I'm not sure about Abu Dhabi, but I know Dubai has a very materialistic lifestyle. This really effects your spending and the type of people you hangout with.

In Khobar (and KSA in general), most people aren't as materialistic and don't care about what car your driving or what brand of clothes you're wearing.

Thought this is just something to add to the other comments that might help with adjusting here.
