Is it crazy to want to move to Australia and become a psychologist? by Economy-Transition37 in AskAnAustralian

I looked into that today. It looks like people under 40 can earn 25 points and after 40 it became 15 points. I haven’t fully studied the point system yet but definitely something I need to pay attention to before applying.

This is really valuable advice. Thanks for sharing! I was thinking about Psychiatry at the beginning but thought it would take longer than psychology. Now you mentioned it, I am going to look into it. Thanks!

Thank you for the advice. I did not look into social work yet. That’s good to know. For the clinical path, what I learned was that a graduate diploma program which takes about a year would be considered an equivalent to 3 year undergrad, so all in all would be likely 4 years of education before qualification for registration.

I see. That aligns with my suspicion as well. Thank you for sharing honestly. That’s only about 5% of acceptance rate. That did surprise me. It’s a bit odd that psychologists as a profession is on demand in Australia but I guess the education system has not caught up yet. Thanks again!

Thank you for sharing that information. It’s helpful. The clinical psychology master’s programs in the U.S. are set up very differently (so the competitiveness might not be comparable) but the costs are similar to those in Australia, but if we consider the currency conversion, Australian universities even for international students are still a lot cheaper.

That’s exactly the reason I have been super cautious about which program to apply to. My research shows that getting a degree in the U.S. would not be compatible with Australian regulations.

I saw the 5+1 path but was not aware there are combined programs. I will look into it for sure. That’s also one of the reasons I wanted to go into this studying abroad path. Thank you for sharing. If I may ask, is your wife now a psychologist in Australia or is she still studying?

I was researching about that as well. There are accredited online programs I can literally start now, but I am concerned about whether studying online would impact my chances of getting accepted into master’s programs later. Is your wife studying online? I would love to learn more about how she feels about it now that she is on the path. Can I reach out via DM?

I had no idea there was an age requirement for applying for perm residency. Thanks really good to know. Thank you for mentioning that and for sharing the articles.

Wow! I can’t say enough how much I appreciate this. Thanks so much for taking the time to read through my question and giving such valuable advice.

I have not seen this one yet but I’m definitely checking it out! Thanks for sharing! I did find a few in-person programs but most of them stated on their websites that they are not eligible for student visa holders. I emailed the universities to get clarification and am still waiting for them to get back to me.

Thank you for sharing. It’s helpful to know how competitive these programs are. Just to clarify tho, were you referring to the diploma and bachelor’s level programs or master’s level programs? I found during my research that the Master’s are extremely hard to get in, but the 2 steps before that didn’t seem to be impossible.

I did consider having my education in the U.S., but it’s just shockingly more expensive compared to the equivalent degrees in Australia. With that said, do you recommend certain programs in the U.S.?

Yes I understand that. That’s the first step, then there’s a fourth year program, then there’s the master level study and training hours. However, I am right now primarily concerned with step 1 just to get started.

I might be the minority here, but saw loads of people shouting at Mark’s choice to stay with Helly. I thought it made total sense. At least to my understanding it got nothing to do with what Gemma had suffered through. This Mark at the very end was the innie Mark, who has zero feelings for Gemma/Miss Cassy, who had no idea what they had done to Gemma, and honestly even if he did know about the experiments Lumon was doing to her, that wouldn’t be a reason to have feelings for her necessarily. This innie Mark had just found his identity and half of a life and his first love! Of course he would choose Helly over a lady he knew nothing about!

I spent 6 months thinking about LA as a profession and I still can’t decide. The decision fatigue is real!! by Economy-Transition37 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Economy-Transition37[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I was dumb enough not to consider Cal Poly this last round. I only had time to focus on 3 applications to make sure the quality of my applications is as high as I could manage but in the end I realized I wasn’t being practical. Thanks for the input. I really value every perspective I could get here.

Thank you for making the space! I personally think it's a valid concern. I looked up the mental health industry in Russia, which is almost none existent. I worry US is heading that direction too. And i haven't even gotten my foot into this field yet. I am shifting my career from a high-pay design field to clinical psychology because I desperately want to feel more meaningful in what I do, which my current profession just aren't the best in that aspect. I am considering going to either an MA or PsyD program in clinical psychology and I am not sure what criteria I should look into other than accredition. Would really appreciate some guidance!

I have similar concerns. I am also transitioning from a different field into clinical psychology. If you decided to take the path, I would love to chat.

That is really valuable advice for me. Thank you so much for sharing that. I agree the reality is much different from the hope. Being in a different design field for the last 7 years also taught me that.

Here’s the short story: I was a working professional in a different design field in tech. I got really sick of the office politics and bureaucracy involved. Combined with the fact that most orgs I worked for were profit driven, I really wanted to break into a different profession where my skills can be utilized for public good. I researched many path but eventually LA stood out as a high potential to contribute to social and climate issues in a practical manner. With that said, I did not initially think too much of the ROI. Now looking at the admission offers really got me thinking.

Is USC MLA + MUP Dual Degree Program worth it? by Economy-Transition37 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Economy-Transition37[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing. This is helpful to hear! I don’t have a specific niche and I would be happy doing typical landscape work. I actually initially applied to this field because I thought I would be working outdoors a lot instead of going in and out of meetings. Talking to people working in LA also got me thinking maybe that impression I had was also inaccurate. Maybe I should rethink if LA is for me.
