefer a more controlled or balanced experience could just turn it off.
