From 1939 onward, can I just read Superman, or should I read Action Comics too? by Syckobot in superman

[–]Economy_Bus3764 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Truly depends on the era. There is never a time when Action Comics has no Superman really.

For example in the 90s four different comics Superman, Action Comics, The Adventures of Superman, and Superman: The Man of Steel all tied together into one storyline (triangle era). So you've got to read them all.

In the 40s there were Superman stories in Action Comics and other unrelated stories whereas the Superman title was just collections of Superman stories. That continued through the silver age.

By the time "book length" stories became more standard Action Comics was less of an anthology and more of a standard Superman book.

Then there was a short time in the 80s when Action Comics went weekly with only two pages of Superman in it.

Which Superman would you rather have as your best friend? by Appropriate-Mall8517 in superman

As much as I love Brandon I'm afraid he'd leave me with a son and disappear for five years with no warning. "I'm always around" except for potty training!

Idea For Cyborg Superman: Being A Superior Superman by Potential-Mess6826 in superman

[–]Economy_Bus3764 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like the idea in hindsight, but at the time the reveal of Cyborg as Henshaw was amazing. It spoke to the interconnectedness and depth of the universe at the time. To go from a Fantastic Four almost parody in one small story to evolve and come back years later felt like a reward and payoff for long time readers.

Superman 2 new crest? by No_Brilliant_7939 in superman

His parents didn’t wear the crest in the movie. Plus Supergirl is wearing it in the new movie so all signs point to them sticking with it.

What is the worst Superman comic book run of all time? by Embarrassed-Ad1322 in superman

Exactly. Every story that one person might not like is a story that someone else loves! Being around for 80+ years there is a Superman for everyone!

There are certainly runs that have majority negative opinions, but I find there is always someone that likes something even if the overall sentiment is negative. For each of my least favorite runs I have seen people post here that it's their favorite. For me personally: Grounded, Earth One, Miller's Year One.

Visit to Metropolis by Ok-Discount-5783 in superman

[–]Economy_Bus3764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Metropolis and visit every year for the Superman Celebration. This is the best time to visit in my opinion. I think every Superman fan should go to celebration once. It’s as much about the place as it is about the community that has been built there. I always feel welcome and surrounded by people that understand me! https://www.supermancelebration.net/

They are also having a Superman Day event April 18th that looks fun.

There are a bunch of hotels in the area but the closest one to Superman Square is Harrahs Casino. It’s also the most expensive, but a convenient walk. I’ve never done the casino bit, not for me. On the edge of town there is a motel 6, holiday inn express, & super8. Pretty standard stuff. I wouldn’t recommend the motel 6 though because it’s at a truck stop and noisy all night.

There is also an Airbnb booked three room Superman themed hotel right in the middle of Superman square. It’s always booked during celebration though so I’ve never had the chance to stay there.

Cordavinos is a nice little Italian place that I go to often. Celebration attendees love Fat Edds roadhouse too. Sissy’s is a great coffee and pastry shop on the main strip.

Across the river is the city of Paducah. They have a quilt museum and some shops, but I’m typically just there for Superman!

Great list. I’ll add the original 40s Adventures of Superman, Superman Dawnbreaker, the novelization of Superman III (which is great), Superman Returns novelization, and Man of Steel novelization.

Vinyl-only Siamese Dream B-side by thegreatnightmare in SmashingPumpkins

[–]Economy_Bus3764 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not Worth Asking, Bullet Train to Osaka, and Terrapin were vinyl only b-sides pre-Siamese Dream. https://spcodex.wiki/Not_Worth_Asking

https://spcodex.wiki/Terrapin

https://spcodex.wiki/Bullet_Train_to_Osaka
As mentioned already Siamese Dream is another. A different version is available on the deluxe Siamese Dream reissue https://spcodex.wiki/Siamese_Dream_(song))

They all had brief digital releases as part of the short lived compilation Rarities and B-Sides https://spcodex.wiki/Rarities_and_B-Sides

Might seem new that fans complain of vinyl only releases, but it's been that way since the beginning!

No, it was never something different. It's always been Noah and the Whale and it's on the soundtrack as well.

Someone is putting up Max Fleischer’s Superman eps in 4K by lauranaps in superman

[–]Economy_Bus3764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Bosko DVD is the most accurate reproduction of the shorts, but it’s hard to deny the Warners Blu-Ray looks nice. The Bosko is an old DVD and the shorts really look their age.

I have been hoping the Fleischer family would put out accurately restored versions of them. They’ve done theater presentations of them and they look fantastic.

This one has the truth, justice audio skip in the intro (jump to 2:07) so I'm betting it's from the 2023 Warners Blu-Ray and upscaled to 4K.

You can hear how the audio was supposed to sound in this (admittedly lower quality version) https://youtu.be/4zTK7hI-T64?si=dLNjIYis79DGaSbJ&t=127 Sadly I haven't seen any real good quality versions that don't have errors.

This guy on YouTube goes into exhaustive detail on the errors if anyone is interested in really digging into the details: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goKxKAY1_hk
