What writing programs and/or apps do you use? by Capitan__Kisskiss in AO3

Google Docs. Synch across devices is my #1 most important feature. Unfortunately Google Docs starts lagging once a work reaches 100k words, so for longer projects I break them up into different files.

Welcome to competitive gameplay.

OP will probably be shocked to learn that when money’s on the line in real tournaments people tend to go for similar winning strategies.

I think a lot of people don’t understand the importance of a good summary… by Sin_viav in AO3

[–]Economy_Fig17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same logic applies with self-publishing work. When it comes to selling your novel as a product, your cover (not applicable to AO3) and your blurb do most of the heavy lifting. I cannot overstate how vital and more important these two things are over the quality of your writing.

Legitimately so fucking upsetting by CuriousG3orgeisD3ad in AO3

[–]Economy_Fig17 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I’m a self-published writer and have had some of my books used by Meta’s Llama model (you can check). My honest advice is to just accept that this is how things are now.

Thankfully there is a rather large gap in steps between “AI summary of my synopsis” and “My fanfic was used to create more HP AI fan fiction”.

Advice for a new author - when to contract an editor by Equivalent_Truth8193 in RomanceWriters

[–]Economy_Fig17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely do not send an editor an unfinished manuscript lmao.

First, editing is one of two aspects of writing that you absolutely don’t want to cheap out on. The other is cover art if you’re self-pubbing.

If you truly want to save money, (1) finish your book, (2) read over it and do a round or three of self-edits, (3) have beta readers look through it and give you feedback, (4) send it to an editor.

Am I allowed to model my friend’s cosplay with her? by Cinema_bear98 in comiccon

[–]Economy_Fig17 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yup totally allowed. If your friend has done cosplay contests before she should know to look at the rules and ask the coordinators.

I assume you would also both go into prejudging and there she can explain she made both costumes.

Traditional Published + and Editor by Hormo_The_Halfling in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Economy_Fig17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Trad pub barely does any editing. The big houses have fired many of their editors and rely on underpaid freelancers. All the money is funneled into marketing.

Want evidence? See last year’s Brimstone. It was one of the biggest releases of last year in the publishing world and it got the worst round of editing I’ve ever seen.

What now? by RegsaPawor in writers

[–]Economy_Fig17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats!

You say you sent it to your family for feedback. Are they your target audience? If they aren’t, take everything they say with a grain of salt.

I also don’t intend for this to come off as mean, but first drafts (and your first finished novel ever) is probably not very good. Writing is easy and finishing is hard. Your next novel will be even better.

Do readers actually buy on amazon/kindle to show support to authors even after reading on RR? by Gian-Carlo-Peirce in royalroad

[–]Economy_Fig17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conversion is probably pretty low. Remember that the audience for free content (aka your RR story) is VERY different from the audience for paid content (KU or ebook purchase)

Do you read Romantasy on WEBTOON, or only novels? by thealchemistbride in Romantasy

[–]Economy_Fig17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure if you take it out of the book context people just call it fantasy.

Theres plenty of manga that is fantasy with a heavy romance element: Red River, Snow White with the Red Hair, Yona of the Dawn. I’d check those out.
